Which receiver should I get?

I am ordering this:
- Klipsch (1 Pair) R-51M, Klipsch (1) R-52C, Klipsch (1 Pair) R-41M, Klipsch (1) R-100SW

Power rating:
Power rating needs to be at an 8ohms impedance with full frequency bandwidth per 2 channels driven.. preferably 100+ w/channel

What I enjoy doing:
- Watching movies via Plex, TV, and streaming
- Watching TV shows on Netflix and HBO
- No gaming
- Not likely to upgrade to 7.1

Budget:
$500

What kind of receiver can I get for this 5.1 system?

For better overall performance, I'd be budgeting the $500 for a sub and about what they're asking for the Klipsch sub on the AVR.

Just about any AVR up to $300 will be fine. I lean towards Denon mainly for their Audyssey auto-EQ, so...

Factory refurbished Denon AVR's | $230 - $300 range.

[BTW, here's a pretty good <$500 sub: Hsu Research VTF-1 Mk3.]

Costco (and some other places) have a Yamaha TSR-7850 for $490. Folks aren't sure exactly which model this translates to, I suspect it's a rx-v685 plus an alum front panel. It's on my short list.

Costco often has that Yamaha around $400.

It falls in between the RX-V685 and RX-A780. It looks like the A780 without the 5th foot and 3 year warranty. But Costco has a great return policy.

Not sure if you have a Fry's around but might get in on this. If you go in they sometimes give you 20% off coupons or ask a manager for one.

It appears that Denon is just about to release a new line. I've never watched a new line come out so I can't say if that means much as far as new features go, but the current stuff is getting discounted all over the place. People post some killer deals at Fry's. But the best deals are usually in store only and they have stores in just a few states.

They're not actually Todd. Klipsch play silly buggers with their specifications. Their consumer lines routinely "miss" their claimed sensitivity specs by 5 - 6dB (and up to 9dB!) when tested by generally accepted methods. For example, the slightly larger but similarly configured (to the R-51M's) RP-150M's only achieved 88dB/2.83V/1m when tested [here] versus 93dB/2.83V/1m claimed.

I do agree though that just about any entry-level AVR will do the trick.

I am looking at:
Yamaha RX-V685
Denon AVRX3400H
Denon AVR-X1500H

To pair with my new LG C8 OLED TV

Does anyone have a thought on what the clear winner should be?

Aperion Verus Grand Bookshelf L/R
Aperion Verus Grand Center Channel
Aperion Verus Forte Satellite
SVS PB-1000
Denon X3400 / LG C8 65inch OLED / ATV4K

Good unit, but you're overspending on it in comparison to the speakers/sub you're scoping out. Too much emphasis on the contribution of electronics towards overall system quality...

Guess this means I sell my speakers and subs in a couple years and buy better ones and this receiver will still function fine? I got it for $600, what you think?

The X3400H is a 2017 model. The X3500H is a 2018 model. The 2019 model may be an X3600H, although I'm not sure that is has even been announced yet.

The X3400H is the lowest end Denon model that includes Audyssey XT32, and there may be a significant amount of value in that. XT32 is bundled with SubEq, which does semi-independent equalization of two subwoofers. I think that few other mass-market AVRs can do that.

It's possible that you could have done better on the price, or bought an X3500H (2018 model) for the same or less, but $600 for a new X3400H isn't bad. Don't worry about it.

Klipsch consistently are over rated by by 6 db. They are still generally more efficient than the competition.

As long as you got it from an Authorized Seller for warranty purposes, you are doing fine. And yes, it will function fine with better speakers and subwoofers. I would probably go for a new subwoofer before speakers in your case. As a matter of fact, I would return the subwoofer if possible, and get something like the recommended HSU instead.

Hey bro, I live in Southern CA too.. If I visit my local Frys, do I just ask for a promo code or should I just pick up the receiver? Their online price says $999, so what do you recommend?

Also, do you mind sharing a screenshot of your receipt? (with your private information redacted of course). It'll help me push the manager lol

@drh3b thanks for the tips!

It might be a little more than you need right now, but I think the Denon x4400h for sale at A4C is a great price on a great unit.

Edit: Also going for same price at Amazon (A4C is the seller there as well):

It was a one day flash sale but I understand that they do occur regularly at Fry's on the 2018 models especially with the 2019 models coming out in the next couple of months:

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/122-g...00h-399-a.html

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/90-re...l#post57921848

Keep an eye on the "Great Deal Found" threads for this and other greats deals posted by members and AVS.

Edit: Or just hang out in this thread until some brings the deal to you

@drh3b dude! I got the AVR-X3500H From Frys for $399!! New!!

I can't believe it guys! Thank you!

Call your local Fry's, make sure they still have them! They're going like hotcakes! Make sure it's new and follow these steps:

1. As soon as you enter Fry's, there should be someone standing at the door. Ask them for a coupon (they'll give you 20% off)

2. Go to the audio department and ask for a new X3500H and ask them for the sale price. It should be $499. Take that price to the check out line. It's important you get the sale price from the audio department, because sometimes the guys at the check out line have the $999 recorded in their system...

3. When you get to the check out line, and after they input $499 for the receiver, throw down your 20% coupon and just wait. Don't ask "can I use this?" Just drop it on the counter and stay silent.

4. If they give you trouble, ask for the supervisor or manager and ask them to honor it. They usually will.

5. They'll charge you $499 for the device at checkout, then walk over to the customer service area (with supervisor or the person helping you in checkout) and get a refund for 20% off the $499 price. Overall, you'll get the unit for $399.
