I am not sure about the music optimizer as I am not at home and haven't looked at it.

If you are talking upscaling audio, it for sure does that. You hit one of the buttons like "movie" and it will cycle through all the different options. I have mine set to Dolby Surround Upmixing.

This is not about upscaling audio. This is processing ausio to different listening modes. If you will notice on the remote and on the receiver there is a button calling music optimizer that optimize the mp3s audio. Unfortunately on this amplifier doesn’t works in all the listening modes, except on stereo and all stereo. Doesn’t works in Dolby surround, orchestra! Unplugged, etc, and I don’t know why. My previous 656 was working in all listening modes.

Question $699 Newegg + $200 gift card

Been in the market for new receiver after upgrading to 4K recently. Currently have an Onkyo TX-SR606. Also need a new sub-woofer. Taking the $200 gift card into account to use toward a sub-woofer I would buy anyway - this unit is now at a price that is unbelievably tempting: $499! For 9.2 channels?? That price is not much more than I paid for the 606 7 years ago. What's odd about Newegg for this unit is that it's nonrefundable, replacement only. But an open box unit is refundable.
Does anyone really think this unit will go below $499 anytime soon?

I am not a receiver expert, but I had a bit of time this weekend to listen to the 787. For me, it replaces a Denon 2200. The first thing I noticed was much strong bass. It was a world of difference compared to Audyssey on the Denon in listening to Kong: Skull Island. I used the first encounter with Kong to test things out at -20dB, which is plenty loud in my great room.

As a novice, I didn't hear anything negative using AccuEQ compared to Audyssey. The only immediate worry was if night mode would compress more than, say, "light", on Audyssey.

I got the 787 so I could do 5.1.4 vs 5.1.2. There was some solid panning during that scene and I could pick that up. I also played the Atmos demos on Vudu and they sounded great too.

There are somethings about menus that are annoying compared to the Denon. Namely, I can't change speaker levels without running the test tones. This is super annoying if the kids are asleep. I ended up adding 1dB to my rear heights and 2dB to the center on my own...although that was for personal taste.

So far so good!

If you are looking for a deal, Accessories4Less has started selling them for $550.

I did notice the back in ceiling speakers, which was the whole point. I thought the bass was better than with the Denon. I also noticed the receiver needed to be turned up higher than the Denon.

Honestly, I loved Dynamic Volume on the Denon and wasn't always crazy about Dynamic EQ boosting the surrounds too much. I thought there was good balance last night.

I should clarify that I have a great room, not dedicated space, and a very budget minded room.
Does the built in Google Chrome cast work on zone 2 or 3?

Just installed and setup my 787. I think it sounds better than the Yammy!

I want to see what the AccuEQ has for it's final numbers. Can't get to that menu "speakers" is grayed out? Can't understand why?

Help?

I got mine setup last night and calibrated. For the cost of this 9.2 AVR it sounds pretty good in my room. I'm using all 9 channels in a 7.2.2 configuration. The AccuEQ Advance feature really does work very well with the standing waves in my 20 X 20 HT room. I'm impressed with that feature when enabled. I'm going to be evaluating for some time but so far I like what I hear. I have a Denon 2809 with Audyssey MultEQ XT I'm comparing it to.

I just got mine calibrated. One thing that is odd is my old Onkyo had my speakers in the negative area but the new receiver have most of the speakers set to +10! My old listening volume was around 32 and now I feel that I need to have it cranked up to 50 for the same volume level. It could be because of the 2 additional Atmos speakers. Anyway, wanted to see if anyone is running into the same issue. I have all Klipsch speakers so they are fairly efficient so I wasn't expecting the results after the calibration.

Update: Figured it out. I was using the microphone from the older Onkyo. Used the new one and everything came into play. Ran the adjustments 5 times so far. The subwoofer voltage on this amp must be way higher then my older Onkyo. Old unit the gain on subwoofer was set to almost maximum. Now the gain is about halfway to get the same results. Looking forward to see how Infinity War is going to sound. Waited all year for it to come out on 4K. Hope it is good.

