Denon Introduces 2020 X-Series AVRs

New Denon X-Series AVRs with HDMI 2.1

The 2020 X-Series AVRs from Denon are here. Get ready for some major upgrades in capability including HDMI 2.1 for 8K HFR and eARC, DTS:X Pro (on select models) for the most immersive sound and even a “pre-amplifier” mode that disengages the internal amps. There's a ton more that's new in these 2020 models.

The new models are the Denon AVR-X6700H ($2499), AVR-X4700H ($1699), AVR-X3700H ($1199), and AVR-X2700H ($849 MSRP). Denon also plans an HDMI board upgrade to 2.1 for current AVR-X8500H owners.

Shared New Features

• 8K & HDMI 2.1
• Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization
• VRR (variable refresh rate) support
• Main Zone HDMI/TV Audio distribution to zone 2 or HEOS speakers
• Quick/Smart Selects store all zone stereo settings
• Bluetooth transmission to headphones
• HDMI Custom Input Assign
• HDMI Input Auto Rename
• AirPlay Disable
• Roon Tested

“This is a very big year for Denon. Not only are we introducing the first 8K-ready receivers, but we’re also celebrating our 110th anniversary. This company has been on the forefront of technological advancements throughout its entire existence, and the introduction of 8K is the next exciting chapter in our history of excellence,” said Jake Mendel, product marketing manager for Denon AVR & Hi-Fi components.

“8K certainly is an exciting update and the new X-Series AVRs offer a suite of new features that gamers, home theater enthusiasts and music lovers can implement straight away. If you’re serious about upping your 4K game and getting your home theater ready for 8K, these are the best AV receivers money can buy.”

Sadly, by the looks of it, no 8500H replacement. I would have been all over that.

Seggers
8500H HDMI board upgrade is what Denon will offer instead. The catch is the unit will need to be sent in for the upgrade.

Already upgraded X8500H units will also ship once the new board is out.

With the HDMI 2.1 board upgrade becoming available in December, the X8500H will become the X8500HA. As a result, a successor model won't be released until 2021/2022.

I really hope that most HDMI 2.1 features are available on all the inputs. If VRR and 4K 120 are only available on the 8K input it would be big pass for me. Only one 8K input would be ok if that is how it will work as I dont see 8K taking off anytime soon. In my opinion anyways.

What the heck, the ONE 2.1 port is only 40gbps? Is that real HDMI 2.1? Well not that it really Matters now...as nothing can currently take advantage of the full 48gbps IMO heck even LG downgraded their new 2020 OLEDs to only 40gbps from the 2019 48gbps models.

I'm focused purely on all the gaming features too. For just my media room, I've come to the conclusion that there is no way to get all the flexibility needed for multiple devices other than buy an LG OLED for it's 4 HDMI 2.1 inputs then use the earc feature to the AVR -assuming that works properly. Opposite of what I am use to but if it works without hassle, so be it.

earc on the oled is not working properly. At least not on the C9 models. Not sure about the CX. I know a firmware fix for this in the works. I cant pass surround to my current AVR from the TV to the AVR from my PC because of this. Not sure if the issue affects consoles or not. I primarily game on the PC so it is a big deal to me.

I am not taking advantage of VRR/Gsync because of this so the Denon has me pretty excited!

Thinking a 3700 and Monolith 3X to take advantage of pre-amp mode for about $2,300 is a heck of deal.

I don't think either NVIDIA or AMD offer anything more than HDMI 1.4. Could that be a reason why you are having issues with earc? Isn't that a 2.0 feature?

I dont believe so. I think it has something to do with how the LG handles the audio being passed from the PC to the TV. Earc would be sent from the TV to the AVR so I dont believe there would be an issue there. I am running my PC to the AVR because of this. I linked the C9 issues thread. There is a link about Earc in the first post.

https://www.avsforum.com/forum/40-ol...ware-more.html

Also.... this is what specifically affects me on the PC audio end.

Feature affected: eARC
Description: does not pass-through 6/8 channel LPCM, only 2.0 channel LPCM (Stereo);
Mitigation: the C9 can be forced to accept 8ch LPCM with an (HDFury or similar) EDID adapter inserted between the source and the TV - RTINGS tested again, and AudioEDID manipulation does not actually work on the C9; But with an HDFury DIVA inserted between the C9 and an AVR the 5.1 LPCM pass-trough works!;
Incidence: general and permanent until further notice;
Status: LG has been informed, waiting for a resolution, there are faint signs (via LG customer support) that this issue may be resolved in a future firmware update - expected delivery: June 2020;
LG support ticket: https://lgcommunity.us.com/discussio...c-pass-through
Notes: discovered by RTINGS.com; reported to John Archer of Forbes.com ; should be easy for LG to add the necessary 6/8 channel LPCM EDID to the AudioEDID section of the HDMI ports via a firmware update;

So... I am hoping the AVR-X2700H resloves my problems as I prefer using an AVR anyways. I run a PS4 and Nintendo Switch through it as well.

No front HDMI input is a deal breaker for me. I'm so glad I got my 2600 with that input for $449, and it will tide me over for a few years until this all sorts itself out.

I remember when DTS was the audiophiles choice for movie sound but since Dolby Atmos, DTS and DTSX are taken a backseat to Dolby nowadays . I still feel DTSX still a much robust format for recreating movie sound at home .
