Hello,

Buying a surround system to put in my gf's house. Budget is $1,200 for 5 speakers (I build my subs) and space is a concern so floor speakers are out. I currently have infinity IL10s next to the TV so there is certainly room for the bigger bookshelves. The couch we sit on is next to the wall so if we want rear channels we need something a bit smaller.

As of right now I was leaning towards 4 Paradigm Mini Monitors or 2 Mini monitors for the front and cinema 90 for the rears. I haven't had too much exposure to the other brands that are out there though... The local best buy has mirage. It's not the best listening room in the world as it doesn't even have a door but I'll try to make it work this weekend.

It's an open ranch style house with the kitchen, dining room, foyer and family room all kinda mushed together. The family/tv room is 15x13 and we sit about 10' from the TV. The TV is in the corner.

Thanks!

I have owned the Monitors and I like NHT and PSB better - Go to
www.onecall.com and look at the NHT Classic Two speakers for

the front and the Absolute Zero for side surrounds. Then for the

center the Classic Two center.

Go to www.crutchfield.com and look at the PSB Image speakers -

The Image B5 for fronts and the Image B4 for surrounds. Then look

at the Image center.

The two options that I would look at are Usher and Ascend. The Usher S-520 family are very good little front ported speakers as long as you respect their limitations - as small as they are you need to cross them over to the sub at 80hz to avoid bottoming and they are meant for small to medium sized rooms. It doesn't sound like either would be a problem for her room. What might be a problem depending on her receiver is the 4ohm center . The upside is they look and sound great and 2 pair and a center will fit your budget.

Another option I think worth a look is Ascend's CMT-340SE bookshelves and center up front and a pair of sealed HTM-200SE as surrounds. These are very good sounding and easy to drive but the 340s are rear ported and will need some room behind and around them.

Note I've owned both the S-520 and the CMT-340SE.
