AVR + AMP |Vs| Seperates, Pros/Cons

Hey guys,

My question of the day is what are the Pros/Cons to going with a AVR + AMP vs. just getting separates? The idea being that I can get a AVR to start with to power my speakers at somewhere 50-100w for awhile and to save up for a AMP and later using the PreOuts on the AVR to have the dedicated AMP drive the speakers at 100-200w.

Or is there a large enough quality difference if I just get a AV Preamp/Processor and AMP and skip a AVR all together.

I'm thinking of a 5.2.2-4 or 7.2.2-4 and i've been looking at the Denon AVRs for price, Marantz AVRs for its HDAM module, and a Marantz AV7705, and a Monolith AMP for any of the solutions I go for.

Thoughts?

I suppose the idea is that you'll get better-quality components, design and/or engineering in a dedicated pre/pro than you will in an all-in-one AVR, so your pre/pro + amp combo should give you better overall sound compared to an AVR + amp combo.

If costs are comparable, getting the pre/pro seems like a no-brainer. If there's a premium for the pre/pro, then IMO it becomes a matter of deciding whether the premium is worth the expected/actual/noticeable improvement in sound.

That question comes up quite a bit. Here's a sampling of previous threads asking for Pro/Cons of Sep V. receiver
