New 3.1 receiver

So I'm looking for a new receiver as my Marantz Nr1403 seems to have some hissing noises. Figured it would be more worth it to buy a new receiver then to get it fixed but maybe I'm wrong. Did some searching around but wanted to get some advice. Currently have a pair of HTD Level 3 speakers, plan on picking up the matching center and eventually a sub. Currently leaning towards hsu vtf-2 for the sub. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Good sub choice

Do you have a budget and are you leaning towards another Marantz?

Doesn't have to be a marantz. I was looking in the 300 - 400 range.

The Onkyo TX-NR686 is the bang for your buck receiver, especially when caught on a sale. Denon AVR-S740H is another good budget receiver. If 5.1 is all you'll go up to, then the Denon AVR-S640H is just as good.

My current mancave room setup:
Vizio V436-G1 4K HDR TV | LG UBK90 4K Blu-ray player | Denon AVR-S740H AV Receiver (running 5.1.2 Atmos/DTS:X) | Xbox One X | Amazon Fire Stick 4K

I saw that the Onkyo NR-585 also got good reviews as well. Any benefit to getting the 686 over this. I see the price difference is not that much, just curious. Thanks.

Yea @cocrh is correct there are a lot of recommendations right now for the 686 (on sale at Frys cough cough) as well as the 7850 from Costco.

If you want to compare features, AC4L has a great search tool. Here are your 5 channel options https://www.accessories4less.com/make-a-store/category/avreceiver/home-audio/receivers-amps/home-theater-receivers/1.html?number_channels[]=5

The s640h is on on that list as @Zoland2020 suggested.

The TX-NR686 just has 10-20 extra watts per channel and a extra HDMI input, the difference between the two is ultra-minimal at best.
