Hey everyone. I've been lightly lurking for a few years. Basically, almost every Google search about various topics I was inquiring about landed me here at AVS Forum. I've been doing quite a bit of reading, but I decided that it's now time for me to pester all of you once and for all!
I picked up the hifi and home theater bug from my late father. We never had the means to do a good system at the house, but he'd always be a nut about great speakers and sound whenever we had the chance. He'd pick movie theaters based on sound, rather than the size of the screen or quality of the seats. He'd even talk other people with nice stereos into hosting parties - hilarious! He's the one who taught me how to hook up stereo equipment when I was just a little kid. I have many memories of messing around with cheap speakers with my dad, seeing what kind of crazy setups we could do in my room with a Kenwood receiver, questionable speaker wire, and random speakers we'd found in garage sales. I also distinctly remember going to Best Buy with me dad and seeing the infamous Bose demo where they cover the tiny satellite speakers with the giant fake cabinets; he said "the surround sound is fun, but the speakers only sound okay," then they removed the covers and he said "WHAT?! I gotta have this." Say what you want about Bose, but that was a funny memory!
So now I'm in a way later stage in life. My father isn't around to enjoy this stuff anymore, but I'm lucky to have a wife that is also a musician, like me, and also loves a great sounding setup. We currently have a very humble, low budget, 3.1 setup, but we love it and take pride in what we've got. The combination of things going well lately *and* some of our equipment starting to fail is motivating us to make a pretty major upgrade to our audio setup, so I started deep-diving and reading everything I could. I ended up reading tons of threads here, naturally, so here I am.
This is a great community and I'm happy to finally start participating in it.
