Denon X1300W - Sound modes while using headphones

Hi there,

I would like to ask a question. I have a stereo headphone which I sometimes use on my Denon X1300W.
While watching a Blu-Ray with surround content like DTS-HD MA 5.1 the sound mode by default is "Stereo".
I also can choose the sound mode "DTS-HD MA". I would swear I can hear a difference but I would like to know what the receiver is doing when it comes to downmixing.

So, what's the difference between the sound mode "Stereo" or "DTS-HD MA" when using headphones?

Thanks in advance!
