Yamaha Aventage a1080 or a3080 ?

Well water got on my downstairs HT Aventage a2010 😟. Looks like it’s time to get a new receiver. 🙂. The AI surround sounds pretty cool. Supposed to help with hearing dialog when switching scenes which would be pretty great.

What real benefits would I get with the 3080 over the 1080? I found the 3080 for as low as $1200 used $1500 new. The $1080 for $750 used and $1000 new.

Upstairs I have the rx-a3070. I was considering getting the 3080 and putting it up there. I do have XLR connections on my speakers with adaptors right now. 3080 has them built in.

I guess I am thinking the 3080 may be overkill for my low end speakers and projector downstairs. I am about to pull the trigger on a new 4K laser DLP projector downstairs so video processing is important.

Thoughts ?

Thanks 🙏

@dlllhg the a3080 has excellent reviews, but i think audioholics said the balanced outs have noise and yamaha is looking into it, iirc?

The a1080 has 32bit dacs, 1 more hdmi out and maybe earc, but if you do not need those and are never expanding past 7 channels then the a880 should be fine.

If you do not need the better dacs or 5th foot, are ok with LR preouts and want to save some $$ the tsr-7850 is on sale. Maybe you might want to expand past 7 channels or need 3 zones and don't want to spend the $$ for a2080, get the cousin rx-v2085, it is often on sale for the same price as the a880.

Get the RX-V2085, seen for as little as $799 (from Adorama).

Well I went to Magnolia and was able listen to some demos.. I was able to switch between the Aventage 1080 the 880 and some other lower $500 model. I couldn't really hear a big difference between the two more expensive ones. They actually have a 50th anniversary sale and the 1080 is $999 while the 3080 is $1699....

I was also able to listen to the AI Surround sound. Impressive sums it up. Guy working there was a real audio nerd and spoke a different language than myself. He actually wasnt aware of the AI feature they added. He gave me a bunch of reasons that a purest wouldn't want to use such a feature. We put on some movies and turned it on and off. He changed his opinion. Said he would definitely use it for a lot of his viewing. Sounds were much more clear and room filling. Distinctive ... The problem now is I want this in both HT

He also had me thinking about replacing the Bose L/R/C For some small Definitive Tech Speakers which sounded much better than my Bose. Frustrating thing I bought my parents a Bose Lifestyle for $1000 5.1 and powered Bose sub plus a $500 Yamaha and their sound is much better and fuller than mine I guess my older direct reflecting speakers arent even good on Bose standards lol Heck I even considered selling my Mark Seatons. I rarely listen to music up there. 99% TV and movies. Sonos through out the house. When I do use them for music I love them but it is rare. Honestly I listened to some $400 book shelf speakers with a small sub and a fairly small center channel and it sounded great for movies... The Mark Seatons are so darn big in my room and I sit about 7 feet from them.

Im sold on the Yamaha and the AI Surround. Now just need to decide which one... or two ........ Wonder what my 3070 would sell for.

FYI looks like the 3080 only has L/R XLM built in
