Harmony Express Released

Logitech on Tuesday announced the Harmony Express, a new universal remote that features the Alexa voice assistant.

Quote:
Amazon’s increasingly ubiquitous helper comes built into the device and is accessible via a large circular button at the top of the remote. The idea with the Harmony Express is to use Alexa to control the various devices in your home theater. Past Logitech Harmony remotes have been usable with an associated Alexa skill for those with separate Echo devices, but here the voice controls are baked in.

The Harmony Express costs $250 and is available starting Tuesday.
Some home automation folks have already gone down this road. Cool to see an official product release from Logitech. I haven't jumped on the Alexa train, but this might be worth a shot.

I think I will keep my Elite and still get to use Alexa with it.

Maybe I am old school, but I am not seeing the value here.

I have the new Harmony Express on the way from a free tech program. Im assuming this isnt released yet, as I dont see it for sale on any websites only a blog on Logitechs site.

Guess Ill give it a go, and see if itll be a worthy replacement of my tried and true 890 in my MBR! Ive been using my 890 longer than Ive had my 10 yr old son, lol... Cant hurt for free!

I would expect the next version to be a hybrid of the Elite with Express functionality.

Yeah, not sure how much Im going to like asking Alexa to turn on tv functions, my wife may like it. I have multiple Google Assistants in my home, and love theyre functionality!

If not, Ill just go back to my 890, that I have no problems with controlling my gear in the MBR walk in.

Wow, what a waste of money. I don't know what happened to harmony years back but they've lost the entire idea of what a remote should be. My OLED LG TV remote is better than that.

Me either. My elite works with and without Alexa, so I'm not seeing what value this remote adds. Seems like they figured they had to jump on the voice control bandwagon.

Arrived today, no ir sensor on the remote itself, dont work for my setup. No ir on the remote to controll my TV, hub is in the walk-in, fail imo... Tv wall mounted in my mbr, gear in walk-in closet.

Back to the 890 Harmony!

Sounds like a 100% voice controlled remote. I don't know why they just didn't make a new remote with all the features of a Harmony Elite, but just add voice control to it so you can use it as IR remote with the Hub or through voice control.

It has voice controll, and bluetooth, with a mini hub, that connects to a standard size hub like previous Harmony hub via a 3.5 connector. The main hub is powered by a ac to micro usb cable, and has a small white led to let you know its sending/recieving commands.

It works fine controlling my wall mounted tv when my closet door is open. But when the door is closed, the tv cant be controlled(only my Shield TV and bluray player can be controlled then). I need to pickup a 6ft 3.5mm cable extention to mount the mini hub(size of a silver dollar round, by 1/2" thick) under my tv to solve the issue.

The express app can be used to locate the remote, plus its how you setup and tell the remote what components are in your system. I just dont know im a big fan of voice controlling my setup in the mbr!

Express hub pictured ontop of switch.

After pickup up a 3.5mm female to male 12ft extension cable on Amazon. I got this remote setup working nicely.

I ran the 12ft 3.5mm extension cable in wall from the express main hub in my walkin to the mini hub. I mounted the mini hub using 3m double sided tape to the back of my wall mounted tv, at the lowest point next to the ir sensor!

Now the express is working like it should, controlling everything as it should. I included a pic of the mini hub on the back of my tv.
