So, height and surround speakers were installed this weekend; I'm now set up for 5.1.4 on my TX-NR787.
The only Atmos source I have currently is an XBox 1X, and, frankly, it sounds like crap for games and streaming content that support Atmos. The Atmos software is installed, and the HDMI audio out is set to bitstream/Atmos. The 3D effect is there, but the audio quality isn't particularly great ("warbly" is the only adjective that fits) and there are occasional crackles/pops. I've tested with both the "Insects" spatial demo and Netflix and the audio artifacts are identical. I don't have any games that are Atmos-enabled, but I'd expect the "Insects" demo to be a reasonable exercise of Atmos in gaming.
Atmos from a Blu-Ray disk played through the XB1X (tested with Blade Runner 2049 4K) is absolutely awesome. No warbles, no clicks, no pops. I do seem to have a small A/V Sync issue that I haven't been able to fix via the pop-up menu. Apparently you can't adjust the delay during playback (you can adjust while paused), but I just can't seem to tweak it out. To be clear, the video actually lags behind the audio; setting a cup down on a table you'll hear the thump before you see the cup make contact, and you hear dialogue a tiny fraction of a second before lips start moving.
Anyone else using this receiver with an XBox 1X? How's your luck with Atmos (and A/V Sync)?
