I emailed Emotiva over e weekend regarding questions either unanswered or raised but the recently released podcast. Here is the reply.

Quote:

Thank you! We are very excited for the launch!

1. At this time, we don't know what the plans for the pricing changes at that time. The understanding is the changes will be across the board, but have not heard which products and what the numbers will be.

2. We do not have a set date for the release of the expansions as we are all in on the RMC-1 product release right now. As soon as we have more information available

3. Same with pricing. we do not have firm pricing yet on the modules.

4. If the expansion modules are built into the RMC-1 before shipping, the 40% discount will apply to the whole unit (including the expansions). If the expansions are purchased separately from the unit, the discount will only apply to the RMC-1.

Thanks again for you shared excitement and best wishes for the RMC-1.
Best regards,

So at least we know that expansion modules installed by the factory are subject to the 40% discount along with the RMC-1. What we don't know is if the base price will be higher by the time they are available. The $280 discount ($699 -40%) may be less than any price increase!

That is very interesting information. Thanks for sharing. I swore I had heard before that the expansion modules would be discounted with either the 40% off card or Upgrade For Life discounts.

I for sure will want at least one expansion module and I have a 40% off card. For that reason, I may think about waiting on purchasing the RMC-1 until the expansion modules are ready to be installed and ship with the unit. However, I would run the risk of having a higher base price due to tariffs or other reasons. Hmmmmm....

It seems like the 15th came and went with no sales at all. I checked several times yesterday and no selling appeared.

On their website, it does not even say "Sold Out". It just says "Coming Soon". Wording aside, I'm guessing it'll be several months before it'll be readily available for shipping. After that, it'd be interesting to AB compare with the Marantz 8805.

On the Dolby Atmos decoding front, it already has the 8805 beat by a mile. As for the rest of its functionality, it remains to be seen.

Check the Emotiva Lounge thread. Their first batch sold out in six hours. Next batch due in December. Dirac Live said to be available Q1 2019.

So, Q1 2020?
Someone had to say it.
Not really, of course. But, I needed some (low hanging) fruit in my diet today.

Why does it have the 8805 “beat by a mile” for Atmos decoding?

Out of the box the RMC-1 renders 9.1.6 Atmos, and with the add-on modules, it can reportedly output even greaterAtmos speaker layouts. That's an 8805 killer feature right there, as long as there are no major issues or bugs with the processor.

I will be watching this thread but my concern is that this product will be riddled with bugs and will be slow to receive patch firmware. Now it’s not even receiving Dirac Live until “1st QTR 2019”. This product is not ready and they are releasing something with a major feature missing.

I hope it is successful as I may be interested in purchasing one but the track record is not good and the poor track record continues with a delay in a promised feature.

Any guess where the boards, with the IC's and passives already in place, are manufactured? The same question goes for the case and any other major assemblies. The RMC-1 is claimed to be assembled, instead of manufactured, in the U.S.A. That wording typically means the major subassemblies are made elsewhere. The boards are connected with ribbon cables that allow a lot of flexibility in assembly. If the boards and other assemblies come from China that could mean tariffs will affect costs.

I would think China. Although, I suppose possibly Vietnam. It's possible with tariffs that Vietnam's economy is gonna get a boost. Just uneducated guessing. I know Denon manufactures most of their receivers in Vietnam, so presumably Emotiva could switch subassembly work there if it's not already in Vietnam.

Emotiva has stated that after the first of the year they will be forced to pass along some of the costs of the the recent tariffs to the consumers. When Emotiva made this comment they were referring to all products or parts not manufactured in the USA, not the RMC specially. I'd wager Emotiva will let production for the RMC catch up completely to demand and then we would see a tariff increase (or more) on the RMC-1. Sounds like all other products will see a tariff price increase sooner than that.

Emotiva did mention they are going to pass along as little of the tariff increase as possible. Emo heard some other manufactures are passing along the entire tariff increase.

While I hope the RMC-1 is successful I am quite happy I didn't wait and bought a Denon 8500H. I will re-access in a year or two. Still looking forward to the reviews!

Now that they've dropped their "proprietary" upmixer (as reported recently by KeithL over on the the Emotiva Lounge), is that even possible...? I believe the consumer level HT DSU tops out at 9.1.6.

I know they've "hinted" in recent podcasts that something "glorious" was in the works, but if they're not doing it themselves, I'm not sure what could unless there's something new in the works at Dolby.

All I know is that they mentioned that with certain plug-in modules, you could increase the Atmos rendering engine, not that it would be handled by "upmixing."

DSU tops out at 17.1.10. The home version of Atmos can use up to 24 floor speakers and 10 height speakers. Of those 24 floor speakers, DSU can support up to 17 of them; and all 10 height speakers.

You're absolutely correct (and thankfully so). I just re-read the Dolby Atmos publication (July, 2017) and found this...

"Dolby Surround Upmixer:

When you invest in a Dolby Atmos home theater, you expect to get full use of all the components, even when the content you are playing is not mixed in Dolby Atmos. This includes taking advantage of overhead and Dolby Atmos enabled speakers to further enhance the playback experience.

Included in the Dolby Atmos technology bundle is a new advanced upmixer designed to be compatible with traditional channel-based as well as Dolby Atmos speaker systems. The Dolby surround upmixer expands the audio of channel-based content, including native stereo, 5.1, and 7.1 content, for playback through a Dolby Atmos system—regardless of speaker number or placement—while simultaneously honoring and maintaining the artist’s intent for the mix.

The Dolby surround upmixer analyzes and processes multiple perceptually spaced frequency bands, accurately steering each individually. The result is a surround playback experience characterized by precisely located audio elements and a more spacious ambience.

In a Dolby Atmos system, the channel-based mix is fully honored. Dolby Atmos enabled speakers and overhead speakers are employed to lend a sense of atmospherics or room effect to the listening experience. This new technology will process and upmix channel-based content to as many as 17 speaker locations at listener level and to 10 Dolby Atmos enabled or overhead speakers. Note: To maintain an accurate frontal audio image, the upmixer will not send upmixed audio to the left wide and right wide speakers or any speakers that are located between the left, center, and right speakers. Audio is not upmixed to the center surround speaker.

A center spread on/off control enables you to spread the center image across a wider front soundstage. This optional feature is ideally suited for playback of two-channel music content or playback of channel-based content in a home theater design that employs a wider screen configuration than typical installations.

Select the Dolby surround and center spread function from the user interface of the AVR or preprocessor, or from the system’s remote control.

Are any of those 17 front wides? Also are the 10 heights still split into left and right mono arrays?

I still don't understand why Dolby feels that upmixing to Wides will result in an inaccurate front soundstage. Hope they re-think that.
