Any chance the 3400 is upgraded via firmware after it was discontinued?

If not, is it worth the upgrade just for that feature?
As noted in post 6 (Firmware Change log) of the 2017 Denon AVR Owner's thread, the 2017 models (ie. X3400H) received the Airplay 2 firmware update in August 2018.

Now here’s my question, if I want to use the internal apps on my A9F, how do I get to play sound that is coming from the receiver instead of the tv speakers? Do I have to plug another hdmi cord from my tv to one of the outputs of the receiver? I’m a little confused 😐
You would either use HDMI(ARC) or an optical cable.
Ok, I’m still having an issue trying to get sound out on my home theater system using my tv internal app. I’m using my A9F as the center speaker and the rest in-ceiling speakers. I have the settings setup to ARC and the TV input eARC. Please help!

Try powering off the AVR and TV and unplugging their respective power cables and the HDMI cable (ensure not a directional Redmere cable) reconnecting them after 10 minutes.

If the TV has HDMI-CEC selected and TV audio set to "external speakers/home theater" and if ARC is enabled on the X4500H, then when one of the TV's smart apps is playing, when you select "TV Audio" on the remote control, the TV's audio should pass to the speakers connected to the X4500H. Note that as the "TV Audio Switching" setting defaults to ON, you should not have to press the "TV Audio" source on the remote control. If still no joy, you can try replacing the HDMI cable (should be using a 4k "Premium" certified High Speed) connecting the AVR to the TV otherwise, you will have to resort to using an optical cable from the TV --> OPT1(TV Audio) on the X4500H with the understanding that this configuration will not pass DD+(Atmos) which requires an HDMI cable.

+1, I have the same experience. Seems like an easy fix to display active speakers but I can't seem to find any rhyme or reason...at least it still produces sound.

Changing Speakers from small to large?

Ive placed the calibration mic in different locations and the closer location the speaker results change from large to small. they would normally be categorized as large.

Do I have to recalibrate (a PIA) if I change the speakers from small to large in the Audyssey menu?
What does it do when the speaker size is changed?
thanks!

Curious about this as well. I don't see this on my 4500 but maybe it's a 6X00 feature? In any case, since he is talking about a 6400 shouldn't it be in the 2017 thread (although I would still like to see the picture of the display with the temp reading)?

On my AVR-X4500H there is a volume indicator in dB that could look like temp in the upper right corner of the units display. there is no temperature display on the front panel display or the TV menu display. See page 23 of the 4500 manual.

Nope. In fact, the standard recommendation is when the Front L/R speakers are set to LARGE after running Audyssey, if there is a dedicated sub in the setup, reset the Front L/R to SMALL/80Hz in Manual Setup - Test Tones.

Please move your response to the 2017 Denon AVR Owner's thread as that is where the X6400h is discussed.

Nope, I’m still running into the same issue. It’s not the HDMI Cable, because eARC enabled it works perfectly with my Apple 4K show Atmos and other devices. It’s just the tv internal apps that doesn’t work. The receiver switches to TV Audio automatically.

If I understood you correctly, all the devices play through the receiver without problem, except for the TV Audio that is coming into the receiver on the ARC channel. Forgive me if I'm rehashing what you already did, but I think the basics are:

1. HDMI cable goes from the receiver output supporting ARC to the TV input supporting ARC. If it's connected to the wrong one on either end, it won't work. (For example, there are multiple HDMI video out ports on the receiver but only one is equipped with ARC.)
2. HDMI cable has to support the ARC / eARC feature you are attempting to use (which you seem to have already confirmed). AFAIK, eARC is supported by few if any devices yet and what it does is let the ARC channel transmit hi-res audio instead of only DD5.1 type audio which is the current ARC standard.
3. Receiver needs to be set to correct input. This sounds like it is happening in your case due to setting up CEC etc.
4. TV has to be set to send audio out of the ARC-enabled HDMI port. Did you check this part?
5. It seems extremely unlikely to be the culprit, but you might check to see if the TV is sending PCM audio rather than Bitstream if this is an option. Receiver should be able to do both but something weird might be going on.
6. Is your receiver firmware updated? I just got my X3500H set up and it wasn't playing internet radio properly (it was set to this but no sound would come out). After a firmware update I installed today, it is working okay.

