Question External Hardware Dac feed by computer software player

My question is what is doing what and what do I need to know about the system?

Basis ripped CD's 16/44 Flac files on Nas Drive

Win10 PC using latest version Audirvana my settings are to upscale my Flac files to DSD 256

My external Dac is a SMSL SU8 Dac which can accept up to 512 DSD input

This works great

I am confused as I thought the DAC ( Digital Audio Convertor ) was what did the conversation of the Flac files, yet my software seems to be doing that process, so what is the DAc doing

Question what is the relationship between a software player and an external Dac

Hope someone can clear things up

Thanks

What is should be doing. It is not a digital audio converter, it's a Digital to Analog Converter.
