@Geronimo.USMC : "Maybe time for an update to the guide".

I of course track the descriptions of changes made to REW, and always install and test the latest beta version, but the enhancements and bug fixes are typically in the finer technical details of the software. The REW Guide is meant to provide the new REW user with basic guidelines on how to get things started. The assumption I make is that the typical user will use the default settings in the software, and use the REW Help file to gain a more detailed understanding of what the various options are. I try to make updates when basic features change, but would never attempt at keeping track of the more detailed technical changes. If you are aware of a specific section of the guide that needs to be revised or updated, please let me know.

1st of all, Thank you for your contributions. It is greatly appreciated.

I was thinking maybe with the new acoustic timing reference options, maybe you could expand a little clarification there on how to set the delays for speakers:

Ultimately, a setup that allows global DSP, or automated room correction, would be a significant improvement. And being able to isolate the sub with a setup that allows mains to be configured as small with crossovers would also be a big improvement.

So, you could continue to experiment with placement. Perhaps there is a solution that provides better overall response without swapping out your equipment. Good luck.
So I am now considering a equipment overhaul. Short of a magic spot in the near 12" surrounding my speaker placement, bands(music) with a heavy bass guitar sound terrible.

Will simply adding a DSP be enough or should I continue looking at additional acoustic solutions/ building a Hemholtz resonant absorber for the corners?

I hesitate to make recommendations when your setup is so different from what I am used to. And I would certainly not make the promise that implementing DSP will solve your issues, especially since applying DSP to your audio signal is not straight-forward.

If you were starting with a blank slate, I would recommend adding a pre-Pro or receiver that would allow you to 1) set your mains to small with crossovers, and 2) give you a dedicated subwoofer output that would allow a DSP device to be used. I would also consider a pre-Pro or receiver with automated room correction, like Audyssey or Dirac.

I would not go wild with room treatments until you have the basic equipment in place. This is all just my opinion, of course. Perhaps others will have opinions as well.

Lesson learned on downloading the newest beta 15. Lol

Can’t get Asio to recognize inputs and outputs. Then it said umik was in use by another application.

Tried reinstalling asio and and old version of rew and then back to the newest. Can’t get anything to work.

I think others were having issues too.

Not sure what the fix is other than fiddling with it and patience.

Make sure ASIO4All is in its advanced mode to be able to select multiple devices. Make sure the UMIK is not the default Windows recording device to fix the device unavailable problem. I have finally tracked down what causes that issue with the default Windows recording device and ASIO4All so it is fixed for the next build.

Thanks!! Got it working.

For some reason, sometimes when I hit the measure button it closes out REW and I have to re-open it. Might just need to reboot my puter?

I'm trying to learn how to make a house curve in REW to later export into 2x4HD after.

I read the section on page 96 of the REW guide on how to do it, and while it does show you, it doesn't teach you. Can anyone point me in the right direction of how to create (not export) a house curve plz?

Well, the attached screenshot shows how to create the house curve by simply clicking the "Add Room Curve" option. Once you have selected the option, a number of additional settings that define the room curve are available. Experiment with different settings, and click "Match Response to Target" for each group of settings. Continue experimenting until the shape of the predicted response meets your objective. Clear enough?

REW, miniDSP HD and UMIK-1

I have a Yamaha RX-A3080 and am interested in tuning the sound using REW. I think all I need is the UMIK-1 and the REW software and with that I can create an eq map which I can configure in the Yamaha's parametric EQ, is that correct? How about the sub? Are there adequate adjustments in the receiver or would I need the miniDSP to configure the sub?

Thanks!

when I use rew/umik/marantz avr I am mainly tweaking speaker/sub positions and adjusting sub amp controls. if I really get desperate I tweak speaker/subs distances in avr. if none of that doesnt help/fix, then the minidsp is usually used. ofc some just start with minidsp.

Well, REW will allow you to measure the current audio response of your Yamaha. As you analyze the response curve, you can adjust the AVR parametric settings and then re-measure. This iterative settings adjustments and re-measuring process should allow you to achieve a flatter response curve.

I have no idea whether the Yamaha adjustments allow the bass response to be fine-tuned.

for some reason all of my outputs are jacked up. When I try to play a ch4 it plays the left surround and my subs. Every output is wonky. lol

I will have to mess with it more as time allows. I went back through the guide and followed it exactly, or so I thought I did.