Update 2: Well got it done for now. Will probably calibrate it one more time once the family is out of the house and it is totally silent. I took the suggestion I read on the Atmos forum and pushed my Atmos speakers up 3 db in the level menu. Not over the top but definitely easier to hear them now. Was watching Coco and pre-level change didn't really hear the fireworks overhead. After, I can definitely make out the overhead sound. Again it's not over bearing but nice that it stands out a little more. I might dial it down a little bit but I'll see how it goes. Only thing that still gets me is that on the old Onkyo nr646 I can set it between 30-40 for normal listening. Now it seems to be around 50-60 for the same volume. What is reference on the Onkyo scale? I thought I heard 70 or 80 but wasn't sure.

82 is reference. According to the manual, if you can stand it that loud, it should say "82.0Ref" on the display. I'm using the relative scale.

Some features I like about this AVR is that you can use tone controls in tandem with an equalizer for up to five bands for the subwoofer(s) and nine bands for the other speakers.

That's alot of versatility in adjusting the sound to your liking. This can be done when using room and standing wave correction as well. The more I listen and adjust these customizable sound features it keeps sounding better in my room.

I'm using very efficient Klipsch speakers. Front sound stage is RP-280FA's and RP-450C center. It has plenty of power to push these speakers to a loud level in my room which is 20'x20'x 7' about 2600 cu ft. Loud levels to me is about -20db to -15db. I'm only using about two thirds of the room for a listening area as the other third is a built-in bar with plenty of beer on draft and other spirits.

I don't like the THX modes for music. They sound fine for movies so far but I'm still evaluating those modes.

EDIT: btw, has anyone done a firmware update on their unit yet? I tried to update via usb but it won't let me select the tab to update via usb. I wonder if it has to do with me not connecting this unit up to the internet yet?

xxxx-xxxx-0010 is the latest. That's one of the first things I do after start up.. Went from 9 to 10 without incident via internet.

Watched "MM-Fury Road" last night in 5.2.4 Atmos, Great effects! Difficulty understanding all the British accents, though..... Kicked up center channel +8 helped...

Hi all, is the thx certification on this avr important? It says thx is good for rooms upto 2000 cubic feet. My room is bigger than that. Will this avr benefit me more than my current (still within its return period) denon avr-x3400h?

Family Room: Onkyo TX-NR 646 AVR, Polk Audio RtiA3 fronts, Polk Audio CSiA4 center, BIC America F12 sub, Polk Audio RC-65i rears

Did anybody notice that you can’t disable the upscaler to this receiver? In the onkyo 636 it was an option through the menu of the receiver. This is a deal breaker for me if I want to make the upscale my 4K pj instead of the onkyo. I also noticed the music optimizer in this receiver for mp3 works only for the all stereo in listening mode and not the other( unplugged, orchestra.....). To my old 636 was working in most listening modes. The thx listening mode also is only 5.1.2 and not 5.1.4, for 5.1 movies so I am using dts neutral cause is using all the channels.

It is because there is no upscaler to disable in the first place. This AVR outputs video untouched which is what most of us wanted in the first place. So, you configure your source media device to the resolution you want and the TV/projector will do the upscale, the AVR has nothing to do with it. I tested with my Xbox One connecting to a FHD TV. So, I got the choice of setting Xbox One to 720p or 1080p. And my TV information shows it received 720p or 1080p matching my settings.

Mine just updated from 1030-4000-0030-0010 to 1040-5000-1040-0010

Did some google searching using the firmware version. Found a site that needed translating that says it's just for the Amazon Music feature. (also looks like it enables eARC in some receivers.)

I actually thought AM was already a feature but I did try it out. Works as expected. But to be honest, I'll probably stick with using DTS PlayFi for AM. Gives me ability to select AM but I can broadcast to all my PlayFi speakers that way.

Link I found:

They're quite similar in connectivity and configuration. The RZ630 has 10 fewer watts/ch, though.

I went with the NR787 both for the higher output (my media room is ~2,700 cubic feet) and the significantly lower effective price. Newegg had it at $649 with a $200 promotional gift card, bringing it in at $350 lower than the best price I could find on the RZ630 at the time.

