Prices Announced on New Sony Master Series TVs, Pre-Orders Begin

Sony Master Series TVs

Just a few short weeks ago, Sony unveiled its new Master Series TVs in Manhattan. Now, at the IFA 2018 show in germany, Sony has announced imminent U.S. availability and pricing.

Sony’s Master Series includes two new models: the A9F OLED and Z9F LED-LCD. These feature Sony’s next-generation Picture Processor X1 Ultimate, which  “intelligently detects and analyzes each object in the picture through Sony’s new Object-based Super Resolution.”

As of today, you can preorder the Master Series from Amazon or Best Buy at the following prices:

Sony Master Series XBR-55A9F 55” class (54.6” diag) 4K OLED HDR TV, $3,999.99

Sony Master Series XBR-65A9F 65” class (64.5” diag) 4K OLED HDR TV, $5,499.99

Sony Master Series XBR-65Z9F 65” class (64.5” diag) 4K FALD/LCD HDR TV, $3,499.99

Sony Master Series XBR-75Z9F 75” class (74.5” diag) 4K FALD/LCD HDR TV, $5,999.99

At the press event in NYC, I was impressed with the performance of these new TVs. Regarding the OLED, I noted that “picture-wise, my eyes were most impressed with how the Sony handled ultra-deep shadows.”

As for the FALD/LCD models, I said “To my eyes, one of the best demos showing improvement in LCD display technology was the impact of the X1 Ultimate processor and X-Motion Clarity. Sony’s technology allows the TV to strobe specific zones in the FALD array instead of “blinking” the whole screen. This improved the rendition of motion without the penalty in brightness that is usually associated with black-frame insertion or strobing.”

Something to look out for as these TVs start to ship is that Sony has promised dramatic improvements in screen uniformity as a result of a factory calibration. If they deliver what Sony hinted at during the press conference, it’ll be quite significant because AV enthusiasts who are picky live in fear of getting a “bad panel” when shopping for a pricey premium TV. If Sony’s factory uniformity calibration works as advertised, it will be an advantage that competitors cannot yet match.
