Then you obviously have to choose "6ch Height Speakers" for the height layout.

Now, the tricky part -- you CANNOT add "Front Height" designated speakers to a "Top Front + Top Rear" layout. You would have to do a "Front Height + Top Middle + Rear Height" layout or "Top Front + Top Middle + Top Rear"... when you're trying to do 6 Atmos overheads the middle pair HAS TO be designated "Top Middle".
Ah, ok, cool! Wasn't sure if designating the top rear as rear height would mess anything up. This helps immensely. Thank you!

6, Yes. 6+2, No, as Auro uses the same Front Height setting used by Atmos/DTS:X.

And that's unfortunate for those who want to keep their overheads out of the 65-115 elevation range, and still want to benefit from maximum overhead ATMOS resolution, with for example a A FH+TF+TR combination. I can't really find a reason why D&M would not allow for such combination, as it's not a Dolby imposed limitation.

A good idea and understanding lies at the base of every successful project.

To add a little more color to what JD said, you CAN do a full 8 height speaker setup with 6 for Atmos and 6 for Auro.

The layout would be FH + TM + RH for Atmos, and then for Auro the Top Middle are silent and replaced by the CH and TS (Voice of God) speaker.

What JD was specifically saying was you can't do a separate pair of Front Height specifically for Auro3D, because Atmos will use those speakers. But you can do a "6+2" height setup, just not the way you were envisioning.

To add even a little more color to what has been said, I'm planning to install in my Living Room (HT not dedicated, but with a high level of WAF) both Atmos and Auro-3D with the most accurate possible speaker positions, according to Atmos/Auro specifications.

Atmos 7.1.4 with top Ceiling speakers, TF and TR at 45º over my head MLP.
Auro-3D 13.1 with additional 4 height speakers FH (over Fronts) and SH (over surrounds).
Also the additional Center High CH and the TS, for Auro-3D, in the middle of the 4 Atmos Top. Like a dice "five".

Then, for changing configurations via USB save/restore, I will setup some speaker selector switches, as needed.
Also I will try with dialog lift, with some other switch to select copying C to CH, when in Atmos.

The THING here, according to previous comments, is that having all that amount of speakers I would like to have additional Atmos resolution with the exact speakers positions of Front Height, Top Front and Top Rear. I will not install Rear Height, but Surround Height, as per Auro-3D recommendation.

So, the only alternative settings are (FH,TM,TR) or (FH,TM,RH) or (TF,TM,TR). But it seems it would not be possible to set the exact speakers positions that I will have: (FH, TF, TR).

Would that speaker "misplacements" would affect to the correct 3D rendering for Atmos objects flying over my head?

I really think it is just a matter of freaky playing about alternatives (as we like to do). A really advantage, if right configuration could be done, perhaps could not clearly be heard by other people. Even not by me?

But we have fun...

Want to have full Auro3D effect as well as the analog inputr for my Oppo 205 (just got it today from last batches).
Thanks for the tip!!!

Has anyone received information regarding a trade in value you've submitted ? That is, going close to a week since contacting Denon without an email.

Is it normal or should have taken no time at all for an email ? I'm aware there dealing with potentially thousands of users requesting a value.
Anyone with same situation and feedback result be nice. I will try calling again the given number tomorrow (24th) and see what's up.

Just looking to see what they can offer (if I ever get an answer) and balance it with the next step for a purchase.

Thanks again all for those that respond.

I was not pleased with their offer. $1200 on a one year old x6300h seems like I would be giving it away.

I know what you mean since I was given a value below $425 through 2ndlife when looking for trading up to X8500H.
The jest of my question is how long did it take for Denon (assuming thats who) to get back to you after you’ve called?
I just want to know so that i may take the next step buying locally than through Denon.
That article is somewhat rosy but lost in the details.

My experience - contacted
Denon on phone 9/14, received two emails 9/14 and I submitted receipt to dropbox on 9/14. I received their offer on 9/19. I think that there is a lot of wisdom in Cleveland Plasma's post although I have not researched street prices.

Thanks for the feedback!
That means in my book the person took my information over the phone and let it sat.
Nothing from them at this time. Close to a week since I called as stated earlier.
Not desperate by any means but seeing how they are taking care of the customers or not.

Hardly giving it away. The X6300H is actually 2 years old and is selling below that from authorized dealers (if even still available).

Wow, your expectations are way out of line if you think $1200 on the X6300H is "giving it away".

You couldn't get close to that selling it on the used market. Refurbs with a one year warranty from A4L cost $1,100 (linky linky) and they sell for that range on eBay.

It's a two year old product now, that is extremely fair market value and more than I expected frankly.

Re-running Audyssey didn't affect this, but changing the subwoofer phase to 0-degrees flattened it out again.

I cannot think of anything that would account for this. I hadn't moved the subwoofer or any of my speakers. I hadn't changed the subwoofer's own internal settings at all. Is it even possible for the AVR to affect phase like that?
Update on this topic: I had cause to re-run Audyssey this weekend. After doing so, now REW tells me that 90-degree phase is once again the flattest response.

I'm going to bite the bullet and accept Denon's offer for the 6200W trade-in for the 8500H... My only concern is the HDMI 2.1 upgrade process, will the unit qualify being that it's part of a trade-in?

Shouldn't matter. Denon will be happy to take your $200 - $300 just like with everyone else.

Well at least I received the email from Denon to submit my invoice for the X6400H purchase in order to get the X8500H.
However don’t want the cart before the horse here. Will see what is offered.
Reason I did not get the email right away because person took down wrong email address even after repeating it several times.

By the way, question on speaker placement in room (assuming I get the X8500H (hope so)).
I have existing speakers in the positions of front/center/4 in ceiling (Atmos), surround front/surround back and 2 subs.
Basically a traditional 7.2.4 setup.

Im trying as others found here to play movies in Atmos (encoded) and switch to Auro3D for other non-Atmos discs.
Where can I best place the other speakers for best effect?
That is, do I put 3 speakers above the center speaker (as seen in diagrams) and/or add one speaker in addition to the back?
I know you can ONLY run 13 speakers at same time even though 15 speakers can be hooked up (as read).

I’ll look for a diagram I made showing placement of current speakers and post it.
Any information greatly appreciated. I will continue reading the forums especially this one for tips.

In the Dolby Atmos thread, Nalleh posted: "You can’t have 6 Atmos overheads with wides, even on the 8500. As soon as you activate the wides, you are limited to 4 overheads in Atmos."

Is this correct? I thought that 5.1.6(+W) was an allowable option. Is that not the case?

Nothing from them at this time. Close to a week since I called as stated earlier.
Not desperate by any means but seeing how they are taking care of the customers or not.
Might be better selling it out right then.........

Ya, $1200 is not bad seeing how you just send it in and no other worries, you would be lucky to get that or more trying to sell it out right when you consider the street price of the new AVR-X6500H.

7.1.4(+W) is possible, though, correct?

IMO, the 8500 platform has been the most stable of the flagship models in recent years, when owning an AV amp is more akin to running a PC..
I have had the 4311, 4520, 7200 etc and also their Marantz cousins, and this one has been smooth... I look forward to the HDMI 2.1 board and also the eARC upgrades in due time..
