I think you can consider getting a 2.1 soundbar. You mentioned the environment you have for the space is not ideal for good sound and you have a dedicated HT for movies. key factors: clear dialog, better than Tv bass, and wider soundstage.

    My recommendations:
Samsung HW-N850/ZA (premium with Dolby Atmos audio)
Samsung HW-N650 (simpler with bass and clear dialog)
Sony HT-Z9F sounds pretty decent too and smaller footprint
Nakamichi plus 5.2 if bass is your thing. this system comes with dual subs and decently wide front soundstage.

    Micarina,

I am purchasing a 75" QLED. It will sit on a console that sits on the floor of a cabinet. In the old days a rear projection TV sat in the space without a console. There are columns on each side of the cabinet that extend about 2" forward which concerns me as it may block some of the surround sound. I may have to to push the TV back a few inches and the TV will not have a built in look or I could put the sound bar in the console below the TV though the sound would be below ear level.

The family room is open to a kitchen and there is a sitting area on one side of the viewing area and a bar on the other. The floors are stone so I don't think great sound is possible in such a large space. We use this TV mostly for sports, news, and light viewing. I don't want this TV to be too loud. We have a dedicated HT for movies.

What sound bars should I consider? Simplicity is desired, especially something that pairs well with a Samsung.
