I have a NEC 9 PG Xtra and needed a little guidance for using a semi-DIY screen.

I've decided on going with a 1.3 gain screen purchased from a manufacturer and mounting it onto a homebuilt frame (most likely aluminum/wood stretcher bars from Dick Blick). The question is - which manufacturer's screen to use?

Vutec's vinyl material is extremely thick (almost reminiscent of pool liners). Creases were extremely hard to pull out. I've decided against it. So that leaves me with two other options.

Draper's M1300 looks to be a perfect vinyl white material with a bit of stretch.

Da-Lite's Cinema Vision is also quite thin, but has an emuslion on the surface. It's a kind of speckled pearlescent treatment.

So for CRT uses, will the emuslion on the Da-Lite lead to more hotspotting? Is the standard 1.3 white matte of the M1300 a better option?

Thanks for your help -

As long as your not ceiling mounted try out the glass beaded from Da-Lite. I like mine allot.

Nice to roll it up when not in use.

As for cleaning... whos gonna touch it? So it should not get dirty.... if it does I just plan on using an air spray to get the dust off of it.

Do not waste your time with ANY glass beaded screens. There is much better materials out there.

As far as the 1.3 gain screens...you likely will not be able to tell a visable difference. So maybe you should just price shop. The emulsion from the cinema vision does add a viewing cone but may add slight sense of depth. I prefer the uncoated materials as it has other benefits.

All the screens you mentioned are made of the same PVC type material.

Thanks Tryg - not only for replying, but for carrying out the most comprehensive comparison of screen materials I've ever seen on this forum (and I've been trolling for about three years). It's an acheivement.

Your comments on untreated PVC struck home with me. Simple should be better - right? But then I got to thinking... veiwing angle for all the audience is less than 30 degrees - maybe that potential for greater sense of depth will make the image ever so more lifelike.

You mentioned the other benefits of untreated PVC. I assume that you're talking about accurate colors and linear gray scale reproduction. But won't those be the same with the Cinema Vision? Or am I just trying to talk myself out of the simplest (and best) option?

What I really want to know is who took the picture of you dressed as a nerd and how they did it without shaking the camera from laughing?

Thanks -

My girlfriend puts up with a lot of my wackyness. She wasn't laughing because whe was actually naked at the time. I'm not kidding.

When I talk about depth I'm saying MAY show more. I'm not certain as I don't have a full screen to evaluate. I would bet my bottom dollar nobody could tell the difference if double blind tested from normal viewing distances.

Simple better? only you can decide that. Some like nonsense and complexity in their lives.
