Bought the RZ740 on a black friday deal I could not resist, upgraded from an older onkyo TX-SR608 :P

I wanted the new features of music streaming, 4k HDR, and I will expand my 5.1 to a 5.1.4 very soon.
Previously i have prioritized 4k HDR over the HD surround formats, and had to settle for the compressed formats through ARC.
I'm a bit unsure whether I just want eARC or if I will need it in the future.. but I am still considering to return it.

I did comment on onkyos facebook page a couple weeks before about the eARC difference on 740/840 since they appear to have the same hdmi board, and asked if there
would be a firmware update to activate it on the 740 or if it was just done this way to keep the two models more separated.
I don't think they liked it, because yesterday I tried to write the onkyo email support with the same e-mail of my facebook account, and the automated error message response I got included this message:

<(my email adress removed)>:Sender address rejected: Access denied

I tried multiple times, same error... Then i tried another email, no issues...
I have not been in contact with onkyos email support before this, so im 99,9% sure the facebook comment did it.

This customer experience definetly suggests I should return it
but I want to like it, it sounds good, it has almost everything i need, except for eARC
Are there any other issues that is not resolved?
How long after release will Onkyo typically release firmware updates/fixes to their receiver products?

@VisionxOrb I was reading some European installer forum when I was trying to decide between the rz830, 920 and 1100.

In addition, the firmware update allows the owners of a number of Onkyo products to enjoy native Amazon Music support. Such capability requires either a Prime Music or Amazon Music Unlimited subscription, and is accessible via Onkyo Controller app for iOS/Android or remote control and the OSD/front panel of selected products. Amazon Music capability is available on the Onkyo PR-RZ5100, TX-RZ3100, TX-RZ1100, TX-RZ830, TX-RZ820, TX-RZ730, TX-RZ720, TX-NR686, TX-NR676E, TX-NR575E, TX-NR474, TX-L50, BASE-V60, HT-S9800THX and LS7200, as well as the Integra DRC-R1.1, DRC-R1, DRX-R1.1, DRX-R1, DRX-7.1, DRX-5.2, DRX-4.2, DRX-3.2, DRX-3.1, DRX-2.1 and DSX-3.

I was also obsessed upgrading to an Onkyo with eARC (main reason 7.1.4).
I finally got the 840.
Now that I have it, I don't think we'll be ever using it.
The whole idea of the AVR is to have all the sources through the AVR.
Think about you have TV ans AVR with eARC: do you picture any scenario using it?

Yes, I have a Kodi box to playback all my local media, but for netflix and similar apps, I use the apps on my LG OLED.
I would like the 840, but i got the 740 at 55% of the best price available for the 840, so I think I can live without the eARC.

They way Onkyo threated my question, and went through all the trouble of finding and blocking my email and just providing a bad customer experience suggest they will keep eARC disabled in firmware to have more people buy the 840 over the 740.

No, as far as I know, you only get atmos encoded in the dd+ signal from Netflix, and that works in ARC.

but in the possible scenario where different streaming services start a war on quality, we might be so lucky to get lossless, or at least less compressed..
Until that happens, ARC should be sufficient for everything streaming services has to offer

Hello everyone and Happy Holidays,

I'm picking up a RZ840 right now via Onk's trade in program. It's like $650 out the door and I'm at the checkout debating free ground shipping or pay for 2nd day shipping lol. I have no interest in using the internal amp as I have a Rotel RMB-1095 in a 5.2 setup, and I prefer all channels driven.

Does this unit function well as a processor?

Thanks!

Edit: I ordered it with 2nd day delivery. I forgot today is Friday and I want it in time for XMAS. I'm excited to finally own a newer receiver/processor!

I LOVE the receiver too. I really miss some things from the Denon and only one from the 681, but I wont change the Onkyo sound for any other brand Again!

By the way, I know some people received an update to Dolby Access App in the XBox to version 3.1. Did you? I was hoping the new version solves the issue.

I'm not sure I trust them. Not much evidence aside that their owner manual says (page 127 lists what the * means next to all the sound fields/listening modes) that Multichannel 5.1.4*3 - means no height output. Now when my xbox is set to bitstream atmos and my receiver is saying multich PCM - game action 5.1.4 - I do hear audio from the upfiring speakers. But I feel like it's essentially 5.1 being output to all the speakers - opposed to getting the specific object based sound you're supposed to get. I'm never getting any feeling that audio is coming from above me.

Just for accuracy, the xbox cannot bitstream atmos from games, only the blueray app which has its own setting. Game use MAT2.0 which sends the atmos as multi-chan pcm.

hi,
Playing movie by Netflix from AppleTV 4K, either 1080p or 4K, why my RZ840 always displays it as 23p (by press "i" button on remote control) which must be 24p(23.976p)?
Anyone has the same issue?

perhaps it calls 23.976hz 23p and 24.000hz 24p.

Most likely.

One note though the Apple TV 4k plays 24.000fps back @ 23.976hz. Long-standing bug.

Absolutely not, I worked for the movie industry in LA, and many movies are shot at 23.976hz.
This frame rate is the official one with the film camera.
Digital cameras have the ability to set the frame rate at that speed.
It means that Apple TV follow the original frame rate used for the movie.

No that's not the case. Content can be either 23.976 or 24.000 (among other frame rates).

Many Netflix original content shows are filmed at 24.0fps and not 23.976 (for reasons I do not know).

The Apple TV 4k plays these native 24.0fps shows back at 23.976 which is wrong. Other devices do not have this problem.

There are many posts in the Apple TV thread about this.

Back to the op many devices show 23p for 23.976fps content, 24p for 24.0fps content, 29p for 29.97fps, 30p for 30.0fps content, 59p for 59.94fps content, 60p for 60.0fps content, etc.

A movie that is shot at 24hz should be played at 24hz.
A movie that is shot at 23.976hz should be played at 23.976hz.
Apple TV is respecting the choice of the movie director (Motion Picture is art, not computer science).

Hopefully the RZ840 pass whatever is sent to its input.
If it was a movie dedicated to gamers, it would be 60hz.

No it is not. Apple TV plays back 24.0fps content at 23.976.

It is NOT respecting the choice of the movie director.

Thanks all you reply.
I notice 840 marks AppleTV 4K SDR/HDR @60fps as 59Hz also.

It's a little bit annoying.

My old only NR1010 can play music files directly from NAS through NET/DLNA. It's so simple and easy.
Now RZ840 totally cannot find the NAS.

Update on 16 Jan
Problem solved.
Do the media settings on NAS, choose RZ840

RZ840: NET/MUSIC SERVER/NAS to play.

It's same as DLNA on the old platform.

It's a little bit annoying.
More than likely Apple TV 4k is outputting 59.94hz to a TV when set to 60hz.

The Onkyo is reporting it correctly.
