Ive never had a Yamaha receiver so I'm struggling a little bit. I've had the 770 for about a week now. I have a 5.1 system with a zone 2 for my deck.

What sound mode do you all use when watching tv or Netflix?? Right now I have it set to Movie Standard. I just want a constant good setting to watch tv and Netflix. On my Onkyo and Denon receivers I was just able to select like the Dolby Digital. I don't see that "normal" setting for the Yamaha. Is it Surround Decoder??

Also, on DIRECTV the sound matches up perfectly, but when I watch Netflix via the app on my Sony 930d the audio is off. I see in the settings about the lip sync but it looks like it affects all inputs. I just want the Audio 1 source to be changed.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ChromeJob 06-28-2017 12:30 AM

As mentioned in the other thread, Straight will work great for stereo music, and multi-channel film, and Sur Decode will work for movies presented in 2.0. (Sometimes those movie are in mono but presented in 2.0, so you can use Dolby Surround to center teh film on your screen, with the center channel.)

Just noticed that there is a sale on the A770 this week at Frys. I had been thinking of getting the x2400h but I do not necessarily need all of those hdmi out.

I currently have an LG 65C7 connected to a Roku Ultra, LG UP970 and a Tivo Mini. At most I will add maybe one more device so the 3 HDCP 2.2 connections will be more than enough for me. This will be for my living where I do most of my normal listening. I have a 5.1 setup with 3 LCR bookshelves with 2 in-ceiling speakers.

I mainly want a new AVR to handle the newer video formats so I can take advantage of my current devices and new TV.

Never owned a Yamaha before. I have had a old Onkyo 805, Pioneer SC35 and a Denon AVR790 (currently being used in living room setup).

What is the sale price? I don't see it on their site, shows as $649.
I've had nothing but good experiences with Yamaha receivers. I've been thinking about the A770 and a sale price would probably tip me over the edge especially since it is so new.
I do find it annoying that not all of the HDMI is 2.2 though.

Hopefully I can mention the price here but is is on sale with their weekly promo code if you are signed up for their emails. It is going for $379 through Saturday.

SoCalCyclist 07-24-2017 01:34 PM

I see it on their weekly sale for $649...$379? It's an A770??
Oh wait I see one with a Sunday promo code that only says trusted name brand original $649. When I clock on more info it goes to the 770 page. That is an unbelievably good price. There are two in the store by me but it won't let you buy them with free pickup. Looks like I have to go into the store.

afrogt 07-24-2017 11:16 PM

well, you're not going to get a better price anywhere else. Reserve one and go pick it up! What is it a 20 minute drive to San Marcos?

I would if I could but San Diego and San Marcos are out of stock.
Found one in Fountain Valley and picking it up today ???

Cool. You'll like it. Nice price.

I got a A760 for $325 out the door about 6 weeks ago from Fry's to give to a friend. Tested it for 3 weeks at my place before giving to her. GUI menus are different than my Denon receivers but the Yamaha app is better than the Denon app.

My friend only has a 2.0 setup so she can listen to internet radio/Pandora/Spotify with the TV on. She loves it!

Yes it will be my fourth or fifth Yamaha receiver and my third Aventage receiver.

I'm a little confused by diagram which shows using the zone 2 outputs for presence speakers. How are the 7 channels distributed to 9 speakers? There's a comment in the manual that says, "The surround back speakers and presence speakers do not produce sounds simultaneously. The unit automatically changes the speakers to be used based on the input signal." Does this work well? Or is better to just use a 7-speaker setup?

It means for convenience you can connect 9 speakers but only 7 will operate at any one time. So when Zone 2 is activated, the Surround Back speakers are disabled. When the Surround Back speakers are used, the Zone 2 speakers are disabled.

So if I don't need Zone 2, I could hook up a 5.2.4 speaker setup. However, the front presence speakers and the surround back speakers will never be active at the same time (so not truly 9 channels of output). How well does that work? Is it better than 5.2.2?

The three models listed in this thread are only 7CH models so the best they can do is either 7.2 or 5.2.2. You would have to upgrade to the A2070 in order to do a 5.2.4 setup. Using 4 overhead/presence speakers is considerably better than using only 2 (similar to comparing a 3.1 setup to a 5.1 setup).

Yamaha RX-A770 - help a newbie

I've finally upgraded beyond just a soundbar and am completely new to using a receiver. Other than confirming I have everything plugged in properly & that everything works, I'm pretty clueless as to whether or not I'm selecting the right settings. My screen isn't 4K/UHD and my speakers are only 3.0 for now, but I'd like to know if something should be adjusted to maximize A/V quality. YPAO was done after everything was set in place, but beyond that I've just set Sur. Decode to Auto and left it at that.

