TV Streaming Apps & Surround Sound [Faux?] vs. Stereo

Hey all,

So I'm running a Sony android-based TV and had a curious question about various apps and how they're outputting sound through my Marantz receiver. Because I'm really confused.

Let's say I'm comparing some apps, each on AppleTV, and then using the built in Android app on the TV through ARC:

Netflix:
- Always 5.1 (or Atmos) for sources that support it on both AppleTV and using the built-in TV app; there's no issue here.

YouTube:
- Using the TV app, it outputs 5.1
- Using AppleTV, it outputs 2 channel stereo
- From the research I've done, YouTube does *NOT* support surround sound natively, so does this mean the TV is upmixing it to faux 5.1?

Funimation:
- Using the TV app, it outputs 5.1
- Using AppleTV, it outputs 2 channel stereo
- Again, from the research I've done, Funimation does *NOT* support surround sound, so does this mean the TV is upmixing it to faux 5.1?

I noticed changing a setting in the TV (Auto 2 instead of Auto 1 for "Digital audio out") makes it behave like the AppleTV; things like Netflix still output 5.1, but YouTube, Funimation, etc. output Stereo.

So I guess I'm trying to figure out which is "purer". Even though 5.1 is of course usually desirable, if it's faux 5.1 when it's supposed to be Stereo, maybe it's just better to listen to the Stereo in that case?

Thanks for any feedback.
