With its just-announced Xperia XZ Premium, Sony brings full 4K UHD resolution with HDR to a smartphone for the first time. The 4K display measures 5.5 inches and offers full 3840 x 2160 resolution UHD, meaning that you’d need superhuman vision to ever see a pixel. But with support for HDR and the increased contrast plus richer color it provides, this Sony is sure to tickle AV enthusiasts’ retinas.
Sony says the Xperia XZ shares display technology with its Bravia TVs and calls it Triluminos Display for Mobile. With 138% sRGB coverage, it’s capable of reproducing the rich, saturated colors that are part of the HDR experience. This smartphone even includes adaptive contrast enhancement, tone mapping, upscaling, and noise reduction technologies—just like Sony’s HDR TVs.
Premium can stream HDR10 content and Sony has a partnership with Amazon to provide content.
The Xperia XZ Premium does not skimp on sound. It supports hi-res audio and high-bandwidth LDAC Bluetooth. Sony even promises the XZ Premium can render a three-dimensional surround sound field with its built-in speakers, but I’ll have to hear that to believe it.
A 3.5mm headphone jack includes AHO (Automatic Headphone Optimization) the analyzes headphone type and balances the frequency response. VPT (Virtual Phones Technology) emulate a 5.1 surround system through your headset.
Since it is Sony’s 2017 flagship, this phone is packed with many other exciting features. Perhaps the most notable is a 19-megapixel camera that offers 960 frame per second ultra-slow motion, low light sensitivity, and five-axis image stabilization.
With the Xperia XZ Premium, Sony joins LG and Samsung in making support for HDR on mobile devices a reality. While the full UHD resolution screen may be overkill for a screen this size, the added contrast and richer colors HDR constitute a sizable upgrade in picture quality. Sony has historically struggled to match the success of its smart phone competitors, hopefully this flagship device will bring the company recognition for its willingness to push the technological envelope.
