This is excellent. That Elite has such a cold look overall that it's surprising Harmony doesn't put some kind of background on by default. I just added a dark blue sky star pattern and it makes the remote looks so much nicer. I assume you are joking about more battery use. I have used backgrounds on all my old Harmony remotes (880's and such), not sure why it didn't occur to me to use it on the elite.

Nice choice!

Dunno yet about the battery life - all I know is that it's already a reviewed weakness, and someone above suggested a custom background makes things worse.

Thus far I've had to recharge after 4 days (lots of syncing during setup) and 5 days (more 'normal' use, but still some tweaking/syncing). If the battery continues to fall somewhere in there I'll probably leave the custom background on mine. Will report back

Duncan

EDIT: Oh... what everyone else just before me said . Guess a background is just fine - yay!

battery life is awful. The entire remote is awful. I regret getting it. 890 RF was far better. Better range, better layout, more responsive, better.

no. it's actually an excellent remote. layout is fine, range works well in 95% of applications, is plenty responsive. I get 3-4 days out of the remote, then I again, I don't stare at the tv 24 hours a day and put the remote down once in awhile.

sell it on ebay/craigslist/whatever.

Are there any dimmers (switches or bulbs) that integrate with the Harmony Elite (with Hub)? I would like to be able to hit "Play Blu Ray" and Projector Powers on, Receiver Powers on, Blu Ray Player powers on, Lights dim to off - is that possible on the cheap?

Thanks

I'm not sure it would qualify as "on the cheap" but just recently when I completed the final build out phase of my home theater I added lighting automation. I used a combination of z-wave and ZigBee dimmer switches and a SmartThings hub. Using my Harmony Elite I now can do exactly what you described, and a bit more. It takes some time to figure out how to get it all to work but it can definitely be done.

If you are interested PM me and I can share details.

If you have only one set of lights to control and have line-of-site from the hub to the light switch, a Lutron Maestro IR dimmer will do that for $30. I've been using it for a decade or so to control overhead lighting in a projector room with no issues with a Harmony 880, Harmony One, and now an Elite -> https://www.homedepot.com/p/Lutron-M...R-WH/203489683

You check the compatibility of any device here:

For sure, Lutron Caseta and Philips Hue lights are compatible. For some reason, Lutron Radio RA2 (which I have) is not.

I guess I don't understand why people just don't put the remote back in the charging cradle when done?
and for people wanting to use other emitters like i do that are 3.5mm, i recommend these:

Not true, that’s an old wives tale carried over from NiCad batteries. These are LI batteries and the charger switches off when they are charged.

^^ The point was to use up all the power of the battery before charging, not that the charger switch off when battery is full. This still holds true for Li batts.

No, this is still bunk.

Just leave the damn remotes in the charger like they're designed to be. Added benefit of always knowing where your remote is, too. None of my Harmony remotes (going back to the One in 2008) have battery life issues.

BTW - I bought one of these in black and am going to try in out in my new HT room. It may be a month before I get in installed and set up but it should work fine! Thank you!

Okay, I stand corrected. For Li batteries they recommend keeping it charged and after every so many cycles to drain it completely. There is a lot of research into this now.

Actually, optimal management for ANY rechargeable is to be maintained between 40% and 80% SOC, and never completely discharging. Draining a rechargeable completely is the worst thing you can do to it.

I've actually seen on the new Li-Ion batteries that smaller, more frequent charges are better since there isn't as much heat buildup during the charge.

Or at least compared to a 0 - 100 charging situation.

My remote is rarely used. woman rather use the LG wand for her Netflix, and we use the TV maybe 3-4 hrs a day tops. But thanks for the assumptions. My 890 would last a lot longer.

Just recharged a third time last night. That's a six-day cycle whilst sporting a non-custom background with only a few sync sessions in there (one a 'big' sync to a new even flashier non-custom background). So, no big surprise, people around here know what they're talking about ! I'll definitely be sticking with my funky cosmic nebula background going forward then...

I've owned the Harmony 950 for about a month now, could someone please tell me where/how to use the HELP feature on this remote. All the old Harmony remotes I've owned had the hard button but I can't seem to find it anywhere on the 950. Sure would keep me from answering phone calls all day from my kids trying to figure out what they did wrong by not pointing the remote towards the front of the room. Thanks in advance.

I'm not trying to upsell you, but that's where the "hub" comes in handy. The hub (and external IR blasters if you need them) is/are always pointed correctly. It takes a few months before you actually break the habit of pointing the remote , but you no longer need to once you have the hub (and everything works a lot more reliably and consistently).

are you not using the hub for IR? the remote doesn't need to point at anything unless you've specifically told it to be the IR source.

I have just the basic Harmony 950, not the Harmony Elite which comes with the hub. Thinking I should go pick one up though, the hub that is!

I just picked up a Harmony Elite.

Any suggestions on where to put the hub and the 2 little IR thingys? I have all my equipment racked.
