I am currently running my XG110 via a Radeon based HTPC using the Theatertek player. I am using the "scoped" overlay settings provided by Cliff Watson on the HTPC forum. When I try to set my brightness via the Avia disc the brightness is way too low. According to Avia my brightness should be about 55 but I need to bump it to about 70 or I lose alot of detail in the picture. I remember reading that a stand alone DVD player is set at 7.5IRE but that the ATI is set at 0IRE. Is this correct? If so, could this be causing my problem? Should I be using another test pattern in Avia?

I am posting here because I know alot of us are using a HTPC to drive our projectors.

Thanks.

Gary,

This is the only downfall with AVIA (if you can really call it a downfall). Black is 7.5IRE on the AVIA DVD. This is to spec and allows you to accurately setup DVD players that do not go below 7.5IRE.

VE (Video Essentials DVD) on the other hand does use the "blacker than black" 0IRE for it's PLUGE pattern.

Thanks for the info Darren. Any idea where I could download a PLUGE pattern for 0IRE? I hate to buy VE just for the one test pattern.

Thanks again.

Hey,

I think blacker than black or 0 IRE signals are part of the THX Optimode patterns.

You can find them on lots of DVD's that you may already have like Star Wars Episode One, Toy Story, Cast Away, Titan AE, From Hell, and a bunch of other ones too.

Good Luck,

I don't know where you could download that pattern. Perhaps DisplayMate may contain this pattern?

Brian may be correct with regards to THX Optimode.

Would DisplayMate be displaying the pattern in an overlay though?

That would make sense. When I set the brightness using the THX Optimode the setting is in the 70-80 range. When I asked this question on the Theatertek forum I was told that the THX test patterns were incorrect and to use Avia. If the THX patterns are designed for 0IRE the I will recalibrate with them. Thanks for all the info.
