My main question is regarding the direction of HDMI hookups for proper AV passthrough.

My primary AV source will be an Nvidia Shield to output digital AV to my TV.

Can I connect the Nvidia Shield output HDMI directly to the Denon first to deliver the audio, with the receiver then passing through the video through an HDMI out?

Or, do I need to connect the Nvidia Shield AV output HDMI first to the TV, with the TV then sending the audio passthrough back to the receiver through another HDMI or optical out?

Or would both scenarios work equivalently?

Turns out I’m just dumb. I had the second tv plugged into “zone 2” not “monitor 2”... which explains why I had to turn on zone 2 for it to work. Wow.
Now I’ve got proper sound in the theater, and the other TV is showing a mirrored screen.
In my defense, I wasn’t looking at the back of the AVR when I hooked up the second TV... yeah that’s it.

Thanks, jd. So does this mean that the Dynamic Volume setting does the exact same thing as the Dynamic Compression setting? Or should my question be, what is the difference between Dynamic Volume and Dynamic Compression? It appears that the surround mode might have something to do with it.

Dynamic Compression is a legacy feature mostly applicable to DD audio (but also DTS) which can be set to OFF if using Dynamic Volume.

Denon x4500h Atmos + Zone2 issue

I have just upgraded from Pioneer Elite SC-61 to the Denon x4500h. I have a zone 2 stereo pair on the deck, and just had 4 x atmos speakers installed in the ceiling. I have Definitive Technology center, fronts with built in subs, bipolar surrounds, and the new 4 ceiling speakers. No rear surrounds planned.

Where I apparently went wrong is that it seems that with this receiver I just bought, I cannot use the Zone2 function since I have atmos speakers. When I bought the receiver a couple of weeks ago, before the atmos speakers were installed, I configured the zone2 to be connected to the rear surround output. But now that the atmos speakers are installed, I apparently can't use the rear surround for that function. I'm really disappointed, and it seems that I now have to buy a two channel amp and use pre-out. Can someone confirm this?

Also, we pretty much never care to have the same thing playing in both places, and just want the outdoor speakers to be used for listening to music by the pool. That being said, maybe I'm better off buying a completely separate 2 channel device (amp, receiver??) that has airplay capability and can be selected, instead of having to choose the receiver, then choose the zone, and all that nonsense. In fact, maybe I prefer that since there were a couple of times where we were blasting music outside without realizing it, since the zone was turned on. Any recommendations on that topic?

I have the AVR-X4500H with its standard remote control, and I have added led light strips to the back of my TV which give it a nice glow in the dark, and it allows me to see all the remote controls' keys quite well (AVR, Roku, Tivo, TV, etc).

So, if this is of interest for you, you can order them from Amazon and experiment with them.

I assume you meant to direct your comment to the OP to whom I was responding. I myself have the X8500H w/backlit remote. But then I almost never use the OEM remote since I have a Harmony Elite (also backlit) that operates all of the gear in my setup.

1. Confirmed. There are only 9 amps on board so if you use all 9 in the main zone for your 5.2.4 setup, you must use an external amp for Zone 2 and/or Zone 3.
2. Zone 2 can be powered on independently from the main zone using either the remote control or using the 2016 Denon AVR Remote app( ie. main zone can be off, except when using Airplay).

Review posts 1-8 on page 1 of this thread for additional helpful information.

Make the move, you won't be sorry. I hate having more than one remote. The 650/665 will do anything you ask of it. As long as you ask with the proper commands. Ignore the $189 price on Amazon that first pops up for a 650. They are becoming hard to come by. A 665 is the same, only black. Pick up a 665 for about $75 new (Amazon), or $40-60 used/refurbished on ebay. Check out the end of the Denon 2019 thread were I just helped a guy program (with screenshots) an unlimited number of QuickSelects from his Original remote to the Harmony. Good luck

Still no sound with my Denon AVR-X4500h and my LG 65" c7 OLED. I have tried everything I know of and still can't get any sound out of the receiver from the TV. My X4500H has been perfect. Granted, it's only 3.5 months old, so this isn't much of an endorsement. Like all Denons, it runs warms, so I have an AC Infinity T8 to limit the temperature to not more than ~90F outside the unit.

Not an X4500H owner, but have owned it's predecessor, the X4400H since new (2018). Running 11.4 setup with Zone 2 and Zone 3 utilized at varying times. I just feel the need to emphasize the use of a cooling fan with theses units. Have used an Aircom fan system from day one. Never has gotten above 85F, still good as new.

I am curious how well this works for any QS settings that are not a part of the AVR's currently downloaded config file when the command is sent from the Harmony remote.

I should think that the AVR would execute only the settings recognized internally according to saved QS1 through QS4 regardless of any alterations that were subsequently made.

Could you clarify with specific examples of how this is working for you with the supplemental QS's on the Harmony regarding the functionality of the pertinent settings as shown below?

Hey gang, have a few questions before I spend money. We're looking to add a TV to our back patio.

Currently own the AVR-X3500H, which is supporting our living room as well as our back patio for a separate Sonos zone by way of Zone 2 pre-outs to a Sonos AMP and Polk subwoofer amp. This setup has served us well, but we'd really like to add a TV to our back patio.

I've read and re-read the Denon manual, but what I'm trying to understand is if I can simply run HDMI from Zone 2 OUT on the Denon to the new TV and still be able to operate the Sonos zone via Zone 2 source selection on the remote. I realize I would likely NOT be able to listen to music on the patio AND have the TV on the patio running with audio at the same time, but can I operate one activity at a time using the remote or is it one or the other period due to wiring or AVR limitations?

In case it matters, I'm using a Comcast cable box for cable TV in the living room and am unfortunately unable to leverage Live TV cable streaming due to the fact we do not have cable for our home internet service--otherwise this question would be moot.

Our hope is that we can select Zone 2 source with the remote to either listen to music or watch live cable tv on the back patio.

Couple more quick questions:

Is there any way to utilize the existing patio speakers for the TV audio?
The manual is a little confusing. If I'm watching TV with audio in Zone 2, is TV in main zone interrupted if the source is the same (Comcast cable box)?

Thank you in advance for any help or guidance here.

I typed it wrong earlier. I do have the cable connected Monitor 1 HDMI connection and it is labeled arc but still no sound. Thanks for the correction.

OK, moving on to the next items on the list:

Have you pressed TV Audio on the remote?
On the Denon you just need the ARC setting turned on.

Sorry, just reread that you have the C7. I believe that it only supports ARC. So just ARC in the Sound Out menu and make sure Simplink is turned on somewhere.
