Great point, unlike Emo, Outlaw still has sales. Just requires a little planning on when to purchase.

There is no perfect display, quit looking for faults and enjoy

Adding $500 to the price (and Outlaw charges for shipping) impacts the value significantly. Often there are discussions on this forum of using an AVR as is vs. adding external amplifier channels. A large part of these discussions revolves around the added cost for added amplifier channels. This higher price moves the Model 7220 further from active consideration.

The new X13 subwoofer, while offering reasonable value, also seems to be priced higher than some of the competition. The competition also offers good products. In the past Outlaw has appeared to position themselves as a value/low cost proposition. It is hard to see Outlaw as more of a premium priced product.
The 7220 is still the cheapest fully balanced amplifier on the market i believe so it is still a good value i am glad i bought it when i did. I can tell you when i owned the Emotiva Gen 3 it does not sound as good as the 7220 not even close as far as the Monolith i have not heard it so i can't comment.

Actually the introductory price was $2150 which is what i bought it for. Then when the introductory price ended it went to $2300 and now with the price increase it is now $2800.

Thanks for the information.

You choose (very) wisely. Not sure $2,800 would be as wise...

Video ahead of sound. Lip Sync Issue

Anyone else have issues with video being ahead of the sound after adding a new amp? I have mine connected to the the front 3 channels and started noticing lips moving way before the voice is heard. This is opposite of typical "lip sync" issues, right?

You should re run calibration (YPAO).

I reran YPAO right after adding the amp. Perhaps not after buying the disc player. I will try that.

You don't need to run it again after adding the disk player you have a a/v sync issue are you using any upscaling on the Yamaha or the disc player or both if so shut it off. If the upscaler is off on both devices turn on a/v sync under hdmi settings on the Yamaha and see if that helps.

So I may have a happy ending. To update: I went to test this and saw the yamaha had a firmware update so I decided to do that first. Low and behold, I can now reach my lip sync menu (unaccessible before). What's more, the sync issue is gone with no adjustment required.

So thank you very much for the suggestion! I have my fingers crossed my issues are resolved.

I really appreciate you taking the time to consider my problem and respond.

Looks like the 7140 was just taking off the web site this past week. I tried to call to get some info on a replacement but was sent to voicemail. I know it's been MIA for about a year now but does anybody have any info on what's going on with it or a replacement?

There's talk of a new amp to follow the 7220, so it seems probable the 7140 is history. But these things can happen pretty slow. Pester them on the phone if you need an answer, or email.

I have a feeling you are probably right which is a shame. I just loved the size and weight of the 7140, and the specs looked great IMO for an amp of it's size. Maybe a replacement will be similar.

Any word as to why they discontinued the 7140? I bought one when they first came out (didn't seem that long ago) and really like it.

Nothing that I can find... I called about a month ago and the guy I talked with said that they were going to produce more for the holiday season. I have been keeping an eye out for it on their website and noticed it was removed this past weekend. Not a good sign in my opinion.

I just called and got to speak with Ben this time. Evidently they posted this update on their forum at the same time the 7140 was removed. I didn't catch it because the 7140 forum was moved to the legacy area. Here it is for all interested:

Since the Model 7140 has been out of stock for an abnormally long period of time, we've understandably had several inquiries into its status. We've answered those who have contacted us directly, with accurate information at the time of inquiry, but it is now appropriate to provide a public announcement to bring everyone up to date.

Starting last year, our entire industry encountered major electronics parts shortages. This has continued into 2018 and has clearly impacted the Model 7140. Along with our suppliers, we worked to acquire parts from alternative sources without making sacrifices to this amp. Despite our best efforts to resurrect this model, it was not feasible. Recent increases in parts, labor, and most recently additional tariffs, put the final nail in the coffin for the Model 7140.

We knew we had to offer a new moderately priced seven channel amplifier. This design is now finished, tested, and approved. Our replacement amplifier should be ready for sale, in limited qualities, by late December or early January. Stay tuned for more information.

So it looks like a replacement model is coming shortly. He confirmed that on the phone as well.

News from Outlaw today, and a special introductory sale, the new model 7000:

http://outlawaudio.com/products/7000x.html

Quote:
Similar in style to the Model 5000, this new amplifier is rated at 7 x 130 watts (all channels driven) into 8 ohms and 7 x 200 watts into 4 ohms. In addition, the 7000x also offers both RCA and XLR inputs.

I was curious about this bit from the description:

Quote:
As with all Outlaw gear, we focused on designing something that had a neutral sonic signature, low total harmonic distortion, and plenty of headroom. Similar to our previous 7-channel amp, the Model 7000x uses chips from THAT Corporation, to design a balanced input stage that provides common mode rejection, ensuring high fidelity performance for those who experience EMI or RFI in their listening environment. For those using unbalanced inputs, we've also utilized a differential-sensing RCA circuit to help reject input hum.
Are they saying this is a fully balanced ATI amp? Like the 7700/7900?

It's says it uses the same chips as THAT corporation. It might be an ATI design but I don't think this is a US built ATI amp like the 7140.

Sad to see the 7140 go. It was a good amp for efficient speakers and those that don't have huge spaces to fill.

I asked via email and I got a quick response directly from the Outlaws:

Quote:
No. Fully balanced means hot, cold, and ground are separate the whole way through the amp from input stage to output stage.
Unlike other amps that just have an XLR connector, and offer no common mode rejection, the Model 7000x has a balanced input stage that offers common mode rejection (to reject noise from interference), but is not balanced through out the whole amp.

it was odd - the 7140 was available and in stock *very* briefly. A few months?

Who knows? It could be that ATI had a minimum order requirement to keep producing it for Outlaw. ATI maybe wanted to stay out of the lower cost/lower powered amplifier business. A bulk of their other OEM designs are 200w+/ch.

I think they said they had a hard time getting certain parts for it, so that is why it went away and they refocused on this unit.

A few thoughts on the Model 7000x:

If you are interested in the AV7705 then get quotes from the authorized resellers on this forum.

Outlaw upped the price of the Model 7220 twice within a month or so of when it came out. Introductory price to reasonable to ridiculous IMO. Hopefully this product will not follow that price course.

Note that an A-weighted filter is used in the 20 Hz to 20 kHz distortion measurements according to the specifications on the Outlaw Audio website. An A-weighted filter would cause the measurements to drastically understate the actual distortion vs. measurements of other equipment taken with no weighting.

The picture of the inside of the Model 7000x on the Outlaw website shows a lot of wires crammed into a small space - a messy layout IMO. Wires are antennas for noise - sending and receiving. Oh, and Made in China.

They also don't list the SNR. IIRC, the 7140 was excellent in that regard.
Black adder likes this.

Lyngdorf MP-50 | Yamaha MX-A5200 | Ascend Sierra Towers | Ascend Sierra Horizon | Ascend Sierra Lunas | Ascend HTM-200SE | SVS SB-13 x4

All good points everyone. I may just go back to my original plan in getting three Model 2200 for my front stage and use the AVR for the rest.
