Less is better - Universal Remote for Streaming (One wand to rule them all!)

I have a whole drawer full of remotes, just like most of the rest of you, including a Harmony 650. Now that I have cut the cord and have gone all-in with streaming, it is all overkill. It is too much.

My streaming is controlled with a Roku Ultra box, which comes with this very handy remote:

In this new world of streaming, even this probably has too many buttons, as the four advertising buttons (Netflix, Hulu, Sling and Showtime) are not necessary. The A and B buttons at the bottom also serve no purpose that I am aware of.

That being said, this is a damn good remote and very close to what I am looking for. However,

1. It does not control the audio from the AVR,
2. It does not turn the AVR on and off when I turn the TV and the Roku on and off, and
3. It does not have a mute button, which I like to use frequently.
Is there a small wand remote that basically does what the Roku remote does, in a small form factor, but with the three features I noted above included?

This would be the ultimate remote. Less is better. One wand to rule them all. We are not trying to remote pilot the star ship Enterprise, after all.

Take a look at the one-for-all urc-7935 streamer remote, its a one device renote can control three devices, tv, sound bar/avr, and streamer. Different sections are for different devices. Cursor pad works with streamer, but if you press the tv input key nd you have drop down menu on your tv, cursor pad will switch to controlling tv.

Many open box on ebay for $10:

I posted a photo to compare roku remote with 7935 here, wait for it to show up:

Thanks for your posts. That is just the sort of information that I am looking for.

With regards to the replacement Roku remotes that you are referring to, can they be programmed to control audio from an AVR and also to turn the AVR on and off when the TV and Roku is turned on and off?

No, not via IR, perhaps using hdmi CEC. Also the ofa 7935 remote is a learning remote so you can teach direct access labelled keys anything you wish.

Edmund,

Thank you for alerting us of this remote. I bought one from eBay ($10) in the hope of providing an easy solution for my wife to watch Netflix or Amazon Video or Hulu on her Roku Premiere Plus in her den, without me having to be present to switch her Panny GT50 TV from Cable mode to Streaming mode. She can't seem to grasp/remember how to switch inputs or use the activities i've set up on her beloved MX-500 even though i have simple Macros on it to go back and forth, and she refuses to use the MX-890 i set up for the den which is even easier, nor will she use her MX-800 to just switch to the Roku's input then pick up the Roku remote and just use that to watch Netflix.

But i got her to use this URC-7935 and she likes it as it has all the buttons she needs to just watch Netflix without having to juggle remotes. The handy TV INPUT Key makes this a better solution for her than any of the various versions of the OEM Roku remotes. It's easy for her just pick it up and use it to turn the TV on, then simply press the Input key and toggle from CABLE to ROKU and just use the 7935 for her streaming session (i have the all the TV's input labels named since he doesn't want to see HDMI-1 and HDMI-3 LOL).

The past few nights i've actually been using it for Netflix instead of my usual MX-890 (which she refuses to use for some unknown reason) and it is indeed a great remote for someone who has an external streaming device connected to their TV. I like the tactile feel of the buttons too.

I've ordered a 2nd one to give to my stepson's wife who has exactly the same problems with switching between their Cable DVR and their Apple TV Streamer box on their Panasonic Plasma w/Soundbar setup in their family room. She and her hubby both hate the tiny size and the crappy ergonomics of the little flat Apple remote with the tiny little navigation so i think they'll like this unit.

Great to hear, I like how the cursor pad switches from one device to other and back. So if you program it for Apple tv cursor pad works the apple tv, but when you press tv input key and menu drops down the cursor pad now works the tv, until menu disappears, and then its back controlling the apple tv. You can change the color of the light round the cursor pad if you wish. When programmed for apple tv the netflix keys and others don't work like do on roku's, I taught discrete input commands for my hdmi switcher.

Also keep in mind this is a JP1 remote, so you can literally load any codes known to man and do some cool customizations of the light ring. I got several a while back that I'm programming and giving as gifts to some family members.

Can a single device JP1 remote be programmed to control multiple devices? (I know there are quite a few out there that are one device made by URC or oneforall) ..
I need to control tv, avr, and appletv tv.

That's not a JP1 remote. No programming possibilities whatsoever.

Does it have a 6-pin connector in the battery bay? If so, it's new to us and currently unsupported. If it does have a connector and we were to make an RDF for it, it's most likely just a single device remote. If you want us to build an RDF, get a JP1 cable, download Remote Master and post your raw download in the forums at hifi-remote.com.

For that $32 you could have gotten an 8 device JP1 remote like the Inteset INT-422 that would definitely control all your devices. But I don't think there's much that can be done with your remote.

It does have the 6 pin and I got it as a replacement for my Vizio before I even knew about jp1. While changing the batteries, I noticed the 6 pins, got curious, googled what they were for and discovered the wonderful world of jp1. I was just wondering if I could program it for controlling other devices since I own it already, that’s all. Sounds like it would be a fun project...

AFAIC, that lame remote is just that. It doesn't do anything.
What, you never adjust your audio or video settings at all for any program from any source? Every program is adjusted properly and there is no need to 'tweak' any settings including volume?

Recording free OTA TV for 'time shifting' has been here since 1975. Will there be DVR's to do the same when ATSC3 obsoletes existing DVR's??

My new Roku Ultra remote has TV power, volume ,mute and an earphone plug. It’s awesome. Makes my Harmony 676 look like an antique car. 1 & 2 buttons are for added shortcuts in our case Disney+ & Amazon. Based on using the new remote I’m considering getting. 75” TCL Roku TV.

That remote is programmable.. it’s better to research before mouthing off.

I was just wondering if I can program it for activities. I can program various buttons for different functions of individual remotes. Most oneforall replacement remotes come preprogrammed for specific brands, (in my case vizio) but they are JP 1 compatible and they have the ability to learn different IR keys.

The numbers of buttons (or lack of) on that remote automatically limits it's usefulness starting with a Menu & numeric keypad buttons.
I never stated anything about programing anything.
