Thanks for the link eriksells916! Wow that guy knows what he doing! On the other hand - My use is stricktly film watching and tv-show's music ala the voice etc. I have a great older Denon in my studio where I make music and listen to music.

My LX303 have a lot of space for cooling in my set-up. But I tested out with 18gbps (Monster 1,5meter)cables yesterday with Appletv4K and the LX303 set to HDMI enhanced mode and still no Atmos-sound... The preview filmsound is there but when I start the film its all silence. I press info on the remote and it show pcm 2 channel stereo something. (fixed pcm is set to off in the meny)
So the 3 Belkin's(48gbps) I order was a waist of money...

Hokies83 what is THD? (On the 304)

There is an issue with DV, Atmos and the Apple 4k. You will have to google or ducduckgo it. I don't think there is a solution to the problem at this time, iirc.

JIHAH! I have Dolby Atmos from Appletv4K on my Pioneer VSX-LX303! Latest update from apple iOS 12.3 did fix it!

Also tested it before downloading IOS12,3 with new Belkin's 48gbps and no atmos. So the new update from Apple fixes the handshake issue on the LX303 series and I think the LX503's will be up and running with Atmos too.

When I use the sony to play most, but not all, video files (.mp4, .vob, .m2ts) through the LX503, I get normal audio and no picture (OLED say no source detected). I have a few examples of each file type that play no problem. If I plug the player directly into the TV, I get picture and sound (via ARC) everytime. When a problematic video file starts, the LX503 clicks and the speaker indicators flash on and off a few times before starting only the audio. It's also possible that the LX503 is putting out a picture that the LG doesn't like.

Any suggested settings to help with this? At one point the LX503 said ARC from the OLED was unavailable, but using Netflix on the OLED somehow forced ARC to work. I suspect there is some communication issue between the LX503 and the OLED.
You can adjust the handshake settings for all HDMI inputs via the front panel. Each have Modes 1 through 3 but Mode 2 is not recommended. From the front panel, Press and hold 'Dimmer' then press 'Return'. An onscreen menu for the modes on each input will appear. Use the front panel up/down arrows controls to select the desired input lines then the left/right arrows to choose a mode. Press 'Return' to exit this screen.

Thanks lodbrok for that update!

Can anyone test and confirm on a LX503? Been waiting to purchase an AppleTV4K for this issue to be fixed or for Apple to release new hardware.

I want to make my 503 into a 7.2.4. Can I use an old Denon 5.1 receiver to run the surround back channel or do I need to pick up a stereo amp? Thanks.

If your old Denon 5.1 has 2+ analog inputs- you are able!

DV. Have you DV direct on the tv, with out the receiver? If yes-try to update firmware on both tv/receiver and than to switch all possible combination of tv/receiver settings.

May be, reset all settings can work. And plug off tv and receiver for 10 minutes. To be sure))

How future proof is this Receiver?

I just got the 503 from Frys for $498. I'm assuming it's on sale because Pio is discontinuing the model. How future proof this is? My main use for the receiver is for a 7.2 channel system hub in a medium sized room. Not so concerned about audio so much as video. My main concern is 4k and HDR compatibility since this will be my main home theater hub. Beyond that I really don't use any of the other features.

Also i will be using the 303 or 503 for 95% movies and 5% music. So 303 or 503 you guys thinking? I dont need a lot of power since I have the DIY Sound Group 1099's fronts and center that have crazy high sensitivity... seen here:

Not really much price difference for 2 more channel
Options,
But as you can see from my post afew above the 503 has much more beefy heat sinks on the amps then the 303 which one reviewer said made the 303 sound bad when played loud.

This is what pioneer said to do for Dolby vision.

