So Axx80 series has issues with handshaking with the HDMI 2.1 ports on the LG 9 series OLEDs? This is rather worrying.

It is my understanding that the C9, and TVs in general, do not support this format as an input or passthrough.

You can find more information on this topic in the C9/E9 owner's thread here:

Weird, still comes up as just DTHD on my end, can't figure out why.

On a side note, after updating the C9 to 03.60.02 I'm now able to run the Sony UBP-X700 through the RX-A1080 without HDCP issues...

Can you get DTHD Atmos on the 1080 if you are patched: Sony UBP-X700 ---> RX-A1080 ---> LG C9 ?

Haha, mystery solved, and it is truly silly... While I was testing and swapping components back and forth I had simplified the setup and had the RX-A1080 speaker config set to just 3.0.0, and here's the catch: at least the RX-A1080 will not recognize/show Atmos for bitstream (DD+, DTHD) inputs if you don't have surround speakers configured. Reenabling the surround speakers, Atmos/DD+ and Atmos/DTHD comes back up as expected. Contributing to the confusion, the RX-A1080 recognizes Atmos/PCM (from Apple TV) regardless of speaker config. Ah well, silly me for wasting time on this...

Atmos/DD+, Atmos/DTHD and Atmos/PCM all work across eARC as well. I have not been able to get any better than Atmos/DD+ over eARC from the internal C9 apps, but I'm guessing that's more of an app limitation at this point.

Any luck with your Panasonic player using the new C9 firmware?

Unfortunately, updating our LG C9 to 03.60.02 did not fix the HDCP2.2 handshake fail between the Panasonic DP-UB820 ---> RX-A3080 ---> LG C9

Dolby Atmos out of the RX-A3080 using the DP-UB820 Netflix app

I had a PM question on a particular scenario using the RX-A3080 with the Panasonic DP-UB820's Netflix app.

The question: Can you get Dolby Atmos out of the RX-A3080 using the DP-UB820 Netflix app?

Here's the scenario:
Netflix Atmos content (Luke Cage) ---> Panasonic DP-UB820's Netflix app ---> DP-UB820 HDMI video/audio output ---> RX-A3080 AV1 HDMI ---> RX-A3080 AV1 HDMI output 1 ---> LG C9 eARC

TL;DR: no

The Panasonic DP-UB820's Netflix app recognizes the RX-A3080 ---> LG C9 as a valid Atmos chain, but when you play the content, it is only available as "Dolby Surround - DD+" on the RX-A3080.

A 4K Atmos disc plays Atmos normally on the RX-A3080 with the same connections: DP-UB820 HDMI video/audio output ---> RX-A3080 AV1 HDMI ---> RX-A3080 AV1 HDMI output 1 ---> LG C9 eARC

LG C9 firmware: v03.60.02
Panasonic DP-UB820: 1.55
Yamaha RX-A3080: 1.65

While testing the question about the DP-820 Netflix app, I discovered that the LG C9 Netflix app either does not support Atmos or does not recognize the RX-A3080 as a valid Atmos output chain.

Note: I haven't researched whether the LG C9 Netflix app supports Atmos or not on the C9 owners thread yet. I am assuming it does.

Scenario is:
Netflix Atmos content (Luke Cage) ---> LG C9 Netflix app ---> LG C9 eARC HDMI 2.1 ---> RX-A3080 AV1 HDMI output 1

Result: LG C9 Netflix app does not recognize a valid Atmos output chain (or does not support Atmos, see note above)

LG C9 firmware: v03.60.02
RX-A3080 firmware: v1.65

As I see it should work on the C9, but not on the Panasonic (only Apple TV 4K and Xbox One supports): https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-s...du-and-amazon/ Maybe a future firmware update will resolve the issue on the LG.

Note that this test was run with the decoder set to "auto" which is why the display showed 5.2.4.

With the decoder set to "straight" there are no presence speakers on the display.

RX-A3080 firmware v1.65 with LG C9 firmware v03.60.02

If you update your C9 to v03.60.02 you will break the eARC enabled by the RX-A3080 firmware v1.65.

You need to reset the C9 to factory settings and that will restore eARC with the RX-A3080.

Unfortunately, I do no know of any way to backup/restore the settings on the C9, so it's a re-setup job.

