old receiver as power amp

can I use an old receiver as a power amp to power my atmos speakers? I have a denon 4400 as my main.

Sure, people do it often. It just requires a pair of analog audio inputs. (Maybe auxiliary inputs.)

The main awkwardness is a lack of a function to automatically turn it on when the 4400 is turned on.

If you'd like a slightly more elegant option, https://www.parts-express.com/dayton...ifier--300-593

It accepts a 12V trigger. I believe that it alternately can be operated as an auto-on device (like a powered sub).

(A 12V trigger line is simply a cable with a 3.5 mm mono male plug at each end. Cheap.)

depends. as far as the denon 4400 goes, yes. The 4400 does 11 channel processing. SO all you need out of the old receiver is 2 channels - assuming you are going to a 7.x.4 set up... otherwise you are already set for a 7.x.2 with the on board amps.

since you only need 2 add'l outboard channels, you can use any analog input on the old receiver - make sure you set the old unit to "direct" mode so it doesn't apply an y processing. Turning it on may be a manual thing if it doesn't have any 12V trigger inputs...

good luck

Yup. Lots of helpful information provided on the 2017 Denon AVR's in the first 8 posts of the Owner's thread to include how to expand the X4400H from 9CH --> 11CH.
