Thanks for asking. The BenQ LK990. Should be shipped tomorrow. My screen is a 160 inch diagonal. I'm looking forward to improved multichannel music and, of course, 4K UHD movies.

FYI, Auro3D has a few adjustable parameters (Audio > Surround Parameter) that impact the upmix....

First there's the "room size" setting which I think controls the flavor of processing (and perhaps the amount of delay/reverb) in the expanded signal. I prefer the "Small" setting myself, from what I can tell with 2ch upmix the "Medium" and "Movie" and "Speech" settings are more center channel focused (so 2ch music will have more sound collapsed to the center channel) whereas "Small" and "Large" settings tend to spread the sound more evenly across the LCR. If you put on 2ch music and switch between the modes you can hear how some are more "center focused" than others.

Also there's an "Auro-Matic 3D Strength" control which defaults to 10 but can be adjusted from 1-16, which I believe controls the level of the "fake reflections" that Auromatic is creating in the other speakers If it sounds too reverby and synthetic you can use this setting to tame it down so it's more of a gentle expansion of the plain stereo signal.

Room Size parameter determines the length of the decay tails (large rooms have longer decay times than small rooms). You can use a click track on YouTube to hear the difference. Amount of reverb added is controlled by the Strength parameter.

Ah yes that's it.

Room Size also seems to impact the "center spread" as well. From what I can tell the Small/Large settings act more like DSU with "Center Spread" whereas the Medium size behaves like the "Movie" setting with more collapsing to the center channel.

From the little I've played with Auro-Matic, I don't remember the centre speaker getting much content. Like the second to widest Center Spread setting on PLII.

BTW, Auro-Matic2D has no adjustable parameters, so its Strength and Room Size are the default settings of Auro-Matic3D.

Out of curiosity have you checked the new "Movie" mode? Originally there was just the small/medium/large room size options.... in theory an upmix mode focused on video/movie content specifically should have more going to the center channel.

It was something new D+M (not sure of other brands) added this current model year. There used be just the Small/Medium/Large and the "Speech" setting, but now there's a "Movie" setting. They also added in an option for "Channel Expansion" which I'm assuming would (for example) take a native Auro3D track recording in 9.1 or 10.1 and expand it to 13.1 output if you have that many speakers enabled.

The description for Movie mode makes it sound like another room simulation setting. Since Auro-Matic doesn't do matrix extraction, I wonder if the centre output is simply L+R. In which case, how does that change when switched to Movie mode?

Didn't you try this in the past, only to discover that "expansion" from 5 to 7 in the base layer simply mean copying the 2 surround channels to the Sides and Rears?

Subjectively, it sounds more "center focused". If I listen to 2ch music and toggle between "Small" and "Movie" mode it feels analogous to using Dolby Surround and switching the "Center Spread" parameter on/off. So given the lack of matrix extraction, I'm assuming it's just a level difference in the LCR channels' respective balance.

Yes, I'm assuming it's simply copying the signals. However, previously there wasn't an option to enable/disable it, and also this appears to be intended for *native* Auro3D content -- when I was testing before it was Auromatic.

These version numbers make no sense.

Current version is...

Maybe it is the update we were waiting for that allows custom crossovers for imax enhanced instead of the set 70Hz. Crossovers.

In terms of version numbers making sense the last six digits of the firmware version are the same for the Marantz AV8805 and Denon AVR-X4500H for today's firmware updates. The previous three versions of firmware for the these two units also match in the last six digits. In contrast the DTS versions for these two units are not an exact match with the AV8805 at 3.90.50.54 and the X4500H at 3.90.50.51.

Received my AV8805 today. Everything is working and completed a firmware update. It is driving an SVS 5.2 home theater speaker system. Tomorrow morning while everyone is asleep, I will complete an Audyssey calibration. At the moment, I am music only as my new projector has not shipped and my old projector died several weeks ago. Right now, I am using an old 1080p monitor hooked up so I can read the 8805. Multichannel surround from my HTPC working. Streaming from my Nvidia Shield working. CAB/SAT from my Dish receiver working.

Looking forward to critical music listening after Audyssey correction. I may replace my amplifier. Old one (Outlaw 755) still working.

Hi all,

I'm happy to report that I just ordered the AV8805 today off my dealer. I'm super pumped and have no regrets about making the jump from the AV7705 for sure. I should be getting it next week and reading the posts here, reviews, and youtube videos all helped me to make my decision that buying this flagship processor was the way to go and I should be good to go for years to come and its upgradeable to HDMI 2.1 when the time comes as well. So thanks again and now I will be posting my questions here come next Saturday..haha..thanks again all. :-)

Quick question. I read a review where it said that the AV8805 dropped the AM/FM tuner on this model. Is there any truth to this statement? Thanks again all.

I think some European models have dropped the AM/FM tuner. This is probably one of them. The American version, at least, seems to still have the tuner.

In comparison to the 8802A, the reviewer may have been referring to the “HD Radio” feature which has been dropped.

Hi all,

Thanks for your comments. I was looking for the review to see where it was written but no such luck. I do agree with zimmo, DOC1943 and drh3b that it most likely a site in either in Europe or the UK where it this was mentioned cause as I stated earlier the video review was from the Audioholics site and it did reveal during the unboxing there was am/fm antennas in the box. Thanks for your comments and I am really looking forward to receiving my AV8805 a week from tomorrow.

So thanks again and now I will be posting my questions here come next Saturday..haha..thanks again all. :-)

Quick question. I read a review where it said that the AV8805 dropped the AM/FM tuner on this model. Is there any truth to this statement? Thanks again all.

The images listed in post 1 are of the European AV8805, one of which clearly shows no AM/FM antenna posts rather only a TUNER RCA input.