LG C9 firmware: v03.60.02
Panasonic DP-UB820: 1.55
Yamaha RX-A3080: 1.65

Some additional testing on this:

Test one:
Video: Netflix Atmos content (Luke Cage) ---> Panasonic DP-UB820's Netflix app ---> DP-UB820 HDMI video/audio output ---> LG C9 HDMI 3
Audio: Netflix Atmos content (Luke Cage) ---> Panasonic DP-UB820's Netflix app ---> DP-UB820 HDMI video/audio output (bitstream) ---> LG C9 HDMI 3 --> LG C9 eARC (bitstream) ---> RX-A3080 HDMI output 1 eARC

In this test, the DP-UB820 Netflix app showed only "Dolby Vistion" and 5.1 audio

Test two:
Video: Netflix Atmos content (Luke Cage) ---> Panasonic DP-UB820's Netflix app ---> DP-UB820 HDMI video/audio output ---> LG C9 HDMI 3
Audio: Netflix Atmos content (Luke Cage) ---> Panasonic DP-UB820's Netflix app ---> DP-UB820 HDMI audio output (bitstream) ---> RX-A3080 AV1

In this test, the DP-UB820 Netflix app showed "Dolby Vision" and "Atmos"

In both patch scenarios, selecting "Straight" mode on the 3080 showed 5.2 on the 3080 display.

Yes.

You can then use each of the two patterns to include in different scenes, e.g. one viewer, two viewers.

I've just reviewed the YPAO section in the 3080 user manual. I'm unable to find any reference to being able to run a 2nd YPAO based on speaker configuration/pattern. Am I missing something?

Had this issue with known good high speed HDMI cables. Finally gave up and ordered Belkin “Ultra HD HDMI cables” and my brand new (February 2019) RX-A3080 would finally connect to my ROKU and OPPO boxes. The Amazon reviews drove my cable selection. Seems there are many supposed HDCP 2.2 capable cables that have deficiencies (or Yamaha is looking for bits that are not properly transmitted in some cables??). Link here for what I bought: “Belkin Ultra HD High Speed HDMI Cable, Optimal Viewing for Apple TV and Apple TV 4K, 4K/Dolby Vision HDR, 2 m/6.6 ft – Black” [edit link to make http proper]:

2) Copy pattern one to pattern two (manual page 131)
3) Run YPAO, which will again set the results into pattern one

That will give you two different patterns based on the two different YPAO runs.

Select either pattern one or two along with the other settings, input, etc. that you want and use the configuration to set a scene, e.g., scene 4.

Repeat the process with the other pattern, settings, input, etc. and use that configuration to set a scene, e.g., scene 5.

For example, I use this method to set scenes for either one viewer or two for different input devices.

Thanks! Although I was aware of the "copy" function, I didn't realize that running an additional YPAO program wouldn't overwrite both speaker pattern settings (leave speaker pattern #2 intact). It would have been so simple for Yamaha to make this fact known in the user manual.............

Turns out it was a lightning strike, and its wasn't complicated for me to fix but it took a while changing components.

Anyone have any ideas?

I just pick up an RX-A1080 from a customer that said it wouldn't turn on. He scrapped the unit and I was able to repair it.

I have the unit in my bedroom with very little space. The only speaker I have at the moment is a single Mackie HR824 powered studio monitor (I have 3 of these in my main living room theater ). It has an XLR and 1/4" input.

I'm getting sound, but the issue is that multi-channel sound is being sent to the monitor so I get bits and pieces of the overall sound.

The question...is there a specific sound/output setting to simulate the front channels to a single speaker (not at all concerned with surround right now)? I'm using the RCA pre-amp output and going to the 1/4" input on the monitor.

After several P.M. dialogues with 2 helpful owners of both the Panasonic UB820/9000 UHD player and Yamaha RX-A3080/CX-A5200 I purchased a Yamaha RX-A3080 with the expectation that I would get Dolby Atmos from my UB820's Netflix app. I can report that, without any question, the UB820 does provide Netflix Atmos via this receiver/Pre-Pro combination.

I can't comment on whether or not the RX-A1080/2080 is capable of this outcome, but all previous generations of Yamaha AVRs were incapable of "unpacking" the DD+ codec as Atmos from the UB820/9000. As I had previously stated, this was solely a problem with previous Yamaha AVR decoding of certain DD+ Atmos "packages", and not specifically due to the app in Panasonic's current UHD players providing Netflix Atmos.

EDIT: Atmos is still unavailable for the UB820's Amazon Video app, with "Jack Ryan" only decoding DD 5.1 on my 3080.