You would need to set the receiver output in the INPUT/OUTPUT ASSIGN > TV OUT/OSD and set the HDMI OUT to MAIN + SUB and then the DOLBY VISION section will activate.

csh8428 For now this model has all video/audio option available. Except Auro3d(Imax enhanced). So, if you don't need this type of audio experience, for 500 USD - its really the best deal! Other options is twice expensive(Denon 4400/4500//Marantz 7012/13)!

as @mwinc said, the lx503 is a big step up. If you want to keep it around the $500 mark then the lx503 and the sister model onkyo rz830 are really the best deal right now. They have a ton of power, can go to 11 channels, have excellent phono and full preouts. The 303 was mediocre in hard core listening tests, but might be good for 95% movie usage. But again the lx503 and rz830 are big steps up in features so go for one of those.

The lx503 has universal mcacc and video upscaling. The rz830 has accueq advanced with no video scaling.

I have the Sony Atmos enabled speakers and ran MCACC. The measurement resulted in something like 6.5ft. The actual distance from driver to ceiling is around 3.5ft. Is MCACC measuring for the distance from driver to ceiling AND ceiling to listening position?

What’s up everyone , new to the site here. Picked up my 503 @ frys when it was on sale for $499, I missed the “secret phrase “ and missed out on the extra 20% off... so far enjoying the 503, only Question / issue I’m having is that for some reason , when I turn up the volume in certain inputs, the picture glitches...?? Any ideas?

Onkyo has done an excellent job incorporating a few of their features in with the classic Pioneer feature set.

I had been using the Pioneer SC-97. With technology progressing, I needed this new receiver to pass Dolby Vision, and I needed ALL HDMI inputs to pass 4K HDR (the SC-97 was limited to only the first 3 inputs). The VSX-LX503 works perfectly on all counts. No glitches, no issues, it just works.

The home menu system is TONS better than the old Pioneer menus and much more intuitive. I'm running a 5.1.4 setup (Dolby Atmos). What really amazed me the most is how well the MCACC worked. Normally after running the MCACC, I always end up doing tweaks to speaker levels and equalization. After running the MCACC on the VSX-LX503, I didn't need to touch ANYTHING. The MCACC worked perfectly and the sound is well balanced and sounds great!

I have all HDMI inputs filled with different components (4K Blue-Ray, Apple TV 4K, PS4 Pro, X-Box, Roku Ultra etc). This receiver handles all of them without issue. Dolby Vision from the Apple TV 4K works flawlessly. Switching between inputs is not a problem and fairly fast considering all the handshaking that's going on internally. Both HDMI outputs (one to a 4K TV and the other to a 4K projector) work perfectly as well.

Long story short, so far so good. At this price point, you really can't go wrong. The sound is excellent coming from this receiver and it can probably handle just about any HDMI component you can throw at it.
Have you had any issues with different inputs loosing picture as you turn up the volume? For some reason when watching anything on fire stick and the volume is turned up, the tv looses picture for a second and comes back. Also just now experienced it with the Xbox plugged in, did the same thing..

Try turning off ARC/CEC in settings.

Pioneer VSX LX503 Switching Inputs Automatically on Startup

Hey, wonder if anyone can help me with this. My pioneer receiver will turn on normally and after about 30 seconds will switch inputs to the Apple TV which is set to the STRM input. If I switch back to tv it stays on Tv. Any ideas? I’m guessing it must be detecting some signal from Apple TV but can’t find a setting to turn it off.

I would suggest turning of ANY HDMI (CEC) controls on all equipment, it causes more problems than it solves.

Sounds like a HDMI CEC issue. You can turn it off in the AVR settings and it should solve the problem.

I have been looking for a 7.2.4 receiver for the theater i am building for my new house for a few months and have seen few affordable options. I had a pioneer 9.2 receiver but it got sold with our house as part of the theater package. Saw this today at Bestbuy for $599 and picked one up. Then I cam here and read about the Frys deal so called bestbuy up and they prices matched the Frys $469 price. What a killer deal. Going to be a while before i have it hooked up, but nice to have a major piece of the puzzle covered for such a killer price.
