There’s a raft of new Philips LCD TVs at CES 2018, brought to you by P&F USA, the exclusive North American license partner for Philips consumer TVs and home-video products. All have 4K/UHD resolution and high dynamic-range capabilities.
All but the entry-level Philips LCD TVs provide NetTV+, the latest iteration of the company’s smart-TV platform. New this year are Hulu and the NetTV+ App Store, which join Netflix, YouTube, Vudu, and Pandora. Also available are the Hotlist and Zumo app portals that provide free access to over 100 channels of streaming content from such networks as Bloomberg, CBS News, Time, Conde Nast Entertainment, BuzzFeed, PopSugar, and more. It also provides a full web browser.
Another feature common to all the 2018 Philips LCD TVs is premium sound from Sonic Emotion. This technology expands the soundstage way beyond the confines of the speakers themselves. I’ve heard it used in soundbars, and it’s quite impressive.
At the top of the new line of Philips LCD TVs is the 69 Series, which offers Dolby Vision as well as HDR10 capabilities with a wide color gamut that covers 75% of the BT.2020 gamut. A backlight technology called BrightPro 2 boosts brighter areas of the image to increase the contrast even more—in this case, by 30% to maintain the wide color gamut. The 69 Series will be available in 50″, 55″, and 65″ screen sizes when it hits the shelves in April. No pricing has been announced yet.
Stepping down to the 59 Series, it offers most of the same functionality as the 69 Series, including Dolby Vision. It uses BrightPro backlight technology, which boosts the bright areas of the image by up to twice as much as conventional backlights. The 59 Series will also be available in April in 43″, 50″, 55″, 65″, and 75″ sizes. Pricing has not yet been revealed.
The entry-level 57 Series omits the NetTV+ functionality but retains the other features found in the 59 Series. Five screen sizes will be available in April, but they were not included in the press release. And of course, pricing was not revealed.
