So the only change from last year's NR686 is support for Virtual Atmos and Virtual DTS:X for those without height speakers installed.

175 a channel at 10%%%%%%%%%%% distortion wtf....what kind of rating is that. At 6 ohms too. Let's just get the elephant out of the room please. Let's rate all power supplies at 99% harmonic distortion. 100000 watts of P-P-P-POWAAAAAAAA.

The press release is a little confusing the way it's structured, but will this guy support IMAX Enhanced?

IMAX Enhanced certification program is available only on 9.2ch and up devices, the TX-NR696 is a 7.2ch receiver...

My TX-RZ1100 has been trouble free and runs cool going on two years now. It is in my family room so it is powered on most of the day. My Marantz 8805 puts out a lot more heat than the Onkyo.

I recently bought this receiver and it's awesome. No HDMI issues at all (they advertise "refined HDMI grounds") and it sounds great.

I definitely prefer this to the Denon X2500H I just bought.

The Stereo Assign should also let You play Stereo on the Surrounds, not just the Height.

I use this function a lot on my Onkyo.

Can @LeoRavus confirm this is true also in the 696?

Yeah you can assign stereo to play from the fronts, surrounds, surround back or height. I usually pick THX Music and haven't really played with the stereo mode much.

For me listening mode depends on the source. Some things sound better in certain modes than others.

Like now I'm streaming CCR in DSur 7.1. I'll click through the various modes and stick to what sounds best for that track.

This receiver is still kind of new to me and trying out various things.

Same here about just discovering the potential.
I will give a second chance to THX Music ...

Thinking of upgrading my old receiver Onkyo 626 to Onkyo 696. What is your experience so far with the new Onkyo 696?

Got my 696 a few days ago.
Had trouble getting any image on the TV. Probably an EDID issue. Turned the TV off and on again and it worked.
Other than that, so far so good. Love the sound quality, compared to my older Harman Kardon unit, which couldn't really drive my speakers properly (only 50W per channel)...
For stereo inputs (music streaming, etc) I prefer the "All Channel Stereo" mode over the THX... but that's just me.

I just picked one up from BB, it was on sale. The website doesn't reflect the sale price but it was a nice discount. I've yet to unbox it, waiting for the new TV to show up Sat then I can watch my wife lose her ***** as I unveil them to her. I'm coming from a older HK AVR3600 receiver. Anxious to get this one installed!!

TX-NR696 AccuEQ trouble

Hello,

So I just received my TX-NR696, I ran AccuEQ but am running into some odd behavior, basically the red flag for me that none of it is trustworthy is what it does with the sub, basically no matter what the sub volume is set to the AVR will set it to anywhere in-between 0 and +2, if it's cranked all the way up it just sets the distance to be lower and when turned down it thinks it's further.

For the other channels everything is either 0 or +1 and crossovers at 100hz rears 80hz center and 40 hz front l/r (I was planning on manually changing crossovers anyway)

Any tips or should I just try and learn how to manually calibrate? Or return it?

Speakers used:
Center: Klipsch R-52C
Front L/R: Klipsch R-820F
Surrounds: Klipsch CDT-3650-C
Sub: HSU VTF-3 MK5 HP

I wouldn't worry about what AccuEQ does - just set it to your liking. AccuEQ has a bad rep but none of these room correction programs are infallible.

I'm not sure it's working at all though...I guess a manual calibration would be better anyway ...I'll just have to rely on one of the apps.

disappointed from TX-NR 696 music performance

i got my TX-NR 696 thought that i was upgrading my TX-NR 636
but unfortunately i found its a backward setup
my old 636 was giving a very tight clean punchy bass out of my yamaha NS-SW300
with sub-woofer level set to 0 from the sittings and woofer volume level in the middle
now with the new tx-nr 696 i have to turn on all levels to the max to get a very unclear bass from it
the old 636 was having something called initial volume from settings that was giving sound more dynamic details
can't find the same on the 696 and i have to turn the volume to 40 or so to hear some details

I need help trying to figure out how to engage Dolby Atmos virtualization with Xbox games and 4k movies. I upgraded the firmware but when I'm playing an Xbox game I don't get the options in the listening modes besides multi channel, game rpg, game action, game sports, game rock, full mono, and direct.

On 4k movies I get some additional options like DTS-X but still don't understand how to engage Dolby Atmos.

I've got my Xbox set to "let the receiver decode" in it's settings. And bitstream to Dolby Atmos. But the display on the Onkyo says it's in PCM mode.

Dolby Vision Help

Hey all! So, I know this is the 696 forum. However, I can't find the info I need elsewhere and am hoping to get some good info from someone with more knowledge than me.

I have just picked up the TX-NR686 and hooked it up to my system this evening. I am passing all my devices through the receiver to my Vizio M658-G1. However, the Onkyo is not passing through Dolby Vision. Is there a setting I have missed? I have an Apple TV 4K; Samsung UHD Blu Ray player and neither will give me DV running through the 686. They both will when I hook them straight to the TV, however. I have new Monster HDMI cables that are up to spec as well.

Thanks!

Sony XBR-55X850C
Onkyo TX-SR444
PS4
Polk Audio 5.1.2

You might check your settings that enhanced mode is on. I figured this out by searching others forums and found you have to press and hold the BD/DVD button then press the power button. You will see it say enhanced on your Onkyo Display screen.

The next thing you have to do is go into the settings of the Onkyo and change slit to Main+Sub in the audio settings and you will an option light up to allow Dolby Vision passthrough

That main plus sub setting is under the TV/Out setting. Then you change the HDMI out to Main+Sub and Dolby Vision will light up

Anyone actually have experience with the "Vocal Enhancer"?

It's on all their recent models so not exactly a 696 question, but this seems the most active thread.

It would be a convenient feature if it actually worked, but I have no idea if the effect is any good, and it sounds like it might be disabled a lot of the time anyway, making it useless marketing fluff.

So again, anyone actually used the thing? I appreciate any insight.

I tried it a few times.
It seems to redirect voice from the center channel to the Fronts. I didnt liked it at all. I preferred increasing the center's channel level.

I bought this receiver 2 weeks ago. I can't get Arc to work in my older Panasonic e50 TV. My hdmi cable supports it. Unsure if it's the tv or receiver. So I tried optical input and the cable won't fit! I tried two cables. Never had this problem before. Could the receptacle be defective? Any else experience this?
