Roon Tested Compatibility Coming to Denon & Marantz Products

Roon is a pricey but elegant way to get high-quality music streaming throughout your house. The company works with streaming services Tidal and Qobuz. Now, Sound United brands Denon and Marantz have announced that 68 products from the two companies are set to receive Roon Tested accreditation.

The company's "product" is software that acts as a server as well as an extensive database of info and links about bands and albums. This is advantageous if you have a multi-room music system consisting of various Roon Tested devices. Roon is robust because it runs a local "core" on one of your PCs, so it responds quickly to commands.

Oddly, the company will not offer a monthly subscription. After the free trial, you can choose between annual payment of $119, or if you really love Roon and trust the company has a business model that will last, a lifetime payment option is available for $699. Either way, you have to fork over some bucks to get the product.

---------

Here is the full press release including list of products that will offer Roon Tested compatibility:

Vista, Calif. (March 23rd, 2020) — Sound United LLC, parent company to Denon, Polk Audio, Marantz, Definitive Technology, Classé, and Boston Acoustics, today announced several Denon and Marantz products received Roon Tested accreditation. This certification enables music lovers to seamlessly stream music from Roon server or Roon Core devices to 68 Denon and Marantz products for a visually rich, and easy-to-use listening experience.

“A critical aspect of the listening experience is learning more about your favorite artists, song writers and bands. It makes the music more intimate and alive,” said Brendon Stead, senior vice president of product development at Sound United. “In the past this intimacy was delivered by the record or CD covers and has been missing from digital online music. Roon helped pioneer this type of experience in the world of streaming music. We’re very excited Denon and Marantz is now Roon Tested so our enthusiastic listeners can continue discovering more about the music they love.”

Leveraging credits, artist relationships, genres, lyrics, concert/tour dates, artwork, and more, Roon adds a new dimension of music exploration to user libraries. By merging Roon Tested devices from Denon and Marantz with local digital music files and high-resolution streaming services like TIDAL and Qobuz, listeners receive a cross-platform networked music ecosystem with server apps for Roon Nucleus, Mac, Windows, and Linux. Control is managed via apps for Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, with networked audio output capability to any Roon Ready, Roon Tested, AirPlay™, Chromecast, Mac, Windows, iOS, or Android device on the network.

“We're excited to have worked with the Sound United team to ensure the best possible experience of Roon with dozens of Denon and Marantz products. Few brands in audio have the storied histories of Denon and Marantz, and we're honored to be a part of their future,” said Rob Darling, Directory of Strategy at Roon Labs.

Another benefit to the Roon interface is its unique approach to TIDAL and Qobuz streaming integration. Now Denon and Marantz users can enjoy their personal content libraries seamlessly merged with their high-resolution streaming favorites so searches and playlists will include content from both sources.

Denon and Marantz are offering a free 60-day Roon trial coupon for a limited time. Interested users can learn more at Roonlabs.com, Denon.com or Marantz.com.

So is this going to work like Spotify connect? some sort of link between the Roon app and the HEOS app with playback managed via HEOS?

Nothing. Roon still streams to D+M AVRs via AirPlay. “Roon Tested” is basically an official endorsement from the Roon folks that D+M devices will work with Roon, but as far as I can tell this endorsement doesn’t bring with it any additional features.

I was hoping I’d be able to now stream hi-res files from Roon and get native playback on my Marantz receivers, but I still need to use my Auralic streaming DAC (which is Roon Ready) for that.

So is there no way to send roon to a Marantz tested product other than over wifi? Is airplay limited to 2 channels? Only certain bitrates? Not bitperfect?

So Roon managed to get some dosh out of Sound United in order for them to put a 'tick of approval' type thing on their website + shipping cartons?
Well done to the Roon sales team!

So what was the point of the news then. Just making it official . Alot of us had better expectations when we saw it. Personally i think it was pointless to put it out like that.. no harm

Not sure but it was a big disappointment and a waste of time thinking you're doing something wrong trying to get it working as an actual Roon endpoint when its really just Airplay...

$119 a year is pricey? Not in this hobby. Not to mention it's a bargain at that price if Roon is something you want. Which I do.
As others have said it's just Airplay which could already be done and Roon doesn't even do Airplay 2.
When I first saw it I thought oh someone finally did Roon compatibility in a receiver, maybe even RAAT, but no....
So this announcement doesn't really mean anything other than free publicity for Marantz/Denon and Roon.

Sound United have a very active marketing team on AVSForum and What HiFi right now (amongst others), so press releases and paid features about products / updates come thick and fast. I'm certainly not against AVSForum making bank! But I would say that not all news is relevant and press releases need to be clearly expressed as such + interpreted by readers as such.
We don't want bias.

Although, that's clearly too late for What HiFi...

Nobody is paying to get press releases posted on AVS Forum (I know you did not claim that, but worth mentioning).

You'll recognize "paid features" i.e. sponsored posts because they are tagged as such. For example last year there were some IMAX Enhanced-sponsored posts that included Denon and Marantz gear, but fwiw IMAX was the sponsor there, not Sound United. There have not been any recent sponsored posts from Sound United that I am aware of.

One thing about press releases... I will not rewrite them anymore. A lot of sites just rewrite the release and post it as "news." But that strikes me as a waste of time and a good way to make mistakes while leaving out relevant info. So instead I post the entire press release and label it as such, clearly.

It is of course up to the reader to understand that a press release for a product is not a review.

Anyhow, Denon and Marantz are top AVR brands, both here and in the world in general. So it's only natural that they will receive coverage whenever news about them comes up.

Haha, after reading about a million comments on what constitutes cheap or expensive or whatever, I'd say it's chump change for some, and a lot for others.

Now, obviously, it's "just" $10 per month which most people do not think of as being much. But let's say you keep your AVR for 5 years and subscribe the whole time... that "feature" just added $600 to the cost of the AVR over its lifetime. Not insignificant.

Now... if you understand EVERYTHING you can do with Roon and you take full advantage of that, you'll get your money's worth.

Roon does a lot more than organize your music and add meta data. You can basically add any device you want to a whole home audio system without having to buy specific brands. There is also room correction, upsampling, MQA unfold..... Its pretty awesome

Just to point out: if you're using Audyssey, you are limited to 48kHZ, which negates the value of listening to TIDAL or Qobuz with speakers; you still get the benefit of higher-resolution audio if you listen to headphones.

24-bit/48 kHz already has the main theoretical benefit of hi-res, which is higher dynamic range.

I dont use headphones barely. Like to listen thru my system speakers.. sounds pretty good granted nothing to compare to.but i do have a question amazon ultra hd is streamed via heos and in the upper left hand corner is sample rate. At times depending on track i have seen higher than the 48khz .. or am i mistaken.. not home right now to check so oppologies.
