Samsung smart TV optical out is distorted

Scenario 1 :Samsung Smart TV - optical out to Topping D30 DAC, I get distorted sound.

Scenario 2: Laptop optical out to Topping D30 DAC and it works, everything is the same except for source

Scenario 3: Samsung smart TV to a Bose system with its own cable and DAC to the smart TV and it works

Scenario 3: Samsung smart TV to a Bose optical cable to Topping D30 DAC and I get distorted sound

So why is the Smart TV not working with the Topping DAC ?

What type of cable is this in scenario 3? Is it an optical cable or an analog cable?

Sounds like the optical output of the TV is clipping the input of your DAC. There may be settings either in the TV or the DAC that can help, if not there's not much you can do. I doubt using a different optical cable will make any difference but they're cheap so its worth a try.

Kind of a "is it plugged in?" question. Is the TV outputting PCM?

Make me grow brainiac fingers, but with more hair!

You haven't told us the model number but here's a quote from a 2019 owner's manual regarding its optical out, p29:

"Digital audio is only available with 5.1 channel broadcasts."

This would suggest to me there is, in at least in some scenarios, a Dolby option, i.e. not PCM, which the Topping won't work with and will likely cause distortion.

Makes sense why the Bose works, The BOSE is 5.1
