Not so good stuff:

The fan on mine is noisy. Every report I've read so far has said that the fan is silent, so I think I may have gotten a bum unit. I think what's happening is that the mesh fan cover is vibrating ever so slightly against something, because if I push on it with my finger the noise mostly goes away (but not entirely). This is with the unit reporting a 1000 rpm fan speed. I might unscrew the fan cover and mess with it to see if there's a quick 'n dirty fix.

In a rack it can’t dispose the heat from the top, that’s why you need the fans and others might not. So I think it’s not a bum unit.

No, it made the same noise outside the rack. Also, there's no other equipment above the AVR (its vents are not obstructed), and the rack is open on the back. Also also the fan spins up to 1k rpm as soon as the unit powers on regardless of temperature. Also also also it shouldn't be the case that I can press on the fan cover and have the noise go away

Today I discovered a software bug on the T778. The bug is that saving and recalling the preset associated with the BluOS input does not work if it is set up from the front panel touchscreen. It DOES work fine when set up via the OSD.

I submitted a report to NAD support, but thought others should be aware.

Ok, I have good news. I had asked Dan who works with 'The Sound Counsel' in Edinburgh about whether the NAD T 778 included discrete sub outs. Here's what he said:

'They do not have details or time frames regarding DIRAC Bass Management they can share with me at this time. Their developers are working directly with DIRAC to provide this feature in a future update, as yet we are unsure if this will be paid or free. I suspect it will be a paid upgrade but it hasn't been confirmed.

Right now, the sub-woofer outputs are independent according to NAD, which makes sense if they hope to add the bass management module as this would most likely be a technical requirement at the hardware level.'

https://www.avforums.com/threads/new.../post-27853864

So, it is at least in principle possible for the NAD to make use of all tiers of Dirac Bass Control. It may cost a pretty penny for the software upgrade, but at least we wouldn't have to purchase an additional module for subwoofer outs (thereby making the AVR cost closer to the M17 or other processors). Very, very good news.

Well so much for the marantz for films I really like it, but for music I definitely prefer the nad. I should have kept it and got it professionally calibrated.

Dirac has a somewhat steep learning curve if you're really trying to dial it in. What did you prefer in the Marantz over the NAD for movies? How would you compare the pros/cons of each unit?

For music the marantz is to bright and trebley, I could listen to the nad all day but my wife would say it could be boring. For films the marantz just fills the room with sound and it sounds good with plenty bass and impact. The nad sounded empty but the bass was quick and tight. That was me calibrating it but if I get Nick my dealer to do it he would take the full day to do it so i think it would sound a lot better.

You can match that with the NAD with the right target curve. It sounds like you like the multieq function of audyssey.

I have ordered one and getting Nick to do Dirac and he will do 3 profiles for me. As he has done lots of installs. I could do it myself but I know he will do a better job. Looking forward to getting it.

Hi guys

Looks like the 778 communicates just like the older units, so my info/remote app should work. If anyone wants to test it please follow this link for a beta:

Please let me know if you run into any problems – and also if you don't Thanks!

I don't want to be the downer here, but it doesn't. It supports ARC, but not eARC (which is an HDMI 2.1 feature). ARC has the bandwidth to get you up to 5.1, but will choke on 7.1+ and won't support Atmos.

It does support eArc, which is a feature found on HDMI 2.0b. This is found through the NAD VM310 (as opposed to the VM300).

We're almost talking about the same thing…ARC is HDMI 2.0b, and is supported by both the VM300 and VM310. eARC is new in the HDMI 2.1 specification, but it looks like eARC can theoretically be added to 2.0b devices via software. None of NAD's T778 documentation mentions this yet, but it's mentioned in the M10 specs and I'd be thrilled if they snuck it in here, too. I'll just have to get an LG C9 to test it out

Well this is funny, as the new ARCAMs are 2.0b and support eARC. Hmm ?

Also another quick question to the 778. And sorry for my ignorance if it was mentioned somewhere else, but is it now possible to change the curves after Dirac ? Can we change loudness etc..

This is what NAD support says about eARC support:

"Vishnu M. (NAD Electronics)
Mar 27, 5:14 AM EDT

Hello Markus,

Thank you for contacting the NAD Support Crew.

Regarding the T778, eARC is supported on T778 (and older AVRs upgraded to VM310).

I hope this information helps.

Kind Regards,

Vishnu M

Plenty of HDMI 2.0b AVRs from the past few years support eARC and even some TVs, such as those from Sony. LG TVs are essentially the only devices with that supposedly have a full set of HDMI features at this point.

Fundamental design flaw

While the 778 looks like a competitively priced Dirac Live AVR it is still unknown whether it will get Dirac Live Bass Control or not.

Furthermore there is a fundamental design flaw in all NAD processors that is also present in the 778: Tone controls and channel volume is applied downstream of bass management. So if you are using a subwoofer, all the redirected bass from all channels (except LFE) is NOT affected by tone controls and channel volume whatsoever.
The solution for this misbehaviour would be to move tone controls and channel volume upstream of bass management. Unfortunately NAD does not consider to change their implementation – this is how NAD support responded:

"[...] We just received confirmation from Engineering that we are not going to change the audio chain to allow tone controls to affect the sub out. [...]"

"[...] The T778 uses a similar design and the same DSP board as the T758 V3. Hence the tone controls work the same. Ditto for the channel volume buttons via the HTR8. [...]"
