Hi fi newbie needs help

Just got a pair of Magnepan 1.7i’s today. What is a good pre/amp matchup for these speakers? I have a 14x14 listening room and a budget of just $4000. Should I go mono or stereo amps? Thank you for your consideration and reply.

What became of the Emotiva XSP-1 that you posted about 4 days ago?

Maybe drop a D-sonic on them if you aren't scared of Class D:

If you are stuck on Class A/B, this is an ATI OEM, high current 200 Watt Amp:

https://www.monoprice.com/product?c_...seq=1&format=2

Or you could look into ATI's high end sig line:

And the matching pre-amp? The OP no longer has one.

Its tough to say without knowing more about his set up. If he is just looking for a 2-channel stereo preamp (which it sounds like he is) I don't have much insight to offer. If he is looking for a multi-channel preamp with some HT use in mind, I might chime in with a few thoughts.

I'm not 100% certain, but I think you've made a mistake.

The Magnepan 1.7i is a nominally 4 ohm speaker. I believe that the Vidar amp isn't recommended for loads less than 8 ohms in bridged (mono) mode. If you read its reviews, you'll find that its thermal protection will kick in if the amp is played at high volume with a 4 ohm speaker.

If yo use a single Vidar in stereo mode with the Magnepans, it ought to work fine. You'd get a mere 200W/channel, though.

I emailed the Schiit company before ordering and they said it would be fine to run two Vidar amps in mono with the 1.7i’s.

I hope that's correct.

Did you specifically check that they are aware that the Magnepans are 4 ohm speakers?

Stating in my email to Schiit that I would be running the Freya preamp with 2 Vidar amps running balanced connectors to my Magnepan 1.7i’s and asking would this setup be ok the response I got was, “Yes, you can run Vidar with XLR connectors in monoblock at 4ohms,”....That response was from Tom E.

Seems like an odd response. The XLR cables would be used to connect the Freya to the Vidar. "monoblock" means something different to me than a stereo amp used in bridged (monaural) mode. There would be no "balanced connectors to my Magnepan 1.7i’s" - just plain old speaker wires, connected to the ordinary binding posts on the Vidars.

At least one of us is confused about terminology.

If the Vidars don't like working in bridged mode to drive 4 ohm speakers, apparently nothing terrible will happen - just the thermal protection will kick in. If you don't play the Magnepans loudly, you may never see it.

Sorry, minus 2 from myself for grammatical errors.
Corrections.”....I would be running the Freya preamp with two Vidar amps, running balanced connectors, to my Magnepan 1.7i’s...”

So your saying that setup is just not enough to run those speakers and not have any worries?

If you doubt me, download and read the Vidar manual. Schiit explicitly mentions the possible issue with 4 ohm speakers when the amp is used in mono (bridged) mode.

The 4 ohm thing is a minor worry. If you used a single Vidar as a stereo amp, it'd be happy with a 4 ohm speaker, but in bridged mode, the effective impedance of a 4 ohm speaker would be 2 ohms. As a stereo amp, you get a mere 200W/channel, though.

The Magnepans aren't spec'd as very sensitive (86dB at 2.83V, which works out to 83 dB/W considering the 4 ohms). 200W would be sufficient to drive them to over 92 dB at 4.5m (15'). (That's a naïve calculation, for an anechoic chamber.) I'd think that would be loud. (85 dB isn't safe for extended listening, and that would be reached at 40W.)
