Home Theater of the Month - Submit Your Entry!

Do you have an exceptional home theater? Share it with AVS Forum and it could be featured as the AVS Forum Home Theater of the Month. How? It's simple: To send a submission you can leave a post here, or you can email [email protected] (make sure the subject is "Home Theater of the Month Submission").

Each month one of the entries will be featured as an article on the AVS Forum homepage and in the newsletter!

In order to be considered, your submission needs to include several pictures of the room, a list of the gear, plus a short description of how and why you put it together. Bonus points if you have an existing "build thread" for your room that already contains this info.

If a theater is chosen as Home Theater of the Month, we'll do a follow-up via email or PM.

Although the focus of Home Theater of the Month has been on fully dedicated rooms, if you have a living room or media room that completely and convincingly converts into a home theater (controlled lighting, surround-sound, properly located seating, etc.) I'm open to considering it—especially if the room is based around a large, high-performance 4K or 8K TV!

When I started Home Theater of the Month six years ago, 1080p plasma TVs were still the flagship models. 4K and affordable 75" FALD LCD, not to mention something like a 77" OLED, were still a dream. Now, 4K projection is affordable and TVs have evolved into high-performance HDR displays. It's a whole different ballgame but certain aspects remain the same: The sound needs to be profound, the picture needs to be big and beautiful, and the room needs to be all about putting you into the movie (or video game).

So, let's see what you've got. Remember to post your entry here, or else email submissions to [email protected], or else you can PM me here on the site via my profile.

Scott told me that mine wouldn't work due to the low resolution construction photos.

Show me an example image, I'm pretty handy with Photoshop. Plus that does not disqualify anyone for me, especially if there's a high-quality photo of the current, finished result.

imagic 07-11-2019 07:39 AM

So far so good!

I'm pretty sure your "low" resolution is everyone else's "high" resolution Art. :D

And finally some one sitting close enough to actually get a cinematic experience from a TV.... But perhaps too close? I sit 1.5m from my 55" OLED and it looks phenomenal. @ 65" I'd probably want to sit 1.8m from the screen. I guess it doesn't matter and becomes just immersive when the content is all 4K anyways. I've watched several 4K titles and actually wanted to move closer than 1.5 to my 55" :)

But love your setup up! I'm moving to a different apartment where my room will be just 15m^2 living room / bedroom so I'll try and making something similar!

AVS should do a stereo system of the month.. @imagic

I agree. I was doing "sound system of the week" for a bit, but weekly was too much. Monthly could be fun, we'll see.

Hah, thanks :)

Everyone when they first see it is like "woooah! it's huge!" but you very quickly get used to it

tbh I've had no problems with sharpness, even 720p looks good, madVR might have something to do with it. But yeah, 4K looks incredible at that distance :D
Hell if they weren't so expensive I'd try squeeze a 77" OLED in there...

Haha oh wow.

My biggest fear about moving apartments is if the distance between my display and sitting area is greater than 2 metres. I definitely don't want to sit any further than 1.8m from a 55" and max 2.1m from a 65"... 1.5m gotta be hella crazy, but I love it. The immersion must be immense.

Looks very cosy too. I might model my room after this :D:D

Yes, very cozy indeed, extremely easy to fall asleep in! Because it's OLED, when the screen goes black, you can't see your hand in front of your face :D

These are on the back wall and side wall painted black.

These are on the ceiling covered in velvet.

Murbella7 07-14-2019 08:02 PM

Mr. Callas, seriously? Why would you need floor rumblers under the seats? Those subs will be felt 3 blocks away.
Mr. Arrow... OMG. HUGE. I suppose your living space is next door. I presume normal admission prices will apply, yes?

That's a really nice find. It looks like they also offer a version molded in black plastic, but it's $25 more. How did you attach them to the wall?

How effective are they at sound diffusion? If these work, they'd be some of the cheapest pre-made solutions I've ever seen.

474 Attachment(s)
@Murbella7 - The entire theater is floating floor and I have six 18” subs, but the inexpensive BOSS platform is infinitely better at providing tactile effects, and it’s super efficient.

@srw1000 - I used T pins to stick black foam board against the drywall, about 1/4” bigger in each dimension, then I used black silicone caulk to stick the pvc panels to the board. The extra $25 might be worth it if the black is dark enough, because these were a pain to paint. It took like 4 coats....they are so smooth the paint didn’t want to stick.

My room sounds great, but I don’t have anyway to specifically measure the effects of these. They are significantly less expensive than even the cheapest purpose made diffusion panels I could find, and better looking imo. The ones I used on the ceiling are more aggressive.

Thank you so much for posting this. I added the black angular panels to my Amazon cart last night, just to save them.

Then, just by happenstance, I checked my cart today and saw that they were one of the items that is a special Prime deal, and so they're roughly the same price as the white ones. What incredible timing.

I bought three packs to use throughout my theater room. Heck, a box of 12 is about the same price as an actual acoustic panel, so it doesn't seem like there's much to loose.

Thanks again,

Scott

SteveCallas 07-15-2019 08:04 PM

Yeah that is good timing - take pics when it’s done.

Check post #203 in my build thread if you want to see pics of the black board and panels.

TMcG 07-17-2019 01:07 PM

I think it's high time @BrolicBeast had recognition for his phenomenal theater, the Beast, Unleashed!

@imagic - As a suggestion...perhaps there needs to be separate recognitions. HTOM for the hobbyist / DIY theater and perhaps a HTOQ for the full-on professionally designed and constructed theaters like Erskine, Nigel, etc. featured once per quarter. Just a thought.

Looking forward to having this feature come back to AVS!!!