I currently have it set up with a 3.1 speaker configuration but will be moving to a 5.2.4 setup as soon as I can get the wire run. I noticed a significant improvement in clarity over my previous receiver; it replaced an Onkyo TX-SR606 that served me well until I moved to a 4K display. The AccuEQ Advance did a much better job of adjusting to my room acoustics than the Audyssey calibration provided by the older amp (probably not a fair comparison given the advancements in technology that 8 years can bring to the table).

Everything just worked when I hooked it up. ARC, CEC, support for all 2K and 4K modes my equipment is capable of (XBox1X, TiVo Bolt+, Vizio P75-C1, RetroPie, PS3). Really looking forward to getting me some ATMOS, though ...

So, height and surround speakers were installed this weekend; I'm now set up for 5.1.4 on my TX-NR787.

The only Atmos source I have currently is an XBox 1X, and, frankly, it sounds like crap for games and streaming content that support Atmos. The Atmos software is installed, and the HDMI audio out is set to bitstream/Atmos. The 3D effect is there, but the audio quality isn't particularly great ("warbly" is the only adjective that fits) and there are occasional crackles/pops. I've tested with both the "Insects" spatial demo and Netflix and the audio artifacts are identical. I don't have any games that are Atmos-enabled, but I'd expect the "Insects" demo to be a reasonable exercise of Atmos in gaming.

Atmos from a Blu-Ray disk played through the XB1X (tested with Blade Runner 2049 4K) is absolutely awesome. No warbles, no clicks, no pops. I do seem to have a small A/V Sync issue that I haven't been able to fix via the pop-up menu. Apparently you can't adjust the delay during playback (you can adjust while paused), but I just can't seem to tweak it out. To be clear, the video actually lags behind the audio; setting a cup down on a table you'll hear the thump before you see the cup make contact, and you hear dialogue a tiny fraction of a second before lips start moving.

Anyone else using this receiver with an XBox 1X? How's your luck with Atmos (and A/V Sync)?

I'm using it with Xbox One S. And set up as 7.1.2. Atmos demo inside Dolby Atmos app works great for me. Atmos processing on regular game sound effects need sometime to get used to. But that has nothing to do with this receiver. I noticed tone Chang long before I bought this receiver while using headphones. No pops though.

I use Game mode for my TV when connected to XBox because I use it primary for gaming. So any additional delay from TV processing pictures is not acceptable. So, no A/V sync issue noticed.

Hmm. Maybe I'll try GLL on my Vizio. I must be trading something for the low latency, though ... HDR maybe?

I don't think HDR is the trade off. But I only tested HDR w/ Game Mode on a Samsung 4K TV. Game mode turns off almost all of the picture processing. So the picture quality may not be as good and motion processing is turned off. It is like Direct mode for audio.

That's why it is very difficult to use a single delay for A/V sync. Depending on the scenes, your TV may take more or less time to process each frame. Did you try the automatic HDMI A/V sync feature? It is, IIRC, supported on HDMI 1.3 or up devices.

Also, some UHD discs will display a warning screen at the beginning if you play on a 1080p TV, something about you need a 4K TV with HDR to get the best out of the disc. But that's a disc specific feature that displays on all UHD players. The playback of the movie is not affected. Gladiator is one such disc. Many other discs don't do this.
I don't believe UHD is 0-255 full range. The limited range is a requirement of film industry. They will never get rid of it.

Ahh, OK. I don't think I have any of that stuff turned on anyway, but I also know I don't have GLL explicitly enabled. I'll see if that makes a difference on the BR video lagging behind the audio. And yes, I do have the automatic A/V Sync feature enabled. I'm now thinking that's why I couldn't adjust the sync manually with any perceptible result, even though it seemed to let me (but only while the movie was paused).

Also, I noticed last night that having Atmos enabled does cause audio quality issues with non-Atmos games, too. I was getting a cyclic pulsing of the effects/music audio in NMS until I disabled Atmos in the XB1X's audio settings. I haven't tried any non-Atmos streaming content yet; that's on my list of things to do.

The picture processing are always on by default for all the consumer TVs. The Game mode, which is only popular in recent years, is there to disable them.
