I just had my 6000u installed yesterday. I was worried about the 1031Q not being able to handle all 1080 lines but if it's not resolving all of them I can't tell it. The picture looks great! It's funny how you will what shows about bugs just because of how detailed the picture is.:D Now I just have to wait for my OTA module.

The 6000u is Dish Network's soon to be phased out HD receiver. The good thing about that model is the 15 pin RGB port. It's just a matter of building a 15 pin to 25 pin cable and you're off and running. You can also get an OTA module to tune in local HDTV signals.

Torque91,

Thanks for the reply. Since I posted, I did figure out this was an HD satellite receiver for DISH NETWORK.

Could you answer a couple questions:

1) Where did you purchase your 6000u? What's the lowest price you've seen, along with the adaptor to get off-air SD and HD signals?

2) Do you have anything hooked between the 1031Q and the 6000u? I mean is the scan rate safe for the 1031Q, or do you have other equipment interfaced, i.e,, are you running from the 6000u to an HTPC and then to the 1031Q or is it a direct connection.

Any technical details would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Yeah, if you can resolve all of those 1080 lines, while you will get a sharper image, you do get interlacing artifacts. So by that regard, the 5.5" phosphors that soften the 1080i is almost feature! :D

I qualified for a special deal on the 6000u since I am a current Dish customer. I am not sure where would be best for non Dish customers. You might keep an eye on ebay. Also, there is a lot of 6000u discussion over at the AVS HDTV hardware forum.

The 6000u plugs straight into the 1031Q.
This brochure has a rear view of the receiver. Notice the 15 pin RGB jack. It is a very simple setup. I think the new line of Dish HD receivers do not have the 15 pin connection.

The 6000u will work with the 500 system. For now (and at least the next 13 months), all new HD programming is on the 110 sat. They will be moving it when SuperDish comes out but you should get a free upgrade. Currently, HBO HD, Showtime HD, and the HD PPV is on the 61.5 sat.

Current customers qualify to get the receiver for $199.00 or for $149.00 if you are a preferred customer. Make sure you ask for he 8VSB module for OTA broadcasts. They throw it in but only if you ask.
You can find more info here. There are several topics on the 6000.

the 1031Q cannot fully resolve the 1920x1080i resolution but it certainly does look better than 720x480p DVD :) . I wish I could pause some OTA HD and grab some pictures to post for those with 1031Q's wondering if HD is worth it [ Trust me , It is !!! :) ] .

Yea I second that as well. I ran a SAMSUNG HD sat receiver and tuned in OTA local HD channels and it was KILLER on the 1031Q.

I just won a NEW Harmon Kardon AVR 230 (2004) and this receiver is more then I will ever need. I think my next purchase is going to be an HD satellite receiver and oval dish to replace my existing equipment and get on the HD waggon sooner then I ever thought now that I will be able to switch signals very easily.

And for those of you with little old ECP's you would also be pleased with HD. I have a 3100 and I am very please.

Here's the noob question: How many of you are showing 1080i native on your 1031q versus how many are downconverting to something like 540p? In either case, what are your refresh rates (I assume 50 - 60 Hz for 540p for PAL & NTSC) and P-strip settings?

It seems I won a 1031q from the Cincy auction, so I'm curious about what to expect with respect to HD...

jason, do you know if the radeon 7000 is capable of 1920x1080i? i thought i read that certain video cards would not display or accept that resolution...i know an upgrade is in order, but i don't want to do it to i can do a mike parker mod at same time..

p.s. do you feel that hi-def is worth it if i don't plan an upgrade to movie channels?we just don't see the need for them with so many dvds...and if i did upgrade to movie channels i assume they are in true 16x9 format and full 5.1, correct?

Brickie,

As far as I have seen SOME movies are in full HD but may vary a little with in the realm of 16:9. I mean some are 1.33:1 or 1.32:1 (anamorphic) but I have also seen some letterboking on the sides that is just slightly smaller then a full 16:9 screen. Not like watching 4:3 on a widescreen but enouugh to see that the image is shorter then the screen width.

As for audio most are in 5.1 Dolby Digital but not all of them. Of course I beleive this all depend sif your doing it by satellite or even your cable provider by area.

What refresh rate are you getting? (and can you share your powerstrip settings for it?)

Thanks!!

In 16x9 format with the 12xx projectors (I have a 1271), the can actually resolve a maximum of about 650 to 700 lines vertical by about 1000 to 1200 horizontal. The limitation on my 1271 is actually the Sony lenes since clearly higher resolution is resolved on the face of the CRTs than on the projected image even with very careful optical focusing. I also have a Sony G70 and there is a very noticable difference between it and 1271 when projecting 1080i with the G70 clearly having higher resolution.

Forget 1080i output from a htpc, difficult if not impossible with most cards and not even desireable for most purposes.. You can connect a hd stb directly with nothing but your 1031 vga cable.

also I bet there is no way in hell mp mod is really going to give any benfit on a 1031q other than subliminal. It is not clean enough or high res enough to matter and I am in no way saying the mp mod isn't good it's just beyond a 1031q. I know, many will likely disagree...but take it from a guy who has had maybe 20 pj's in the last year from 1031's to ecp's-1208's-pg's-marquee, ampro's to you name it. I have almost had them all except xg's and g90's.

Buy better lenses, hd144's if you want to get all that you can out of the 1031q but you will have to drive it a little harder.

Save your upgrading money for a better machine and those dollars will improve the pic far beyond any time or money modding or tweaking the 1031. I'm not knocking it, I started there too... Quite happily I might add, but if you are wanting more you have to move on to a better pj simple as that..