The receiver is connected to the ARC port on my TV (Samsung PN50C8000), my L/R/C speakers, Apple TV, PS4, PS3, a Nintendo Switch, and soon my turntable.

Is Sur. Decode Auto sufficient for tv / movies / gaming, or should I select something else? For turntable & streaming music, should I prefer Stereo 2.0? When & why should I want to select "straight?" With the turntable, should I prefer "Pure Direct?" With streaming music (either Apple TV or AirPlay), should I want enhancer on?

The only specific issue I've encountered with this is some video games don't play anything through the center channel unless I set it to "Music 7ch Stereo." Thought that was odd?

Sorry for the pile of questions, I read the Yamaha Quick Start Guide but it didn't really make me understand these specific concerns as much as it made me aware of the things I'd already discovered while toggling through all menus on day 1.

It's not odd at all because your games are probably in stereo which doesn't use the center channel. Your receiver is decoding whatever signal is being sent to it when set to Auto.

I'm not a gamer at all so I can't tell you how your PS4, PS3 and Nintendo Switch should be configured.

Dolby Vision Pass through

I know they advertise Dolby Vision compatible on these receives but is it already installed or is it a future firmware update?

ben12345 08-01-2017 03:24 PM

RX-A670 vis RX-V583

Did any of you research the difference between the RX-A670 and the RX-V583? The specs look identical to me and the V583 is about $50. chapter. I did see where it was indicated the A670 may have upgraded components and a longer warranty. Not sure is this is correct.

Start digging into the owner's manual (OM). ;)

After over 15 years of Denon receivers, I just got a RX-A770 and paired it with a new LG OLEDC7P. Overall been very happy but after about a week and a half something has gone wrong and struggling to figure it out.

Set-up is DTV HR44 (non-4K) to HDMI 1, FireTV to HDMI 2 and ARC set up on the HDMI out to the TV (to run native LG apps back through receiver). All HDMI cables are 2.2 and brand new. Immediately upon set up the receiver recognized HDMI 1 as "Directv Genie" and HDMI 2 as "Amazon Fire TV"; the TV similarly recognized the both devices on it's input menu. It all worked seamlessly.

As of last night however the HDMI 1 (DTV) input changed to "STB Refsw Desi" and the TV no longer sees the DTV box as an input. Sound/Video works as long as I manually set the input back to HDMI 1 on the Yamaha, but both the Yamaha and LG ignore the DTV otherwise. Before this message I could toggle from LG apps to DTV using the TV remote and all the requisite inputs would change. More a quality-of-life problem than anything.

I've switched inputs, power-cycled all devices and played with settings to no avail. I realize the DTV box is a bit dated and I actually wasn't expecting it to handshake correctly at all - but it did, for the first week and a half at least!

Any suggestions?

Try powering off all devices and unplugging their respective power and HDMI cables for about 10 minutes. Then plug all back in and power on the TV first, pause 5 seconds, AVR, pause 5 seconds, source device.

Thanks - I did some haphazard power-cycling and cable switching last night but will do it more orderly tonight as you advised. If it fixes the problem then I just hope it's not a recurring event!

Any luck with this problem?
My Yamaha RX-A770 from day 1 saw cable input as "STB Refsw Desi" but it works fine without any manual intervention.
However, HDMI2 connection is touchy. Anything I plug in there flickers unless I grab it tight with my hands. Does it mean that HDMI2 input is bad and I should get it exchanged before my 30 days are over?

I tried a few things and ended up going trying out a Denon AVRX2400H while still under the 45 day return policy to see how it worked. The same basic problem persists with the Denon. I've played with the CEC settings across devices and it's clear it's the DirecTV box that just doesn't play well with others. I've since added a PS4 Pro and that behaves just fine. I'm waiting out the next generation of streaming boxes so I can stop relying on the LG WebOS apps and can safely turn off ARC/CEC and go back to my Harmony Remote to get things back under control :)

I think I'm going to stick with the Denon but I don't think the Yamaha was really the culprit and they make fantastic receivers as well. I think the Denon is just more comfortable for me since I've used them for a very long time.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the info. Looks like it maybe fixed in an upcoming firmware update. Even it they don't, its not a a huge issue for me. It is a minor annoyance.

The bigger annoyance is this issue: on my RX-A770 the HDMI input 2 connection is touchy. Anything I plug in there flickers unless I grab it tight with my hands. Does it mean that HDMI2 input is bad and I should get it exchanged before my 30 days are over?

afrogt 08-07-2017 02:52 PM

Exchange it since you're within that time frame. Kind of a no brainer.
