"Official" Onkyo TX-RZ630, TX-RZ730 and TX-RZ830 thread. Hopefully there are others on this site that have one or more of these receivers and will be willing to share their knowledge and experiences with me and any others that come here for answers and guidance. Bear with me, as I am new to this forum, I'm trying to model this thread after other "official" threads here in these forums. I will work on posting links for Onkyo, their services and other important links.

My current set up consists of a Sony XBR-900E 4K HDR television, an Onkyo TX-RZ630 powering 2 Klipsch R41's, SVS Prime center and 6 Polk T15's. I have 1 MTX 12" 150watt active sub, an old no name 10" sub in it's own enclosure and an old Velodyne enclosure that now has a Kicker CVR 10" dual voice coil driver and the latter 2 subs are powered by a Sony STRZA-810ES. This is all configured as a 5.1.4 Atmos/DTS-X system.

Welcome. If you are going to start an official model thread, please review the Denon threads started by JDsmoothie and others. There is a lot of work and upkeep to maintaining a thread of that magnitude. Please review those threads and let me know if that's the level of work you want to take on?

Thanks for starting this!
Been looking for an “official “ thread since before I picked up my 830 back in October.

Will post some thoughts and questions in the near future.

I'm at work all day, but I'll look over some of those threads. I have worked as a news writer for XDA Developers and Android Headlines, so I have some experience in this sorta thing, I just didn't realize this was gonna be bigger undertaking than I thought.

What I was trying to say was I'm at my job all day 8am-6pm. I have handled working on the payroll for other websites, so it's not I don't have the experience, ability and know how to keep up such a thread, it's gonna come down to- do I want to maintain a thread that needs daily attention. Give me a day and I'll give you an answer, then you can either delete this thread or clean it up so I can get to work. Thank you for your time.

Guess it's time to shut down this thread? Rather leave it open to someone who it's invested...

Yeah. I thought I'd have time, but I don't. I've got way too much going on to keep up an "official" thread. I have no problem with you shutting it down.

I have used my onkyo 830 for 2 months now, i am happy with it, but i wish they would make it so i could have the display show sound format instead of source, i can switch but it always switch back to source...

Quick question, what is the build quality like on this. One thing I noticed a couple weeks ago when I was at Best Buy looking at AVR's is the comparable Pioneer AVR (I believe it was a SCLX701) had a chintzy plastic fold down door to cover the buttons whereas the Denon X4500H had a nice sturdy metal fold down door.

I am currently looking into upgrading my NR1008 and it might seem small but if the RZ830 has a flimsy plastic door I would probably opt to go another route as the cheap plastic wouldn't sit well with me.

I had an rz920 for a month to test to compare to an rz800. Build quality definitely seemed lower.

One area where it seemed they really cheaped out was the remote control. You'd think the thing you hold in your hand frequently would be high quality even if the unit itself wasn't (how often do you go near the avr itself - almost never for me).

Overall everything about the 920 seemed like a downgrade compared to the 800 (except the newer features like dv passthrough, etc).

I think D&M is driving the entire segment to lower costs. They offer a lot of features for the money and their units seem very low quality.

Of the big players Yamaha has by far the best quality builds. But you usually pay more for it.

I have never owned a Yamaha and they are never really on my radar but I just looked up the RX-A2080 and that looks comparable to the RZ830 and X4500H except that fact it cannot do 11.2 processing like the Denon and Onkyo. That may not be that big of a deal as I am not sure I would ever do 11.2 processing but it would still be nice to have the option in case.

Off to do more reading. Thanks for the response.

The RZ series all have a front panel made from what's best described as one solid piece of "billet" aluminum. I own the 630 and I can confirm the front of the unit is aluminum which gives the unit a real sturdy and we'll built feeling to the touch.

I can't agree with you more! The unit my 630 replaced is a Sony STRZA-810ES, the Sony allows for many different display configurations including your own custom displays. I've looked and looked and pressed every button combination trying to make the ATMOS designation stay on the display with no luck. This is probably my ONLY complaint with 630. I'm completely happy with everything else. The Sony is more powerful on paper than the RZ630 and is an "ES" series receiver but my 630 mops the floor with the Sony. My Sony has been relegated to subwoofer amp duty. The display on my Sony now says SUBWOOFER, lol. It's kind of misleading because in almost every picture I see from Onkyo of any RZ receiver, the display reads DOLBY ATMOS, giving a false representation of what it will display "real world", this has always made me wonder if we're missing something and this can be displayed permanently.

When the x4500h and Elite lx503 (rz830 cousin) go on sale at Frys grab one!!! They are half the price of the Yammy and forum members here seem to love them. Yes they both have a ton of features, full set of pre-outs, zone 3 or can expand to 11.2, which you will probably never use, but there are guys here with 8 subs in their living room theaters. Overkill is the way!

Good luck!

Thank you, that is what I was hoping to hear. When I was in BB looking at AVR's the other weeks the X4500H had a nice sturdy metal door while the Pioneer Elite 503 had a flimsy plastic drop down door that just felt cheap.

I will keep an eye out for the X4500H but I wold rather opt for the RZ830 over the LX503...just something about the plastic fold down door that turns me off. It may be small but if you are getting ready to drop a grand or more I want the feeling that I am getting something with a quality build.

Coming from a lifetime of Sony's ES line of receivers, I was skeptical when I was waiting on my 630 to arrive. When my 630 showed up, the first thing I noticed was it's size and weight. It's considerably larger than my STRZA-810ES and a lot heavier, as far as I'm concerned, 2 important traits of quality. I've had my 630 for more than a month now and it has not disappointed. I ask for more and it gives me more. Onkyo definitely stepped up their game with the RZ line of receivers. Another RZ specific feature that nobody really talks about is they have real aluminum feet with a machined finish.

Should I upgrade my TX-NR737 to a TX-RZ830?

I got an e-mail from Onkyo ([email protected]) with an offer to upgrade my TX-NR737 that I bought in November, 2015.

I can upgrade to a TX-RZ830 for an incredible price.

Should I do it?

There is a lot of buzz right now on this forum with Onkyo owners upgrading to the rz830....seems there is a frenzy to get one before the deal ends.

It has 11 channel processing (with ext amp) good phono stage, tons of power, full pre-outs, good room correction, 3 zones possible BUT no video upscaling, if you care?

I also just got an upgrade offer from Onkyo
I currently own the TX-NR646
They are offering me the TX-RZ830 for $499
Is it a worthy upgrade?

What deal? The only deal I'm aware of today is for the RZ730 (which brought me here)

Took the plunge...was going to upgrade towards end of year for atmos but price and extra power too much to pass up. I didn't get the email but said I did. Did not have to explain as whoever I spoke to was well aware of deal. Only question asked of me was why I was upgrading.

Check out the great deals forum on the main page. Onkyo sent an email out to prior owners offering upgrades including the RZ830 for the same deal price as the RZ730 that originally led me down this road too.

Yeah I'm in for a 830. Hope it's as reliable as my RX-A2000 has been.
Before I ordered, I asked the salesman if the 830 was 120 wpc at 8 ohms all channels driven, and he replied yes. Looking at the specs it says "120 W/Ch (8 Ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHz, 0.08% THD, 2 Channels Driven, FTC)" can anyone elaborate?

Salesman is wrong. No one rates receivers all channels driven.

If I had the vertical space I'd order an 830 at the deal price in a heartbeat. Alas, I'll have to stick with my NR656.
