TV audio output: PCM, Dolby, or DTS?

My AVR doesn't support HDR so I have newer devices (Apple 4K, PS4, UHD Blu-ray) connected directly to my TV. Do I want the audio output (over ARC) to the receiver to be PCM, Dolby Digital, DTS, or DTS NEO 2:5? These are the options that my TV provides.

Thanks for any help and clarification.

What is the model of your tv? What codec does it support over ARC?

also as important if not more so, what audio types does the receiver or soundbar your connecting to support? just don't send the receiver something it can't support and go from there.

It is an Onkyo NR636. It supports Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and whatever else.

The Apple TV 4K lists Dolby Atmos for a lot of what I am watching. I don't know where the wizardry takes place that an audio format is selected that my TV and/or receiver can handle.

This question is better posed in the thread for your display. I'm 99% sure the JS8500 does not support ATMOS over ARC.

I am sure it doesn't. I thought this question was more general and not necessarily TV specific. I just wanted to know which of the options would be best out of what is available.

if your tv doesn't support DD+/ATMOS, then your out of luck, because your receiver can't pass HDR so, to use your ATV4K, you will either have to buy a new tv if you want to connect it directly to the tv so that you can get ATMOS via ARC (also, Sammy's don't support DV, as in none of the Sammy's)

or

you have to buy a new receiver and connect your ATV4K direct to it, again, your current tv won't be able to give you DV if that is of importance to you.

bottom line, if you want to take advantage of your ATV4K, your buying something new. i'd say a new tv that supports DV.

good luck.

The Apple TV 4K is great connected to the TV. I get 4K HDR out of it. I just don't get Atmos and Dolby Vision as you noted.

I was going to get a Q90 until I noticed that it lacked Dolby Vision. I don't want an OLED as we watch a lot of local news and shows with logos. I am going to wait and see what the 2020 sets offer.
