I don't know if the other posts with higher $$ spent make me feel better or worse. but for the current theater (well in a few months) will be 12,000 for the audio and visuals not including any seating or room décor or movies. Most of this is either high end DIY builds or bought used after somebody upgraded after a year or two to save money. I mean a 1 year old projector with low hours half off of $6000. Is the single most expensive item I have in the theater. all speakers are DIY which makes my $12,000 systems especially with dirac live sound like $25,000 or more.

I have added Klipsch RC-64 lll and two pair of Klipsch RP-600 bookshelf speakers for surrounds and I am well over $10K into the current system not including all the movies over different formats. And not including the past gear I have had since I first got into this hobby. Also not even getting into the albums and cd's I have purchased. All that and I do not have projection in my home theater that is not in a dedicated room.

HT System: Marantz SR-8012 Receiver, Emotiva XPA-3 Amplifier, Sony XBR55A9F 55"OLED 4K TV, Panasonic DP-UB9000 4K UHD Blu-ray Player, 4K Apple TV 64GB, Speakers: Altec Lancing A-7's (L&R), Klipsch RC-64 lll center channel, Klipsch RP-600M surround speakers, Advent Marbles, HSU VTF-3 MK5HP subwoofer. AudioQuest cables, Pangea Audio speaker stands, Harmony Elite Remote.

Wow, how much? 15 years ago I auditioned a top of the line Runco CRT/Levinson/Revel system. Just the gear was $150K, installation was additional. It was grand in its way and I nearly pulled the trigger. What stopped me was the knowledge that home theater was and is an emerging art. There are great benefits to frequent upgrades as new standards and new equipment become available and philosophies of design and presentation change. Dropping a $150K nugget would have locked me in for decades. The wife is acutely aware of large expenditures. That's what I get for marrying a smart woman.

So I went another way -- I set a cap of $10K and decided to see what I could do within that limit. The fancy screen was the first to go -- a nicely painted white wall saved thousands. Denon AVR instead of separates. Paradigm speakers -- the 7.1 set cost $6K. I poached a data projector from work, a Viewsonic. And a generic blu ray player. Not impressive by today's standards but projector tech was already in flux so the very recent at the time Viewsonic gave the Runco a good run. I wired the rig myself, drilled holes, mounted speakers, etc..

So I got started for less than the sales tax on the Runco/Levinson setup.

Fast forward 15 years -- the white wall is now a DIY 168" diagonal 2.40:1 CIH screen. The Viewsonic gave way to a 720p Panasonic, an early 1080p Sony and most recently a JVC RS540 faux 4K. The generic blu ray has been replaced by a series of Oppo players and I use a Roku for streaming. The Paradigms were the most expensive part of the original set up -- speaker tech isn't advancing at the pace projectors and other tech do. I didn't mind putting money there.

So $10K with many tweaks, haggles and improvisations. Graduating to the JVC has been transcendent. The room itself is spartan, two chairs and footstools not included in the $10K. I use a Maglite flashlight to navigate the dark room. No money is spent that can't be seen or heard in improved PQ and/or SQ. Retired equipment is either given away or sold, its cost is deducted from the $10K and replacement costs are added back in.

I know, all of this is silly for an adult. Back in college when there was no money scrounging was a necessity. But I enjoy the game and keeps my wife from objecting like she would if I posted a six figure expense. If I had bought that Runco/Levinson rig I would still be watching it in all its antique glory.

Looking forward -- ATMOS will require a new AVR and speakers -- the $10K barrier will no longer hold, but I will not think of that while still in the glow of the new JVC projector. And in reality that $10K should be bumped to $15K adjusting for inflation, but I'll never convince my wife of that.

Too much with just spending another $7k to upgrade my 5.2 setup and the projector. Have another 4-8k to spend expanding but the quality equipment definitely makes movies and games so much more fun and immersive. All in all I'll be between 17 and 20k when complete.

Definitive CLR2002 center - $70
PSB Image S5 surrounds - $180

I must have about $6000 in mine. Mostly diy. Haven't been to a movie theater in 15 years. Payed for itself many times over.

Not one red cent.

But counting my latest upgrade, I've probably spent at least $30K over the last decade or so, now.

I will post pics soon. Still need to install carpet (it was supposed to happen last Friday), finalize my rack and the recessed lights in the room, touch up everything, still waiting to receive my corner traps and the last thing is the 2 x 1" linacoustics covering the front wall.

I'm prob another 10 days or so away from being ready once i'm back in town.