That is strange. As far as I know, there is no place in REW to get the channel assignment mixed up. HDMI1=Left front, HDMI2=Right front, etc. You don't have any other signal processor in the audio signal path, do you? I can't see the AVR switching channel assignments, and your computer shouldn't be doing anything either.

I just have the MiniDSP on the subs, other than that nothing else in the chain.

I will have to look at it closer if my kids ever decide to give me a break.

I was coming from an old beta version and the interface where you run measurements from is different. Maybe I’m screwing something up.....most likely.

Use the tone generator, output a 1000Hz tone, and cycle through HDMI1 thru 8. Make sure you are running the current REW beta version. Report your results.

If you type the avr’s IP address and then /setup in your browser it will bring you into a setup menu. From here you can modify the PEQ and just about everything imaginable in your avr. You will need to copy whatever YPAO setting you are using(flat, natural, etc.) into the manual peq slot. From there you can modify. Yamaha limits you to certain frequency bands so it is limited on flexibility.

YPAO has never been known for good sub eq. You can use the eq feature in REW and input those values in the Yamaha peq and see what you get. Mine doesn’t have any sub eq so I’m not sure how limited it is. I think they do limit you to 32hz or something like that but you would need to go into the setup menu to verify. . MiniDSP and REW is the best for dialing in subs especially with a yammy. My opinion of course.

totally fubar'd. Maybe uninstall/reinstall REW and asio4all?

In generator I get below.
Ch1 - R surround
CH2 - L Surround
CH 3 - Front R
CH 4 - Center
CH 5 - Front Right again
CH 6 - Surround L again
Ch7 - Surround L again
Ch8 - Center again

When I run sweeps its different. Ch 2 did front L plus subs. Most of them route to the rear L surround.

No clue what is happening here. I have never heard of a similar issue. Are you on Windows or a Mac?

Some things to try, depending on how determined you are in resolving the issue:

- Try hooking up the PC to a different HDMI port to rule out a port issue.
- Try a different HDMI cable (a long shot).
- Uninstall and re-install the software.
- Try a different PC (to rule out the PC as being the root cause).
- Reset the AVR to factory defaults (don't know whether this is easy or not).

Since this is a HDMI issue, trying a different HDMI port would be the first thing I would try.

I will try that.

I’m not extremely motivated as everything is pretty dialed in. Lol

Edit:

I tried a different hdmi port-same
Different hdmi cable-same
Uninstall/reinstall software-same

Gonna try a avr reset next. I only have one laptop so can’t try another one.

On another note, I think something is up with my AVR. It doesn’t allow me to access the online setup menu. I killed the power to all my audio gear when I was gone over the 4th. Maybe that screwed something up.

Tried AVR reset as well. Still the same. Not sure whats going on.

Thank you!

Great article by forum member @Wayne A. Pflughaupt . I learned a lot from it and still go back to it from time to time for a refresher.

I am stumped. I keep getting the message “the soundcard did not provide any input data, please check that it is connected”

Does anyone know what I need to do to correct this? I keep changing the settings and still get this a lot if not all the time.

My USB is hooked up from the Mac to the umik 1. My HDMI from the Mac is hooked up to one of the 3 HDMI outputs on my NAD.

My preference settings are: output device= display port
Output=default output
Input device=default device or sometimes umik 1 gain 18 dB
Input=default input (L R)

Sometimes it says requesting access to mic and then I get that error message.

Could anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I just want to start making some measurements for my duel subs EQ to go to my MiniDSP 2x4 HD. Can’t even get out of the gate 😞

You need to use the 5.20 beta versions with Mojave.

I tried everything you listed and still the same.

When going through the setup guide I noticed one thing. Under the configuring Windows audio playback devices section it says there should be an HDMI output that will show up automatically as in my attached picture. I have a pic of my screen and I don’t gave that. If I plug the hdmi in and connect it to my avr, then something fills in there, see second attached pic.

Also in REW preferences in the output drop down you have “display audio output 1 1, 1 2, etc. my attached pic is different. Mine says audio output 2.1 1, 2.1 2, etc.

Also a pic of my asio control panel.

Does anything here look wrong? Maybe a setup issue on my laptop?
