Fair enough - but any idea when this is the case, based on previous years?

Although there were some changes in the layout of the front panel on the "S" series models especially, there was no addition or subtraction of inputs/buttons.

I am most likely going to replace my X4200 this go round. Not 100% sure. IF I do it will be very hard to pick between the 2018 Denon's and Yamaha's. Seeing some stuff here and there about the xx80's that you know are coming....

Pioneer used to be in the mix but for me no longer.

Need to see how the DV pass through firmware works out on the X4200 first.

Still a few months away from the DV firmware release, although by then, the specs on the new X4500H should be released.

"specs on the new X4500H should be released."

If DV pass through works and already having an external amp they'd have to be really impressive to justify the upgrade.

For some people, having access to the receiver's Web page again might be worth the upgrade. It went away when HEOS was first added, but apparently is being restored in the 2018 models.

For the X4200? I have access via the web.

For the Heos models. None of the xxxH devices allow access to the Web page (assuming it's actually there).

I have a 3311ci now and trying to decide whether to upgrade to a refurb 4400H or wait for the new 3500H which are about the same price. I don't have the space for built-in Atmos speakers now but may in the future. From what I have read, up-firing speakers don't cut it.

Depends on the height of and type of ceiling. CEDIA demos have proven that in some cases Dolby enabled speakers provide a very convincing height effect.

Also, review post 1 of this thread to determine if you want any of the newer features to be released on the X3500H.

Thank you for all of that great info. The only one feature that I care about is the ability to do menus over 4K.

Have there been any improvements with Denon or other brands to allow the option of hearing a different source than the video? I often watch sports and like to listed to music at the same time. I am aware of the workarounds to do this with my current Denon but would prefer a seamless method using the HDMI for video and another HDMI or the phono input for the audio.

I implemented this by programming the following code into my remote:

I have a Harmony Smart Hub and remote. I don't think I have that much flexibility or my 3311ci does not support it.

The <Video Select> feature has been available for years that allows watching an HDMI video source and listening to a non-HDMI audio source (to include PHONO on those models with PHONO inputs or CD analog input for turntables with their own pre-amp or when using a 3rd party phono pre-amp). As all of the 2018 models (except the S540BT) now feature a PHONO input, the <Video Select> feature can be used with all models to listen to a turntable. To listen to an HDMI audio source, you would have to purchase an HDMI --> analog converter and purchase a S940H/X2500H or higher model.

The x2500H manual shows the additional video select source as being available for the PHONO input but does not show this as pre-defined input source on the input assign table, will this work once a chosen input has been renamed as 'PHONO'?

An input cannot be reassigned as PHONO.

Correct. Until the release of these 2018 models, the PHONO input has only been featured on the X4000 series and higher models for the past 5 years.

Appreciate the fast reply!

Any idea on time frame for the x3500H release? About to pull the trigger on 3400 for my lounge but stumbled on the 2500 manual last night while hunting for the 3500 one, would quite like a read of it ASAP haha...

Its great to see the PHONO inputs moving down the model chain. Now if those companies who indicated they were going to produce decent TT’s at a reasonable price point would actually do so......

If I need a cheap Dolby Atmos / DTS:X receiver to go with a new 4K TV, it looks like the options are below. This is for a family room, and I am currently running a Denon AVR3312CI, so I don’t need to spend a lot of money.

I see the 2018 options are:

- S740H - MSRP $479, 7.2 CH, 75W, HDMI In/Out (6.1) - avail April

Upgrading from the S640H adds a front HDMI input and two more audio channels for a 7CH model, Atmos/DTS:X 5.2.2, DTS:X. It features 5.1 + Zone 2 capability using the Surround Back speaker posts for Zone 2. There are no Zone 2 pre-outs. No noticeable difference in power. DTS Virtual:X (simulates height audio when using a 5.1 configuration but Audyssey is disabled).

- S940H - MSRP $579, 7.2CH, 90W, HDMI In/Out (8/2, main/main outputs) - avail April

Upgrading from the S740H adds 2 more HDMI inputs, 1 more main zone monitor output (eg. when using a TV and PJ), 2 component video inputs / 1 output, 4k/30Hz upscaling, on board. No noticeable difference in either power or audio quality.

Versus this 2017 option:

AVRS730H Sorry, the other thread didn’t have the specs where I could locate them easily, but I know it doesn’t display menus over 4K.

Cant edit the post for some reason, but...

Wanted to add I was thinking to stick with 7-channel. The 4 surround speakers are ceiling-mounted, and the L/C/R are on top of the wall unit, so practically on the ceiling.

Huh? Post 1 of the 2017 Owner's thread provides the same info on those models as this thread provides on the 2018 models.