As is often stated, just because an HDMI cable works when connected from the source directly to the TV does not necessarily mean it will work when the source is passing through the AVR first.

Review each of the items that Andy_H has listed.

Hey guys I got my 6500h yesterday and am having some issues.

Wanted to know if normal or if I should send back/in for warranty.

Okay so setup last night, didn't do the update or nothing yet. Just setup ran audyssey hooked up to PJ/TV and Shield and watched GOT (I had been waiting lol)

At the end of GOT, I wanted to try "Jack Ryan" on prime. Well that was the first issue, I switched to prime, and the receiver was frozen, after GOT ended. It switched back to stereo in the menu. Then I went to Jack Ryan and it didn't change. The volume wouldn't move, nothing.

So I went down the AVR itself, same deal, and pressing the power button it, yielded no result. I unplugged it from the wall and all was fine again.

I updated the firmware today, which hopefully fixed that issue from happening again.

Anyway today, I got my USB with all music setup, and it fits under the door YAY!

That would be a Yay if it worked more than half the time. The USB will sometimes work on power up, sometimes not. When it does work, I can play a track, and sometimes it will even play another after words. However half the time it says there is no USB.... even mid song sometimes it will throw up an error saying USB not detected.

I have done some light reading I could, that states all Denon AVRs USB is bad. Which for a 2200 dollar receiver is pretty ridiculous. Anyway, is this common? Or should I send it back?

Edit: I think its just flaky, seems to work again by waiting or keep going into usb. Sigh.

Has this changed?

Sound United (parent company of Denon and Marantz) has started to release information on the new 2019 Denon models starting with the three of the four new "S" series models. The lower "X" series will be announced next with the X4500H/X6500H continuing thru 2019 and not being replaced until 2020. The X4500H/X6500H will continue to be discussed in the 2018 Denon AVR Owner's thread.

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-re...sts-1-8-a.html

There is no high end models this year? Or do you mean the 2600/3600 and I'm being a snob.

It's usually those stubby micro USB sticks that are flaky. I use a Lexar Jumpdrive and my Denon plays music tracks just fine. Try a different drive.

I originally posted this in 2017 Denon thread, but since the unit I recently bought is 2018 AVR-X3500, I am posting it here to get your advice and suggestions.

Is Denon firmware full of bugs? Is it more trouble than worth? I know that Denon X3500 is available now with a deep deep discount, but is it still not worth it based on the troubles in see here and other threads?

I am asking as I have purchased one but am still within the return period.

Thanks for your input and suggestion.

AVR-S740H or AVR-S640H?

Hi! Newcomer here. I'm researching a replacement for my Pioneer receiver (VSX-819H), which is getting old in the tooth now.
I was attracted to the AVR-S640H that I spotted in BestBuy because if the phono input for my turntable and the price was OK at $550CAD. Then I noticed that the AVR-S740H is $150 cheaper, so price-wise that looks more attractive. My current setup is 5.1 with Klipsch speakers and a Samsung 1080p LED TV, in a small family room 11ft x 18ft.

So, I have a couple of questions:
The 740H seems like the best option price-wise but are there any gotchas using a 7.2 receiver in a 5.1 configuration?
How well suited would either be to my space?
Any thoughts on either of them as a stereo amp for my turntable? I'm currently using a cheap-ish phono pre-amp with the Pioneer and the sound is pretty flat on the stereo settings.

Any comments/advice would be welcome.

Fat32 (was like that stock) 64gbs, Alot lol, uh 29gbs worth. (like half Flac, and Half MP3)

It doesnt seem to be an issue of size, as like I said, it does work at first, it takes a second to fully load and show tracks, but then it works. Sometimes it will play 1 song, sometimes it will play 5-6 if i dont try to change songs, and other times its just flat out not detected. Sometimes switching inputs fixes it to be detected, sometimes it requires a hard reset.

