Receiver for Music vs Movies

Somehow some receivers good for Movies (e.g. Denon) and some for Music (e.g. Marantz?)

Can anyone explain to me what does it mean? What makes a receiver good for music vs movie? Isn't it all about SQ? Aren't movies contain music?

A good receiver is a good receiver (quality parts, build, amps, dac etc.) and delivers good sound quality. It doesn't know the difference between music and movies.

People get carried away with pigeonholing adjectives to a receiver. I have a Marantz SR7011 and watch 99.9% movies only. I wouldn't call that any more or less suitable for music.

Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, Onkyo, Integra and Pioneer are all good for movies and music. Each has its own cult following...I happen to love Integra gear.

Marantz has hdam circuits which I believe are supposed to create a cleaner electrical path thus better sound?? It's over my head but there you go! On the other hand, Yamaha has lots of nice dsp settings that are supposed to make it very musical.

Typically the room correction is only used for movie playback, with sub. Stereo playback (2 channel listening) typically bypasses room correction altogether and just gives it all to your LR speakers.

I have no idea if you are looking for a receiver or not, but I already posted this today so do a search if you are. Here are some good popular choices in receivers right now. Check the deals thread and the great found deals thread for prices and where to buy. This is just off the top of my head, there are a lot more that others may recommend that I overlooked.

under $600

yamaha tsr-7850 (7 channels)
denon x3500 (7 channels)
Pioneer lx303 (9 channels)
Onkyo rz630 and nr787 (9 channels)
Pioneer vsx-lx503 (9/11 channels)
Onkyo rz830 (9/11 channels)

over $600
Denon x4400/x4500
marantz sr6012/6013
Yamaha a1070/1080/2070/2080/v2085

big boy toys, but still reasonable (under $2k)
NAD 758 v3 - excellent room correction
Denon x6300/6400
Marantz sr7012/7013
Yammy a3070/3080

Hope that helps?
