Yamaha TSR-7850 or Something Else

Hey all,

I'm still new to this forum and just moved into a new home that needs a good setup.
After some budgeting and research I think that the TSR-7850 would be great for me. I have a couple of questions regarding this.
I have found this for $490 new (Costco) or $350 renewed (Amazon). Is renewed reliable enough and worth that price difference or should I go new?
Speakers aside, for now, if this wouldn't be your choice is there another receiver you would get for around that new price budget ± $50?

Thanks everyone for any input you have! Hope you all have a great holidays!

Keep an eye out for a sale on that TSR-7850 as it will be lower most likely in a week or two.

Also keep an eye on the Denon X3500H sales.

At that price point would you recommend one over the other or whichever I can find the best deal on?

My 2¢:
- Shop the name brands (Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, Pioneer, Onkyo).
- Find a couple or three receivers that have the connectivity and features you want.
- Buy the one whose (Black Friday or other) sale price best fits your budget.

Costco will have it on sale again in the ~$400 range shortly if not by Black Friday then before Christmas.

Thanks, will definitely wait for that then. What are your thoughts on it at that value and in general?

It is a good deal and Yamaha has been a very reliable brand.

If you're in a rush, this is a good deal also.

Thanks for that, but I'm in no rush. Would rather get what I want at the right deal.

Renewed, refurbished, "open box" whatever is a binary lottery. Typically you'll win and save some money. You may lose and then you can post your troubles on this forum, which happens occasionally.

New units typically have longer warranties. Use of the Costco Visa card at Costco, or anywhere else, will add two years to the manufacturer's warranty on a new item.

If the unit was used for demonstration in a store then it may have run for 12 hours a day for six months. It might be good to be more careful of units used for demonstration.

On average you'll likely win, although the odds are unknown. On average there is very likely money, perhaps a significant amount, to be saved.

If you cross a stream that averages two feet in depth you may drown.

Having an inside brand connection...
I can confirm the average % of discovering a fault within an AVR sold as refurbished B stock is 17%..

Just my $0.02....

About 15 years ago had a bad experience with two refurb AVR's from HK, they both went back, have bought
new since.
Currently TSR-7810 from Costco,works great,love it.

Thank you very much for that valuable information!

I know I sound like a broken record at times, but as a note to all, prices close to refurbished prices on new equipment can often be obtained by getting multiple quotes no matter where you shop.

Do note that the dealers who visit and contribute information to this site usually have excellent prices and reliable service. I don't attempt to list these dealers because I may leave someone out plus the rules on this site aren't always clear on this subject. I'm in no way connected to these dealers. I'm sure that at times (or often) they find my posts aggravating, but I do recommend them.
