HT of the Month: The Bradley Cinema

This home theater was built almost entirely by its owner, as revealed in our first-ever video presentation of Home Theater of the Month.

Brad Horstkotte likes to build things. As an accomplished woodworker, he enjoys making electric guitars of his own fanciful designs, and he did not hesitate to build an entire home theater in one half of a four-car garage behind his house in Los Angeles, CA. Not only did he finish the room by himself after contractors installed the basic framing, he also built the front speakers and subwoofers. Talk about DIY!

I visited Brad in his home theater to talk about the process and check out the result, which is mighty impressive. Here's my interview with Brad, along with images from the build and the finished room:

Clearly, Brad is a man on a mission to build a high-performance home theater with his own hands, and he has succeeded beautifully. Now, his biggest challenge is tearing himself away to go to work each morning—which is made possible, no doubt, by the knowledge that he will return in the evening to enjoy more movies in his masterpiece build.

For much more detail about how Brad's home theater came together, check out the build thread here.

If you'd like your home theater considered for HT of the Month, PM me with the details and a link to your build thread if available.

Guys, doing the video is great. I know you can't fly/drive Scott around each month but he really knows how to talk to people.

Congrats Brad! Having been in the room when it was just drywall and watching it progress to a completed theatre, you definitely deserve HTOM. Impressive work!

I enjoyed the video approach, which was a fun change from just a bunch of photos. However the background music was too loud and after about the two minutes of it repeating over and over, it started to be really annoying.

Woohoo! Congrats, Brad. It's nice to see your room all finished up like. Came out great! Congratulations on making the AVS HTotM.

@Scott Wilkinson love the new format with the video interview! I'd suggest you should always do this but I think it's easier for you to make it to these So-Cal places to film and not so much in other reaches of the country. But if you can, this is a fun new format that I hope you can continue to do. Well done, sir.

Congrats on HTOM, nothing like a good DIY build. I love the fabric walls.

However, your screen ratio 2.125:1, is definitely unconventional but thats cool.

Thanks Scott!

And thanks all for the kind comments, as mentioned in the video there's still stuff to do (the rack is a mess), but I think that's always the case - especially when you have a short attention span and a lot of hobbies (back to guitar building lately).

No immediate plans, but I do have two more of the matching surrounds that are just sitting around that I could deploy when I get around to it. I'll fix the rack and replace the HTPC first I think.

Kudos Brad, I've seen your posts all over AVS for years.
Now I know how to properly pronounce your last name.
side bar: I also had a Harmony 880, it died so I found a 890 and still using that.

So now Scott get's to travel the USA (North America, the world?) to interview and video HToM's?
How'd you sell management on that one?

I wish! I'll be looking for opportunities to do this sort of HToM when I'm in various cities for trade shows etc. For example, I'm going to do one in Dallas next month right after CEDIA, and I have another one lined up in Los Angeles, where I live, so stay tuned for those! In other months, I'll do HToM as I have in the past, with photos and a writeup. But who knows—if these first ones are very popular, perhaps the powers that be will see the value in flying me around to do more of them.

I second mtbdudex comments; good to meet the man behind the posts.
Great job on the theater and good to see some almost completion shots on your build thread. I share your opinion on screen ratio: constant area is the way to go.
Must be nice living in the South. If I went detached, shoveling snow would be part of the "theater experience" 4 months of the year.

Scott: Like everyone else, video interviews get my thumbs up, but would be nice to see a couple more professional photos as well. Brad's a natural in front of the camera by the way. Cool!

Scott, keep me honest here....To my knowledge, I think Scott simply lifts the pics from the HToM's build thread. Sometimes he may request a certain angle or closeup or something which may not already be in the build thread, in which case the owner would just snap it and email it to Scott.

I'd love to have some Pro pics on my HT, but at present it's not worth the cost to just have them.

Awesome work Brad! Congrats!

Yes...

The video approach is a nice fun change. I think it works great as an interview tool, it's more personable, for room layout though I happen to find diagrams and pictures easier to reference as a written document than embedded in a video.

Yes, the off axis response on Scott's mic was poor, every time he turned his head to talk there was a dip in response. If the mic isn't an omni you can use one for field recording just fine and that may help, with a lapel mic you can also turn with your body and not your head so the mic stays on axis or use a Countryman or Countryman like boom mic.

Great system, sweet room.

A more general question, for additional sound proofing, has anyone considered making the interior walls out of 5/8" plywood instead of Plaster Board? I keep rattling this around in my mind, but have never gotten any feedback on whether it would work.

I'm jealous!!!

One thing I forgot to mention that's a major todo on my list - add an A/C unit!

We happened to pick a pretty hot day, and did the filming around midday, so it got pretty hot in there after a while - fortunately, our videographer brought fancy LED lighting (vs. halogen or whatever heat lamps), so it was manageable, but just in case my head looked particularly shiny - makeup!

Thanks again guys for all the nice feedback, and for not rubbing my nose in the more obvious shortcomings (rack *cough*) - but feel free to make any suggestions on what you'd do differently / suggest for improvement

dnoonie,
Don't forget that pics and more detailed information can usually be found in folks build thread.

Brad, I'll certainly be checking out your build thread when I get a chance. I just spent 2 and a half months redoing my theater room, no where near what you did, but I'm already planing the next changes. I keep reminding myself to enjoy what I have!
