Anthem MCA-50 vs Halo A31?

I have the option of purchasing a Anthem MCA-50 5-channel for or a Parasound Halo A31 3-channel.

I plan on using the amp I purchase to power my front 3 channels (left right and center). The remaining (surrounds) will be powered by another amp I already own. I have a Marantz 8802a processor and The fronts are canton reference 7.2 DC’s (with marching center).

I can afford both amps. I am willing to splurge on the Parasound over the Anthem but only if it makes a difference in sound.

I don’t care for aesthetics, or bragging rights, the units will be hidden. Warranty etc aren’t important, these are used units, they are flawless. I know one is a 3 channel the other is 5, but that isn’t a deciding factor for my needs.

What do you recommend?

Amps largely don’t make a difference in sound as long as both are generally decent quality and driven within stated limits. However, the Parasound has about 2 watts of Class A bias into 8 ohms before it goes into Class A/B operation. Two watts is pretty loud, and some people believe that Class A sound makes a difference (whether because of harmonics, lower distortion, etc.). So it is likely that they sound identical, but if they do sound different, it’s probably the Class A bias. You may want to look into things like warranty and noise floor of both models as well.

Both good amplifiers.

I would go with the Anthem. It has a better S/N ratio by several dB and slightly better THD. It's also designed and built in North America, Canada.

Parasound is designed in the US and built in Taiwan.
