Subwoofer connection? High level, Low level, Balanced?

Hi all,

I have an older REL Storm subwoofer and have always fed it via the High Level input.

I'll be moving from my Marantz SR8000 to an SR5009 that has HDMI switching and want to drive the sub for best HT sound. I've always fed this sub from the L/R via the high level input (for great music/stereo sound), but want to feed for best HT surround sound now). How do I go from the RCA sub-woofer output on the receiver into the 3 wire plug on my sub-woofer?

Any wiring schematic / diagram / pointer would be greatly appreciated. Which input and wiring would I need?

I've attached a picture of the back of the sub-woofer below.

Thanks,
AJ

Buy 2 RCA plugs, two lengths of two conductor signal wire, and one XLR male.

Wire the signal carrying leads of from the Left and Right RCA to the pins labled L and R on the Low Level Input.

Combine the ground leads to the 0v pin.

Or, if you can, find a ready made adapter, though it may be difficult to find one with the pinout you need.

I'll be back later...

Looking at the Marantz manual, there is a single RCA for each subwoofer.

So I'm confused how I use 2 RCA's?

Thanks,
AJ

You could just solder two RCA onto the speaker end of the High Level (speaker connection) cable you have now, once you verify wich wire goes where to match the requirements of the low level input.

Wire the single RCA out to both L and R - like a Y cable, with the grounds going to 0v.

Sorry, my brain is wired for stereo.

http://www.manualslib.com/manual/140...ics-Storm.html

"Note:- If only a single phono subwoofer output is available, either use a ”y”
splitter to connect the two phono plugs from the REL or use a single
phono to phono interconnect. This will reduce the volume by 6db."

Sorry, my brain is wired for stereo.

I have no problem wiring something, but I need to understand which wire goes where.

I have on output of Amplifier a single RCA plug (inside / outside) (2 wires)

I have on input to sub-woofer 3 wires that can be plugged into 3 places (High level, Low level and balanced)

Are you saying the inside of the RCA would go to both the Left and Right of the low level input and the outside/shield of the RCA would go to the 0v?

Thanks,
AJ

I think that is what it boils down to, so, YES.

You have one signal source, and want to apply it to both signal inputs at the REL.

My interpretation of the note in the manual, is, that if you connect to only one of the inputs, the REL's output level will be reduced by 6dB.

I'll be back later...

Thanks, that is how I saw it as well and appreciate the confirmation.

Have a great day,