The drive works just fine in the pc and my shield. It is only the denon thats having an issue. I have to use stubby, the front usb is under a door and I have a 2 year old, cant have the door open, or open in front of him ever, defiantly cant have a drive that sticks out.

That said I did try another USB today when I was having issues its 16gb, also fat 32, and only had 3 albums flac on it, same deal. Would play a song or 2, and then disappear. That is a normal usb PNY.

I am all for a drive suggestion, thats slim enough to fit with the door closed, however a large drive simply isnt an option.

Understand. Sandisc Cruzer. USB sticks are tempermental though and some work better than others with certain devices. Having said that it very well could be the receivers input since you moved some music to another drive and it did the same thing. I eventually moved my Lexar to my OPPO player but that was for the interface change not performance. I would still try more sticks if you have them handy just to be sure. I have drawers full of different makes and sizes. Be nice if they had an input in the back as well.

Chane A5 towers,Chane A2.4 center,RBH bipole side surrounds, Rythmik LV12R x2,Denon X4300H, Outlaw 5000,Front B speakers: Wharfedale Diamond 10.1 books. https://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-rec...d-part-ii.html

I have another stick around here somewhere, just have to track it down, and will give that a shot.

If worse comes to worse, I will just use my Shield to Play music for now, and when my NAS is finished give that a shot. Just preferred the least amount of devices on for music listening.

Also it's not a Cruzer, it's an Ultra Fit 🙂. I think I can get the Samsung to fit, maybe, if I remove the plastic in the door I can for sure. The Lexmark would probably fit, but it has much worse reliability reviews then the SanDisk.

AVR-S740H - Audyssey settings and network connection lost

I accidentally hit the HEOS MUSIC source button and the receiver went into "Please wait...assigning" mode. I don't have any HEOS devices, so I waited a minute or two to see if it would figure that out and time out on its own, then backed out to the original source when it didn't.

The first thing I noticed was the volume was really low. Turns out my Audyssey audio settings for that source were completely reset -- everything had been turned off. So I changed these back manually.

Next, I noticed that my network connection wasn't active (I use wi-fi), and all Network settings except Information and Diagnostics were greyed out. I tried Diagnostics and it cycled for 15-20 minutes before I finally gave up and backed out.

Did a power off/on reset. No luck. Unplugged it for a few minutes. No luck. Went back into the menu to select Reset > Network Settings, but the Network Settings reset option is greyed out. Did a manual ZONE 2 ON/OFF + ZONE 2 SOURCE button reset as described in the manual. No luck with that, either.

Is there anything else I can try before attempting a complete reset, or did this get bricked somehow? It seems to be otherwise ok except for the reset Audyssey settings and greyed out options.

UPDATE: Now, this is interesting. I had a few other menu items greyed out, too, such as Setup Assistant and Save and Load. I went into my router to check connected devices, and saw the Denon in the list with its IP. Went to the IP with my browser and could see the Denon network info. Clicked around a bit and saw that everything looked fine -- went back to the AVR and all previously greyed-out menu items were now available. Shrug.

I haven't tried the Phono input on my AVR-S740H (should still sound better than the Pioneer you got right now) but in the end I would definitely go for the S740H over the S640H for future-proofing reasons (like one day if you decide to go up to either 7.1 surround or 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X), I think you'll like it. I certainly do.

America elevates you to another level.

I have the 640 and it does everything I need/want it to do. I have no interest in anything other than 5.1 sound. It has ample power. Both models have about the same power. The phono specs should meet your needs. Of course there is no end to what you can spend on electronics trying to maximize vinyl. If the prices on those receivers is not a typo, you might as well go for the 740. Power-wise, I think they are the same. The receiver will play 5.1 great, and there is no gotcha.

Best Buy in the US has a 15 day return policy. If it's the same in Canada, try it out to see if it meets your needs.
