Check the center speaker connections, is the center speaker silent?

Curious if anyone might have insights on why the spoken audio/dialog content would all of a sudden go missing? Every movie we watch for ANY content source (AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, BluRay) in any surround sound mode (DTS, Dolby, etc) plays with music/sounds/etc - but NO spoken dialog. Interestingly, I CAN hear the spoken dialog (from all channels) only when I set the receiver to "mono" mode. Troubleshooting so far:
+ changed HDMI cables: no change; no spoken dialog - just ambient sounds
+ tried content sources (AppleTV, Amazon FireTV, BluRay): no change; no spoken dialog - just ambient sounds
+ tried updating receiver firmware to latest: no change
+ reset/restarted all streaming devices: no change

Hoping for a little help. Anyone else run into an issue like this? Thank you.

Outside of checking center channel connections (make sure the wires are not touching), or the speaker isn't dead, you may want to look at running the AccuEQ Room Calibration setup for levels, and it will show you if the center speaker is missing, and adjust the levels of the center channel to a higher level if they got set low somehow. Hi there,

I am thinking of upgrading my trusty ole 818. It's been a few years since I've been in the receiver market after replacing my 805, which was a great receiver.

I run a 7.2 system, so looking for a recommendation/suggestion for a receiver with as much or slightly more punch than my 818. I've been eyeing the 920, for the 4k and it seems a little more punch. Does anyone have any thoughts on this and/or any other recommendations?

Thank you,

Mike

@mtheeb I too was looking at the rz920 when it went on sale at AC4L but I missed it. Good news, I am not sure I care anymore since learning that the new rz740/840 have an all new hdmi board and circuit. They also have accueq advanced, the ability to go to 7.2.4, have good power, good phono stage, full preouts and have all of the newest 4k features baked in. No need to get older gear for the same price.

unless you want to wait for the 8k hdmi 2.1 receivers in 2020, both of new rz lines have excellent reviews so far. Just to throw a wrench in things and make it a little harder for you to decide....https://www.onkyousa.com/product/tx-rz840-2/

Just to really mess you up, if you have a full theater, can get your hands on 7-11 channels of amplification and want to take your sh*t to the next level.....https://www.onkyousa.com/product/pr-rz5100-2/

Keep us posted!

Thanks so much for the response! Here's a couple more questions:

So I am running all Polk, including a pair of RTiA7's (not bi-amped) through the 818. If I went to the 840, I would go from 135 watts per channel to 120. I've heard some people add a seperate amp, like the Monoprice Monoliths to power their mains. Would this be something you would recommend? If so, which amp would you recommend to drive those bi-ampable mains?

@mtheeb the bi-amping really doesn't do much for people like us, only the hardcore audiophile 2 channel listeners said they can hear the difference.

But it always receommended (budget and wife approved) to add a good 2 channel amp for the LR, even for HT.

The monolith are excellent bang for the buck right now, If you like class d amps then d-sonic has some excellent choices otherwise Emotiva and Crown are household names with good amps as well.

@eriksells916

Again, thanks for the quick response.

Gotcha, so then if I went with a 2 channel amp to run my RTiA7's what would be a good model to shop? Monoprice has their 2x200 watt for 999.99, is this the style of amp you would recommend (powerwise) or is that overkill/underkill?

Thanks again for answering all my questions.

@mtheeb let me start over. First, the 818 was a beast but going from 135 wpc to the rz840 (120 wpc) should be negligible. Second, the rtia7 are 89db efficient so depending on how large your room is, how loud you listen and for how long, you might not even need an amp. The rz840 can handle all of it under modest conditions since it can put out about 70wpc with all 7 driven. You will need a simple 2 channel amp if you want to expand to 7.1.4 (below)

budget 2 channel amps

https://www.amazon.com/OSD-Audio-XMP...10&sr=8-2&th=1

https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Source-...2388263&sr=8-1

If you like to crank it for long periods of time in a large room, then absolutely get an external amp for the LCR. To save money maybe look online for used quality amps from names like Acurus, Parasound, ATI, monolith, Bryston, Celeste.
