Then I noticed that the AVR-S740H is $150 cheaper, so price-wise that looks more attractive. My current setup is 5.1 with Klipsch speakers and a Samsung 1080p LED TV, in a small family room 11ft x 18ft.

So, I have a couple of questions:
The 740H seems like the best option price-wise but are there any gotchas using a 7.2 receiver in a 5.1 configuration?
How well suited would either be to my space?
Any thoughts on either of them as a stereo amp for my turntable? I'm currently using a cheap-ish phono pre-amp with the Pioneer and the sound is pretty flat on the stereo settings.

Any comments/advice would be welcome.
I have the 640 and it does everything I need/want it to do. I have no interest in anything other than 5.1 sound. It has ample power. Both models have about the same power. The phono specs should meet your needs. Of course there is no end to what you can spend on electronics trying to maximize vinyl. If the prices on those receivers is not a typo, you might as well go for the 740. Power-wise, I think they are the same. The receiver will play 5.1 great, and there is no gotcha.

Best Buy in the US has a 15 day return policy. If it's the same in Canada, try it out to see if it meets your needs.

jd, you mentioned in the 2019 Owner’s thread that the (presumably) X6600H update would be skipped this year until 2020. What was the reason for running the X6500H for another year?

Zone 3 audio

I have an X6500H and I am trying to run the audio from my cable box to Zone 3. Unfortunately, when I set zone 3 to cable/sat I get no audio. Other audio sources (e.g., Sirius, airplay, etc...) work fine on zone 3. Any thoughts on this?

I am asking as I have purchased one but am still within the return period.

Thanks for your input and suggestion.
Answers you got in the previous thread are the same. No major issues.

Unlike Zone 2, Zone 3 cannot pass HDMI audio unless you select "ALL ZONE STEREO" in which case the main zone gets downmixed to stereo as well.

No major update until HDMI 2.1 in 2020.

There is no high end models this year? Or do you mean the 2600/3600 and I'm being a snob.
Nope. No change. X4500H and X6500H to continue through 2019. The mid level X3600H will be highest model released in 2019.

Nice I got a killer deal on a x6500 and this makes me feel even better about it!

So does the possibility of Firmware updates. IMO that is what D/M should always do, sure update the low end models every year, but the high ends, should be like a 2yr+ Cycle make it matter, make us feel like we will get some updates on a 2k+ Purchase. upgrading a sub 1k device annually is one thing, but 2k+ is a little harder to justify. Especially with those highends, they lose so much when they have to clearance them, it would instill value to consumers, and give them more time to move old model and make the changes more worth it.

Is the x6500 and 4500 not already HDMI 2.1? I know the PC world, there is some whispers about some monitors and such actually being 2.1, however they cant call it that, Until HDMI is ready to announce and allow that, but functionally they are 2.1 and just need a firmware update and to be allowed to officially state "2.1"

Also it's not a Cruzer, it's an Ultra Fit 🙂. I think I can get the Samsung to fit, maybe, if I remove the plastic in the door I can for sure. The Lexmark would probably fit, but it has much worse reliability reviews then the SanDisk.
Sorry, I was recommending the Cruzer not saying you had one but to be honest testing 2 or more different USB sticks and getting the same results doesn't bode well for it being the source that's the problem.

Correct, they are not HDMI 2.1. In fact, there are no HDMI 2.1 AVRs that have been released as full functionality requires a new HDMI board which is still in testing by the various AVR mfr's. Some features of HDMI 2.1 are already available on HDMI 2.0 models (eg. eARC is available on the X3500H/X4500H/X6500H and will be available on all 2019 Denon models).

Later this year I plan to buy a new Denon AVR, as an upgrade. I plan to install it in a well ventilated wiring closet, out of sight, and use the Denon iOS app to control it remotely (via WiFi).

However the Denon app gets poor reviews in the iOS App Store. The most common complaint is that when launched the app sometimes (randomly) can't connect to / can't find the AVR on the local network. This is obviously a concern to me given I plan to put the AVR in a wiring closet.

Has anyone here experienced this problem? Does it happen often? Thanks for any insights offered.

I bought an x4500h recently and tried to use the Andriod app religiously. I tried and failed miserably and after a month of trying, just deleted the app. 90% of the time, the app doesnt connect to the reciever on your first try. It does so after trying 3 or 4 times and by then I was just using the remote. Once it connects, it does everything you need but still may lose connection when your phone screen shuts off as it needs to reconnect everytime.

I dont know if the CEC would be a better way to control your devices. I tried that too but had unwanted effects on the tv and reciever so stopped using that too. There's a reason it gets such a poor rating and I believe it to be the weakest feature in the Denon setup.

The app is worthless like the other guy said. You could do your idea with a Logitech harmony though.

This is disappointing to hear. But I appreciate the honest feedback.

I stream almost everything these days, music and video, using smart outboard devices like Apple TV and Sonos. Which means the AVR doesn't do much more than serve as a multi-channel amp (although it gets credit for supporting Audyssey).

So if Denon can't get software control right, in 2019, I almost think "why bother", just go buy a multi-channel amp. Perhaps what we're really seeing here is the decline of the AVR as a product category.

It sort of reminds me of the Welsh guy who ran Sony a while back, and how he said he realized he had a big problem when the top Sony technical guy tried to tell him software didn't matter. Perhaps Denon is like that, stuck in the past?

I've never quite been able to figure out why, but it just does not seem to like some networks. I have taken a "broken" unit to anoher network with the same phone and had it work just fine. My own home network has never had any problem with any denon unit, but i have done work in some homes, where nothing we do can get it to work. ISP all in one routher/modem combos seem to be the most common cause. Dual band networks with the same SSID also cause it to break (but only most of the time, not always).

In general, for most people they will connect it and it will work and they will never have any problems with it. For the rest, good #@$&ing luck.

One useful thing support did show me, if the unit has web control, try accessing that from the phone. If it doesn't work, its not even worth trying.

Backlit Remote for 4500?

I like the Denon remote but I need a backlit remote. Is there a version you use for the Denon that is backlit and perhaps universal for 3 additional devices?

I can't speak to the iOS app, but I use the Android app all day long on a couple of tablets with no major issues. In fact, the only time I use a (universal) remote to control the AVR is when I am sitting in front of the TV. Yes, every once in a while I might have to relaunch the app, but that could be due to any number of factors in the networking equation.

IMHO if you have a strong, reliable LAN, the D+M app should serve you well enough.

Thanks. Between your input and the person who said they had no issues with an Ethernet connection, I'll give it a go and hope for the best.

Now I just have to wait for the 2019 models to hit the street ...

I also have no issues. I used to have nothing but problems but since they updated the app it’s fine. One odd thing I’ve noted though is that, for my ears, using audyssey via their other app (multiEq) sounds far worse than using it direct in the AVR.

This just happened to me on my X4300H. Upgraded AT&T to fiber at the node and a new router with WiFi extender using dual band with the same SSID and now the Denon and HEOS app wont find the receiver even though all my other wireless devices still work fine including Amazon Alexa app. Least now I know what happened and why.
